Title: As the season rolls on...
Post by: AKBowman on November 23, 2009, 08:12:37 PM
I've been hunting the salt in Skagit...great times. Bought a boat and have a decent starter set up. I was wondering does the hunting keep getting better and better as the season rolls on or do the birds start moving to in land areas/fields later in the year when there is more water?

When is the peak of the migration in Western WA?

Field hunting usually picks up Dec & Jan, given rain.  It takes cold weather to start to push the birds down, but you should see fresh birds Dec. & Jan.  The recent storms have really kicked the migration into gear.  Then they head north again March/ April.

This is my first season waterfowling in WA State, so I don’t know anything.  What I have seen so far is early on there were more teal, gadwall, & widgeon around, they seem to be gone but now there are lots of mallards, more mallards than I’ve ever seen.  And there are more birds in and around the rivers and in the fields that are now flooding.  The Snoqualmie valley is filthy with mallards, mostly on private land.  The birds are also more educated but no surprise there.

The scotersa and oldsquaw show up more later out here in the San Juans.  Also, the only harlequin I've seen out here was in January.

This is only my second year duck hunting here in WA, but from last year it seems that late in December and January were the best times to be out.
