Sent you a PM. If you don't already have 1, you might want to go to Bobs in Longview and get a St. Helens tree farm map. Best $6 you can spend. :twocents:

just came home today from coweeman. do you have a cow tag or just a bull tag? we were lucky enough to have fresh snow on sat night. sun morning all the tracks in the snow were in the clearcuts on the headquarters side of the 4700 road. not very many people in there this year so that should help.

dawg, I know what you mean about the cold. Keep looking for the bulls. we saw 2 legal bulls that were still with cows so don't assume the herd you see is just cows. after hunting the coweeman on and off for 5 years, we have come to the conclusion, find a clearcut, new or old with heavy timber near it. the elk will feed in the cut at night and move thru the timber to the bedding area in the early morn. I say move thru the timber they really move. they are headed somewhere quite aways away and they do not stop. good luck and keep us posted.

I am getting laid off from my job on friday. I have been muzzy hunting the late season up in the randle gmu and the mossyrock gmu. I seen in the game regs tonight that the coweeman would still be open for a few days next week. I would love a chance to get out and do some more hunting.. My first ever muzzle loader season,, (elk). If any one could give me just any help to find the roads into the areas from south I 5 I would appreciate the help and could maybe someday pass along the favor for any road help up this way!!

take exit 49 go east. turn right on s silver lake road follow this road thru the houses. turn left at the stop sign. follow past more houses. this will bring you into weyco property. this is headquarters road 1600. to hunt the north side of the unit take rd 4700 off of 1600. hunt anywhere,it all looks elky. we did find most of the elk sign near the top of the hills. not much once you get lower.

If you want to go up the 1600 line, it's shorter to go South on I-5 two more exits, I think it's exit 46. That's the Headquarters Rd. exit. Follow it to the end, you are now on the 1600 line. A Weyco map is a good use of $6, and will help with the gmu boundaries too. The first right off the 4700 line that "kensmad" mentioned is the 200 line. Lots of elk up there. Look to the South facing hills. Saw about 60 head of cows and spikes the other day on my way up to hunt my favorite timber patch, which by the way is now a fresh clearcut. (I can't cuss loggers, as I spent 14 years wearing caulk boots). Saw three legal bulls on Wednesday, one dead, (lucky road hunters! it died in the ditch!!!) shifting wind busted me on the other two down in the timber. Saw one on Thursday, no shot, too far. They are there, ya just have to get out of your truck, (unless you are really lucky), do some walking and find them. Good luck! If you see a green Ford Excursion with a ski rack on top, flag me down and say howdy, I'll try to point you in the right direction. If you see it parked...well never mind. I'll be out there Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Just got back from coweeman, had a great time up there thanks to you guys who sent me a PM on where to go, saw a bunch of elk and even got within a 60 yards of a nice heard that had a spike in it..came away empty handed but its all about getting out and having fun. Actually a good thing i dident see a bull casue when i got home to fire my gun the cap would blow but with no ignition. im guessing the nipple was plugged...now how pissed would you be if u were within 100 yards of a bull and had amisfire!?!?!?!......for those of you who were down there did any of you notice a guy in a white pick up truck camped out on top of a big mountain over looking the valley??? the guy had a pretty sweet spot up there.

Any one have any luck down there this weekend??
we did find a fresh bedding area but tacked them into a hellish mess of thick jack firs that I could barely turn around in!!!
