Title: Late season Mulie success
Post by: rougheye on November 30, 2009, 08:52:47 AM
Well, we had a great hunt this year despite all the people and no weather . The bucks slill showed up , didnt see any real hogs but lots of nice deer . Our camp took two bucks including a huge 5 by 5 . I dont have any pics but it looks like lemondog already posted some . Its on here somewhere , i will get photos later . We rough scored him at 173 gross . Was shot on opening day .
I was on bucks every day and on Friday the 27th i got lucky . There were two bucks i was chasing on the mountain and on friday i watched both of them feed over a ridge and away from the other hunters in the area . It was the first time i had seen these bucks without the does . Knowing the area very well , i figured they just bedded right near the top so off i went . I crept ever so slowly down the ridge trying to see where they were bedded when i noticed the tall 4 point bedded on a rock outcropping . I was 120 yards with no good way to get closer so i waited and watched hoping he would come back over the ridge looking for does .

After waiting about an hour with no movement i realized that he probably would not come out where i was so i moved down the ridge to a closer position . That is when i noticed the wide 3 point on the same rock and a doe . Now i was 82 yards from both bruisers and they had no idea i was there . It also looked like they would come right by me in this new spot  . There was a little saddle right in front of me where they walked in at and if they came through i would have a 40 yard shot . About a half hour later the big four and the doe got up to start feeding . Its go time  :IBCOOL: they were coming toward me , now 60 yards , 55 , CRAP  :bash: they fed the wrong way and walked right by where i was before .  :bash: :bash: :bash: UNBELIEVABLE . O well the big three was still sleeping . I thought about going back to the other spot but i decided to hold tight knowing he would get up at any moment . Well , any moment turned into 2 hours . It was so cold , at one time i was shaking so bad from the cold but i was hell bent to out wait this buck .

Finally at 1 00 pm he got up . He was so stiff from sitting so long he could barely move . But after he was done stretching he started to make his way towards me and my shooting lane . As he walked through the shoot i was at full draw and i gave him a little grunt to stop him . He stopped perfectly broadside and i let one fly . I saw the arrow hit the sweet spot and stick in the dirt right behind him . What an awesome feeling to take a big mature buck after watching him and chasing him for several days . I watched him pile up and slide about 1500 feet down rock shale and a couple of small cliffs . I heard his horns clanking the whole way . I was looking for pieces of horn all the way to him but aside from being bruised up everything was in tact . He doesnt score well but to me he is a true trophy . He only had three teeth on the bottom and nothin on the top . I was by my self with no camera so my pics are from my cell , sorry for the crappy pics . He ended up taping out at 25 and a half wide . What a great hunt

I know , i thought he was more like 27 when i was chasin him . If he didnt hit those two trees i think he would still be goin down  :chuckle: Luckily there was a road at the bottom . You can see how steep it was on the second and third pic

Nicely done Rougheye....

I'm kinda kicking myself for shooting a little 3pt in the early season....man, do I miss the late archery hunt.

I can tell you, THAT won't happen again.

Sorry Gringo , phool and mossback . I dont have permission to post any more pics . I guess some people on this site and another one decided to start some *censored* about it being poached . Just a rumor but i heard it was being investigated . Since i actually saw it take its last breath i guess i find it a little irritating but whatever , investigate away . I do feel bad for the kid that shot him . Kinda bs if you ask me . I guess i wont be handing out beer in our camp anymore . It will be get the --- out of my camp.   :mgun:
