Well after one of my toughest years of hunting I finally got one!!!! He's not exactly a pope and young buck ( in fact he might score maybe 1 or 2 inches :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: ) but he's a trophy to me. His horn ( he only had one) was so small that I couldn't see it and I thought I had actully shot a doe!! There isnt too much of a story behind it. This last week I've been putting in a lot of time walking down old logging roads around the Humptulips area and havent really seen squat for deer. Ever since the accident my legs are nowhere near what they used to be so Im kinda stuck hunting easily walkable areas and the few deer that I have seen have been too far away in the woods for me get close to........until today. After a couple walkins this morning I decided to hit up some area around Humptulips that Ive never went into before. I drove probably 1 mile down a road and I glanced down a dug up road as I was driving by it there were 3 deer standing there. I hopped out of the rig and started walking down the road and the deer hopped in the bushes. When I got to the spot where the deer had hopped in there was 1 deer standing there about 10 yards staring at me. I drew back and stuck him with a frontal shot just a little right of center. He ran off and I called my dad to come help track him for me. He ran about 150 yards form where I had shot him.
I can't tell ya how happy I am!!! I was starting to think that I was gonna have eat tag soup this year. I gotta say thank you to everybody on this website who helped me out especially Killbilly and Billythekidrock for all the hard work they've done to make this a SUCCESSFUL season for me :IBCOOL: .

Hunters wait all year for the opening of the Vail tree farm to shoot bucks just like that. I know i have and a two buddys of mine took simular deer to yours this year. A few years ago a buddy had a "European Mount" done with his and it looks good on the wall above the fire place. He calls it his Unicorn

Congrats Jesse!
I am both happy and proud for you. I know it has been a hard year for you, your family and friends. But you are still out there doing the things you love. Not sure how many times we ran into you over the summer while fishing, picking shrooms or just taking pics with your dad.
I know that this is just the begining and there are probably a few more surgeries, but there are also more deer, elk, fish and other critters as well.
Again, congrats.
-
Seriously man, CONGRATULATIONS!
-
You betcha, my friend, getting a deer down with a bow is no easy task. And you have done it! Now excuse me while I go fill up my bowl with some "tag soup" from this years hunt.
-

Thanks BTKR! Its definetly been the toughest year of my life and I really appreciate everything thats been done for me through Hunting-Washington.
I actually had a surgery a little over a month ago to fix my knee and femur which went better than expected and there is only one surgery in the near future.

great job meat is meat
-
Jesse,
Congrats that is the best deer I have seen on this forum! You are an inspiration for everyone! THat will be some good vittles too!

The reality is that Jesse is and always been a hard huntin individual. He has had some excellent mentoring through his dad. Everything he does he does to the fullest from school to hunting or whatever he takes on. He built his own bow one year and took an elk with it the same year. We were there for him, all of us but Jesse and his family did all the work and felt all the pain. We have watched Jesse grow into as fine a man as there is. He set his mind to hunt this year and he has kept at it. I missed his call this evening because I was out of service range but now I know why he was calling. Congratulations Jesse, I'll be up for a steak & mushrooms this weekend.
And don't kid yourself, you did it and you would have done it without us anyway. What we did was all we could because we couldn't feel your pain or help you heal. I am proud of you my friend.
-
Congratulations, very happy to hear you were successful. Way to stick it out. Euro mount for sure, I wish I'd done that to my first BT spike instead of capping the skull.

Peanut!
Based on the fact that the horn is the size of a peanut. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

-
Way to go!!
-
Awesome congrats....I ran into Killbilly today and he said you had killed one..... had to come see ;)
-
You know, I did some thinking about this today.. The fact that you choose to stick with archery instead of taking "the easy" way of rifle hunting says a lot about your character and perseverance.
And to quote my father when I told him about your deer, "not bad for a guy who nearly died a year ago".
Again, great job.
-
Congratulations!!!

I can't tell you how many people kept telling me and pushing me to go rifle hunting this year, maybe dozens. The thing is I enjoy archery so much that it wouldn't be quite the same experience for me. One reason I've enjoyed archery is because of the sense of accomplishment you get when you go out in the woods and take down a big game animal with pure human strength. Thats one reason why I built my longbow a couple years ago. I had wanted to take down an elk with the most basic of weapons that I had cut down, shaped and tillered with my own hands. That sense of accomplishment is just barely 2nd compared to my deer yesterday. I have nothing bad to say about rifle hunters, in fact theres been times through the years when I wish I could have had a rifle to take down a big buck or big bull that was to far out of archery range, but to me its worth the extra effort to try and kill one with a stick and string.
-
This is the cow I got with my longbow back in 05. That is the actual camo I was wearing when i shot it. :chuckle:
-
size doesnt matter to me as long as im havein fun & enjoyin myself who cares

For those of you that don't remember, this was Jesse this Spring. Picture was taken at his sisters house in Burlington. Jesse is in the middle, Chris, Willie, Al, & and Adam surrounding.

At this time last year, Jesse was in the hospital hanging onto life. His progress and accomplishments are truly amazing and testimony that the Man upstairs looks after his children.
-
Awesome job Jesse!!!! After meeting you and seeing your determination, I knew you would do it. :archery_smiley: You to inspire us all!!!
P.S. I want a copy of that picture of all of us :chuckle: I don't have one.
-
Congrats, always remember that score or horn size don't make it a trophy. Sounds like you worked hard for him and it paid off, that is something to say in itself.
-
Great job Jesse, that'll be better eatting than my unfilled tag. I don't know your story, but I'm going to search the site for more info on you. Obviously there are a lot of people on this site that think a lot about you. That tells me something. Good luck on your next surgery, and your full recovery. You are an inspiration, even though I don't know you. Mark

Congrats on the buck this year Ouchfoss. You and I have never met, but reading your story and your posts in this thread are inspirational to say the least. Not only your can do attitude and success since the accident, but your apparent attitude before as well. The willingness to make and use your own bow to take an elk is impressive in its own right. We need more young men like you out in the woods.
Keep up the good work and my well wishes for you in your continued enjoyment of the outdoors. I would be proud to shake your hand and your welcome in my hunting camp anytime.

Personally, I dont care for heart, but my dad freaking loves it. For me part of the reason is the texture, taste and the mental part of it. I tried some of it this morning and it was VERY gamie tasting so it didnt really help my reasoning but my dad loved it and ate all of it.
Tonight I'm gonna make me my own deer dinner out of backstrap and canned up cauliflower mushroom.

move over ouchfoss that looks yummy

From the sound of it, I must be the only person who doesnt care for deer heart. I'm a big fan of jerky so I'm wondering if anyone has tried to make it into jerky and if it was any good. I would assume it would taste awesome but I've never tried it so thats just a guess.

Whoever was frying that heart up, thumbs up that was golden brown. Must have good hot horseradish with heart. Never heard of anyone making jerky out of heart! That would kinda be like making Jerky out of Backstrap in my opinion :o

Man, all I seen was my tag frying up in that pan :chuckle:, great job!

Well ouch nobody helped you with the cooking so I'll tell you the secret..... 8) You need to soak it in milk overnight to get the gamey taist out. Looks like your cooking skills are PPPuurrrrrfict and now I'm hungery too!
remember, it's just another muscle ...so don't over cook it. I add sage , garlic, salt and pepper. YUM

I cant take credit for cooking that heart, my dad actually cooked it. I never thought of soaking it in milk though, I will have to try that next year for sure.

that is a FINE critter there, kudos to you for perservering and a big THANK YOU to the helpers. That youngster will be tender and tasty!
Congratulations.

Congratulations Jesse! I won the taxidermy auction that was held to raise money for you a few months back. I came home empty handed this year, and a shoulder mount of my '09 deer tag just wouldn't look right. :P If you'd like to have this deer mounted by Michelle_Nelson, it's on me. Your deer is more of an accomplishment than anything I'll ever get. Besides, it took me 14 years of hunting to get my first deer, it could be a while before I get another one :chuckle:.
My parents were in a car wreck 3 years ago that left my mom a quadriplegic. I was there the first time she was able to wiggle her toes 1 year after the accident. That small simple act meant more to her than anything that I'll ever experience short of the birth of my 2 kids. I can only imagine that taking this deer such a short time after your accident is something that you'll never forget. I'd be honored if you'd allow me to help you remember this event.

WOW!! This is too cool. Thanks Michelle!! I really appreciate it!!! :IBCOOL: Everyone on HUNT-WA has been so good to me in the last year that I dont even know what to say. I appreciate the offer Andrew, but considering what you've done, as well as everyone else on here, you've earned the auction mount and I'd feel kinda bad to take it from you. I hope you get a dandy next season to use the mount for.

I love heart, deer, elk, bear, and have never soaked it in anything but Gastric juices after swallowing. In my opinion it would ruin the taste, at least for me. Everyone to their own.

I dont soak my heart in milk but roll it in milk then flour and fry.Like finger steaks its awesome.A little mayo sour cream and chipolte mixed together umm um
-
I soak it overnight in saltwater to remove excess blood which helps with the flavor in my opinion.
