Title: Wood stock refinishing
Post by: washelkhntr on January 11, 2010, 01:54:25 PM
Well, I am going to re-finish a couple wood stocks. Still not sure which ones yet.... :dunno:. I have done a few before but it was years ago. My question to all you experts....after you stain the wood, what are you using for a final finish?

I used Tru Oil on my last one and really liked how it turned out.  That is probably what I will use on all of them in the future.   :twocents:

Tru-oil works pretty well,I have'nt used it on a rifle yet but I refinished the risers on a couple of recurve bows and it turned out great

are you doing a slurry type rub, or just rubbing the stuff on and letting it dry?  Makes a big difference in finish in my opinion.  Doing a slurry, you use 400 grit wet dry and Tru Oil.  Sand in small circles, until you get a nice dust/oil slurry mixture on the stock.  Continue until entire stock is done, then rub down and let dry over night.  The more coats you do, the deeper the finish.  I have seen rifle stocks done this way and it is like looking into a deep pool of water.

This is exactly how I did a stock of mine but I used 0000 steel wool.  It came out really nice...

 :yeah:

Tung or Linseed oil. Use nylon/lint free towel to buff with after the steel wool between every dry coat of oil.
