Title: A new hunting tactic
Post by: Blacklab on January 10, 2010, 04:20:28 PM
Did some rabbit hunting today with a few buddies what a blast. No weapons were used guns, bow, pellet rifles, sling shot nothin. All we had were big sticks and a beautiful red tail hawk. It was so cool beatin the bush with the sticks trying to kick the bunnies up. Seen 6 and Katana went after 2 but couldn't connect. Little to thick and not enough open area I guess but what a thrill.

Yes I've been interested in falconry for a few months now.  A local expert is going to show me his gear and birds next week.  Hopefully I'll get to go on a hunt with him.  Haven't decided if I have the time to take the plunge and get into it, it's a big commitment.

BTW Blacklab, I'm sure you know falconry is anything but new.  It may be the oldest hunting tactic out there!

I have a buddy that does that in Texas....
He's got a peregrine and a gyrfalcon.
We've gone after pheasants and quail before. It is very, very cool. Most impressive to watch.
Those birds are fast!

It is a huge commitment!

A buddies brother is the falconer. Said he's been doing it six years now. Also had another bird smaller a Mandarin (sp) but she staid grounded this time. The red tail hawk he captured and raised himself pretty cool. Might just have to go up north and watch him in his own sand box.

shaneman I did know about falcontry just never been around it or seen it till this weekend  ;)
