Title: cva elkhorn
Post by: shorthair15 on December 12, 2009, 12:45:53 PM
i was at bobs last week and a guy said he returned two cva elkhorns in which the bolts cracked he said he was using jim shockey gold loose powder. i looked at the bolt and metal part was cracked he said he put 150 grains of loose powder in it. loose powder is rated with a higher velocity i think 150 grains of loose is to much. i think you can use 150 grains in pellets. but not loose powder. i dont have a manual for this gun but was looking at picking one of these up. this gun is probably not rated for more than 125 grains of loose powder but im just guessing as i have not read the manual and do not have this gun.

There's really no need for using more than 100 grains of powder, in any black powder gun.

I agree, you really do not gain significant velocity or energy. Find your sweet spot and it will do all the work for you.

Yah Ive always wondered at what measurement (110 150 etc) not all of the powder burns off and you are wasting excessive amounts? I guess it probably depends on the primer?

I run 150 in pellets in my CVA, it likes it. Shoots really well with behind the TC solid lead bullets.
