Title: Late archery Cascade Blacktail
Post by: Elkstuffer on December 10, 2009, 10:55:30 AM
This buck finally came into my stand with1/2 hr of shooting light left on my last day to hunt. I had quite a few pictures of him on my trailcam but always in the dark. The full moon was a killer this year. I hit him aways back when he was quartering away but had full arrow penetration through the liver and one lung. I backed out of the area due to darkness and came back the next morning with my son Garric and friend Larry. We had an undescribable day tracking in the snow with the sun shinning down on us. My buck went about 400 yrds and probably expired before I got back to the truck that night. He is a 3x4 with eyeguards, 21" outside spread and good mass throughout. My best archery buck to date.

Sorry if I mislead SOME of you purists. I'm sure that the buck is a cross. Based on the tail, the color (double white throat patch) and the short ears MY guess is that he is more Blacktail than Mule deer.

The purpose of this post wasn't to mislead, but to show off a beautiful animal. If you are offended then kiss my _ _ _!

Great observation Buckmark! He took his boots off on the sled and I was in a hurry to get them back on his feet since it was 9 degrees. :chuckle:

It's a really nice deer, I think the point being made is that you were very specific and said Cascade blacktail. If it were a Cascade blacktail it would be a booner, so there is a big difference and the boundary for Cascade blacktails is pretty well defined.

The boundary for Cascade blacktail is the Pacific Crest trail. Have you heard of the word "migration"? Do you honestly think that the deer stop at the PCT and turn around and go the other way when the snow gets too deep?  I'll call him a Muley if that will make you happy.

well this will get thread jacked pretty quick, i agree but it is a important distinction to make between the two. i hunt pure blacktails and the big buck i shot this year is no comparison to a big buck like hoggsniper's but when measured against other blacktails he's a hog. it all really matters very little how one deer stacks up to another but theres a difference between the species.

Thanks for all the kind words. This was probably  one of my best hunting season ever taking a buck and a bull with my bow. Hopefully I can repeat next year and add a pronghorn to the mix. Thanks again.

good luck with the antelope ive been trying for 9 years and now that oregon is 140 bucks for a license i think they can have them. awesome buck and who cares if it is east of the crest trail. regardless it is a hell of an accomplishment you earned it. and the best part you shared it with your son. keep up the good work.

Great buck! I've seen the picture of the tail.  At least 80% BT, amazing for that far east.

Great buck Elkstuffer!!
You know, with some of the comments that are made by certain people on here Ric. You just have to consider the source.

Since the other debate post was locked and since you asked, for myself I would accept the opinion of an officail B&C scorer on the subject and I am not one. Again it is a great deer, muley or blacktail. Based on being harvested in Cowiche, my understanding of the boundary would label it a muley. The purpose of the boundaries is just that, to best define where the majority of that species resides, including migration routes, that is already taken into account of in surveys. Do I think they stray, sure, but I just don't see that as being meaningful to where the "official" boundary is, IMO -I've never seen a deer harvested in N. Bend, Gold Bar, Packwood, and other Western foothill areas called a muley :twocents:. For any who care, here is "official" definition from the State book.

Man this is really pretty ridiculous....Great buck and thanks for sharing!

Dman your other comments are completely ignorant and the other debate was locked because it was pointless.  Go do some bobcat Id or something benefitial to yourself and give it a break!

Thank you for the insight. Ric asked a question so I answered and if you care to read I congratulated him several times on his deer. Grow up just a little. >:(

I do see what you are saying Dman. Technically speaking the buck was shot on the east side out of the so called "cascade Blacktail" boundary so for the washington record books sake the buck couldnt be entered as a cascade blacktail. Now obviousely it is a bench buck or cross. Look at the tail and the ears. So for arguments sake, its 100% bench buck to me  ;) Great buck.
