Every year for the last 5 years the family has been going to the Columbia river for a few days for Sturgeon. I was looking for info if there is any rivers closer to Me that has a fairly decent run of sturgeon that could be fished for. I live in Seabeck, Wa. I have tried the union river in Belfair but it hasn't produced anything and they are the green ones in there. If any one can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it. I don't mind driving its just easier to fish closer to home right now. Thanks Robby

You could try the Chehalis, but if you are running down there you may as well go the rest of the way to the Columbia where there are a lot more fish :twocents: :dunno:

Do you want to catch fish or just go fishing? What time of year will also depend on good places to fish. hard to pass up the Big C for almost guaranteed fish.

I know nothing beats the Columbia. I am interested in something a little closer to Home. I have never fished Chehalis and know nothing about it. I was looking for something with in an hour drive apposed to 3 hrs. If there is some places to try on the Chehalis I would be willing to try that just need info where to start? Thanks Robby

There were a couple caught in the Green a couple years ago. I saw a couple in the back of some Natives trucks on the Puyallup last summer too, sturgeon were accidentally caught in their salmon nets.

Are you bank fishing or boat fishing, I used to fish the Chehalis below Montesano for sturg, get a river map and try any of the slew and river mouthsuse your depth finder and find the holes, river bends and boat ramp areas like Cosmopolis, It used to be a 24 hr a day fishery Check your rules and have fun

I have an idea. The next time you are going to go to the Columbia for a week try spending the first 1 or 2 days on the Chehalis river. I don't fish it for gators but know that the info given by MADMAX is a good starting point.
After fishing the Chehalis for a few days pack up and finish the week on the Columbia. After a few trips you will know if you want to continue to fish it.
It's better than spending an entire week at a new spot and not knowing it. Learn it a little at a time and it will be fun.

We fish down around the Astoria Bridge. Our family trips are around the end of May beginning of June. We go down there for 4 to 5 days. We have done pretty good over the last few years. Biggest One landed was 7'. Biggest keeper was a couple years ago tip of nose to tip of tail was 58" and weighed in at 54 lbs. Thanks everyone for the tips I might just check that chehalis out and see what happens. I do mostly boat fishing. Tried bank fishing a few times for em and haven't had any luck.

You could try the naselle too, plus its open year round, channel is alittle tricky though so go slow your first time around the horn and when you get in the river.

You can put in at montesano and run down or put in at cosmopolis and run up. There is good fishing later especially august and september and you can fish it at night. Make sure and have a break away anchor the river has lots of old deadheads on the bottom we fish mostly the outgoing tide. There is a real good convienience store that has bait and tackle and fish reports right on the freeway at montesano it;s about a half mile from the boat ramp.
