Title: small based die for reloading a bolt action
Post by: cwuwildcat on January 18, 2010, 11:14:37 AM
Anyone have experience with using a small based die for a bolt action?  I'm going to be loading for a bolt action 30.06, and picked up a set of RCBS dies for it.  As explained by the guy at Cabelas, the small based die set is for auto/semi auto feeding rifles, but will also work for bolt action, but RCBS website doesn't indicate what problems it might cause me.  It sizes the case from the shoulder to the head of the case a couple of thousandths smaller than a Full Length Sizer Die. In certain calibers it also sets the shoulder of the case back a thousandth or two more than the Full Length Sizer Die.

What ramifications/benefits might come from using this to load for a bolt action?

There would be no benefit to it, but I'm not really sure if there any real disadvantages to using that type of die either. Except that you'll be working the brass more and it may not last as long.

Agree with bobcat.  Minutely reduced case volume, so compressed loads may see just a bit higher CUP.  Watch closely for signs of pressure.

I dont think I would mess with it. Sell it and get a normal die. It will mess up you brass and when you go to resize you wont have much fun. About the only way you will be fine is if you can just resize the neck only.

Take em back and get a regular set, or better yet, a set of Redding 3 die set, with a necking die.

I used a s.b. die for my .223 Contender for a while until I traded it off. It worked fine and I had no real draw backs.

I'm going to take them back.  I don't have any plans on a semi-auto 30.06 in the near future, and would prefer sticking to the "recipe" when building up a load.  I think I just needed confirmation that there wasn't any benefits.
