Title: Current gun regulations. . .what are they/where can I find them???
Post by: atomicjoe23 on January 19, 2010, 10:38:11 PM
I've just started my first AR15 build and I thought it might be a good idea to double check the gun laws before I get too far into the build process. . .

. . .can anyone just give me a quick run down on what the current regulations are?

. . .and even better. . .anyone have a link or tell me where I can read the reg's for myself? Both federal and Washington State.

I am under the impression (especially since they are selling AR's with pistol grips, detachable magazines, and flash supressors in stores) that the '94 Federal Assault Weapons Ban is now defunct, but I'm sure that there are other things that I need to keep in mind.

Thanks!!!

You can build an AR in WA. Just no fully auto's here. The 94 ban is gone so you can have a detachable mag. pistol grips are fine and are pretty much standard on an AR. Flash suppressors are also ok, I have one on mine. You could even put a silencer on it to look cool (you just can't use it in our state).

Thanks guys. . .that's what I thought.

I just wanted to be double sure. . .

. . .Denali. . .as soon as we take delivery of our .357 I'm gonna get my concealed carry permit also. . .

. . .I would prefer a pistol, but a .357 revolver better fits our needs 75% of the time (hiking and hunting. . .instead of concealed carry) so it makes more sense to get a large caliber revolver before a pistol (can't wait to pick up a .40 S&W though. . .haven't decided on the model yet though. . .).

Thanks again!!!

Washington also has restrictions on SBR's (Short Barreled Rifles).  If your barrel is at least 16" long, no worry.

This is my wife holding my Noveske.

Looks like WA doesn't have any regulations restricting AR's, magazine capacity, pistol grips, flash supressor's, etc.

Thanks for the link. . .good info there.

Yep. . .knew about the 16" barrel length for rifles. . .my barrel will either be a 16.5" AR15 Performance in 6.8 or an 18" AR15 Performance in 6.8 so I'm safe there. . .

. . .nice pic. . .

Forget about building that AR for a few minutes, since they are attempting to outlaw it...

Guys, right now, today, your beloved legislature is attempting to outlaw this gun, these guns.

Have you read any of the threads about SB 6396?

Do not expect others to write your legislators and tell them to vote against the bill, this is your job.

You should take a few minutes to do it yourself, do not be asleep at the wheel regarding this or we will have tougher gun legilsation in this state than California does.

Go read the Assault Weapon Thread.

Go write your legislator.

Do it today, not tomorrow.

You owe it to all gun owners to get informed and to get involved.

Washington “Assault Weapon” Ban Impacts All Firearm Owners!

Stand-Up and Make Your Voices Heard Now!

Last week, NRA-ILA informed you about Senate Bill 6396, legislation that would bring California-style gun-control to the Northwest and ultimately ban many semi-automatic firearms commonly owned by Washingtonians.

In fact, SB 6396 is more far-reaching than it appears on the surface and will absolutely impact a gigantic swath of Washington firearm owners, including concealed pistol license holders, hunters and competitive pistol shooters. As examples, consider the following restrictions that flow from the provisions of this horrendous piece of gun control legislation:

Ø      Every semiautomatic AND PUMP-ACTION rifle and shotgun that has a detachable magazine and has a pistol grip located rear of the trigger (yes, that is just about all of them) is defined as an “assault weapon” and is banned under SB 6396!

Ø       If you and your child/children are out in the woods plinking with his or her Ruger 10-22 and there are more than 10 rounds in the magazine, you are a FELON!

Ø      If you are a Concealed Pistol License holder and your semi-auto self-defense pistol contains more than 10 rounds, you are a FELON!

Ø      The use of firearms defined as “assault weapons” (see first bullet point) are banned for use in hunting!

Ø      Competitive shooters will be impacted as any semi-auto pistol that has a detachable magazine and is equipped with a muzzle brake or compensator is defined as an “assault weapon!”

Ø      If you own a firearm(s) defined as an “assault weapon” on the date this bill becomes law, you can keep it if you are willing to allow your Sheriff to come into your home once every year to ensure you store your firearm(s) appropriately!

Senate Bill 6396 is proof that the gun-ban groups and politicians are not interested in only banning semi-automatic firearms that happen to look like military firearms. This bill shows where they really want to go with their agenda! This gun ban scheme will only punish law-abiding citizens and will do nothing to curb crime or keep criminals from obtaining firearms illegally.  This is not only another attack on our Second Amendment rights in Washington State, but an attack on your Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches of your home!

Please contact both of your State Representatives and your State Senator TODAY and urge them to oppose SB 6396!

That's right, and don't expect someone else to do it for you, we all need to keep writing our State Officials.

Back to the AR's for a moment, there is no magazine capacity limit while hunting with any firearm except upland birds and waterfowl in this state. However, there is no reason to go out deer or coyote hunting with an AR using a 30 round mag either, really looks bad. Looks is what the issue is with these idiots that keep writing these stupid bills and trying to get them passed. That is exactly why the AR is called the EBR, Evil Black Rifle, it's simply the look, we know better but they don't.

We as hunters should keep it (the Rambo look) low key so we don't lose ground to hunt. Most of my hunting AR's are camo painted and look much less intimidating to most people. I have actually had people inquire as to the rifle I am carrying while hunting, when I tell them it's an AR15 the responses have been, Wow, sure don't look like one. Seems the camo paint changes the visual threat level somewhat  :dunno:

Of course I suppose I'll get  >:( from some here for my comments, just my thoughts thoughts. YMMV 8)

"We as hunters should keep it (the Rambo look) low key so we don't lose ground to hunt."

I understand your sentiments.  On the other hand, we need to "mainstream" these rifles on target ranges and in hunting to combat the idea that they have no legiotimate sporting purpose and are just for killing people.

I just wrote all of my legislators. . .thanks for making sure that we all know about this. . .

I also wrote the 3 senators supporting the bill. . .

Adam Kline (D-37th District)

Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-36th District)

Darlen Fairley (D-32nd District)

I would encourage you to write them as well. . .

. . .I'm building my AR now while I can. . .getting my CCP now while I can, and we just got a revolver to go along with the CCP now while we can. . .I'm not going to let the threat of another anti-gun law convince me not to buy a gun because it might become illegal. . .they can come and take my guns over my dead body (I know that sounds exactly what we shouldn't sound like, but I feel very strongly about this. . .I didn't spend 10 years of my life fighting for American freedoms to have the rug pulled out from under me now that I can actually enjoy the freedoms I fought to protect!!!)!

Sorry for the rant. . .

Here are the senators who not proposed this bill. . .be sure not to vote for them in their upcoming re-election(s).  According to other representatives they introduced this bill primarily as a way to gain support for their re-election campaigns.

 Senators Kline (D-District 37) , Fairley (D-District 32), Kohl-Welles (D-District 36), and McDermott (not sure on this one. . .)
