Title: Which .22 pistol for my wife to shoot?
Post by: Huntbear on November 28, 2009, 10:26:37 AM
My wife wants me to pick up a .22 pistol, so she can start shooting.  The ones I have experience with are the Ruger 22/45, and MkII, and the S&W 422.  All were accurate, and I loved em for plinking.  Any others, I am not thinking of that I can pick up fairly inexpensive, say no more than 2-3 bills used?  Accuracy, simple to use and accurate are my only criteria.

If she has small hands the Walther P22 is great. New they are about $350, and come in pink if that is what she likes. But otherwise the Rugers are great.

My thought, some kind of a revolver. easier to teach and safer/simpler than an auto.
just my experience. :twocents:
MOST women with an auto pistol scare me *censored*less!!
yeah, lets pick up the brass with a cocked , locked pistol....  don't ask!!!

Would have to agree with Jethro. If she does not have extensive firearms training go with a revolver.( This goes for men as well as women)  I have been a firearms Instructor for over 15 years and always suggest single shot rifle/ shotgun and/ or revolver for the first few years. I got my wife a .22 mag revolver. She likes it. When she demonstrates that she can safely handle a firearm will get her a semi-auto.

Cannot over emphasize firearms safety! :twocents:

Look at S&W, Taurus, Ruger

She will have fun
Good luck

I like any of the Ruger 22s either autos or revolvers. I currently have a MKIII Hunter, and I love it. The Single Six is another great gun.

I've had 3 Taurus revovlers, all centerfire, and I can honestly say that they wouldn't be my first choice. But none of them were bad guns, just a little rough.

My Father-in-Law has a Walther P22, and it's a really nice gun as well.

OK, if you want a revolver... Budget minded, the Taurus 941 is a great gun.

If the budget has room for an investment that you'll pass on to your kids, and they'll pass on to their kids.. Colt Diamondback in 22rimfire. You would never regret the amount paid for such a fine hand gun. The trigger can be as good as the Python trigger and they are amazingly accurate for a wheel gun.

:yeah:  I agree 100% with this.  I always prefer a revolver for a new pistol shooter.  They are reasonably priced and in my opinion safer for a new handgun shooter.  As someone else mentioned you may also look at a .38 special revolver.  Low recoil, accurate and the ammo is cheap.  I have been an instructor since 95 and if I have my choice when working with a new shooter I go with the revolver first, then go to a semi.

Buckmarks are a very nice shooting and accurate pistol, but I'd rather shoot a MKII from Ruger.  I own a couple and they feel great and shoot very accurate.  The single six in the revolver is also very accurate.  Stick with any of the above mentioned, and you will end up happy. :twocents:

Take her to a bigger gun shop or shooting range where SHE can decide what feels best to HER hand.  Then get THAT one for her.

This is what I did today. Went to a gunshow & talked to many people, handled many guns, went to a good shop & my wife chose a Walther P-22 'cause it fits her hand. I understand what's already been said about beginner's with Semi-autos & I somewhat agree but I let her choose what she liked & she is happy & will shoot it more 'cause of that. I will always be with her for a while.

Good choice!  Your right in what fit her hand and what she will shoot more.  With proper training a new shooter can be safe and learn with a semi.  Repitition is key and if you get more repitition with the semi then its the best choice.

I just picked up a new Ruger Mk. III Competition.  Nice looking and feels great in my hand.  When my wife saw it she said that it was beautiful but after picking it up and aiming it said that it was too heavy for her.

The MKIII Hunter. My wife loved mine. I gave mine to my best friend this last year. He always loved that pistol and would always come up with some excuse to be able to shoot it when ever we were out hunting. I know, I know, why would I "give" that pistol to my friend. Well, it's because he is my BEST friend (other than my wife and sons) and he has always been there for me and my family.
The good news is that my wife let the cat out of the bag the other day and I found out that I'm getting a BRAND SPANKING NEW MKIII Hunter for CHRISTmas!! I really think that she is getting it for me so she has one to shoot again!! Merry CHRISTmas guys!!!

The Hunter is nice and weighs a full 1/4 lb less than the Competition.  I think it looks nicer than the Competition too.  I wish the Competition had a fluted barrel instead of the slab sides.   I decided on the Competition because I like the extra heft, the thumb rest grip and I don't care for the HiViz fiber optic front sight.

Excellent!  It doesn't matter what us fellows like or what we think our better half SHOULD like, it's what feels best to them so that they will shoot it.  It doesn't matter if we like it if it just sits at home in the safe.
