"Keepers of the land" my ass! :bash:

People better get the message now. We need to stop killing wild steelhead on all waters in Wa. This is just one more reason. We need to put every wild fish on the gravel that we can or our kids won't be fishing for them.
If we stop it will help put more presure on the tribes to rethink their ways.

great law...i'm all for it.
fishcrazy is 1million% correct.

"rethink there ways" that would mean they had to think there ways in the first place. the state needs to rethink there *censored*. as far as im concerned we are all american and as such should abide by the same laws

Kind of confused here??? stop killing them, I agree with 100%. Then you say we need to put every fish we catch on the gravel that we can??? If they are on the gravel don't that mean we killed them??? Like said I agree 100% to stop killing the natives.
-
Putting them on the gravel is meant to say let them spawn and not put them in the cooler. Every fish that gets past the nets should be allowed to spawn.
Yes we should all be under the same rules. But reality is that they have their own laws. I like what the Colville tribe has been doing with nets. They have been doing allot of testing on beach seines. They have found the mortality rate has gone to nearly 0 on wild fish released. Why can't the coastal tribes buy into this. They could harvest more hatchery fish and get the wild ones back on the spawing beds. Something to think about is what will happen when the feds step in and shut the tribe down. How much $$$ will they give the tribes? If they stop on their own they get no $$$$
I agree WDFW is not doing what they can. Look at the history on nisqually steelhead runs. It was the last river in WA to have a 3 fish limit on wild fish. Now you can't fish them at all. The rest of the state is going to follow one system at a time.
On our side of the fence I think people need to realize having a good time is not measured on fish in the box at the end of the day. So many people can't put a wild fish back because they feel they have to take something home or it was a wasted trip.
Another thought that popped into my head where is CCA when it comes to the tribes?

Bingo!
Hey jackelope, do you do any river fishing in February, March or April?
[/quote]
sure do...why? i haven't kept a fish i caught in years unless i was in the salt. that includes salmon, trout, steelhead, bluegills, sturgeon, bass, whatever other species you can come up with.
-
p.s. i wish all of washington was catch and release for native steelhead everywhere all of the time.
-
don't they get closed every year anyway? is this really anything new? maybe it's new for the skagit/sauk system i guess.
even with catch and release too many fish die...even the best at handlign fish will kill fish. the simple fact is that too many dudes need to have their trophy pose with their fingers in the gills and the fish out of the water too long and the list goes on and on...

Exactly!!! We have another case of the few that ruined it forthe rest.
Leaving a river open to not put pressure on the rest? I'm not sure I understand. These fish are in serious trouble so lets keep the pressure on them?
Or shut it down and give them a break and while we are at it lets shut down the catch and kill season on everything.
I don't think any rivers made escapement last year and probably won't this year. A sobering thought to those who think they are going to continue to fish for and kill the wild steelhead.
I'm hoping to get out this weekend for some wild fish. but I know one thing they will all be alive and well at the end of the day. I might have a few dead ones that are short one fin. :chuckle:

It doesnt matter if we fish or not as long as the tribes have nets in any system that system will fail. i started to CnR back in the 80s, and sorry i ever did. The DFW cannt stop the tribes and they dont truely give a damn! Its so sad :'(

I won't be caught up in the race to kill the last wild steelhead. I hope I can see my grandkids land one and can't justify killing them myself. Especially when they have already made it past the nets.
If we stop it's our only chance to get the tribes to atleast cut back on wild harvest and possibly use more wild fish friendly means of harvest.
Youre statement about tribel nets in a system is 100% correct.

so you have changed your mind now and want to be part of the problem? good logic.

No i wont kill a nat, i wish we could close the rivers down to everyone ten yrs or so and let the fish come back i would put my rod down for that, how bout you? I know we both want a fix for the problem, but until we manage the fish for the fish instead of take or fishing it doesnt look good my friends. We are all part of the probem!

If that is what it would take for my grandkids to catch one YES.
I don't think it would take 10 years or an all out closer but I get yer point and agree with the line of thought. If we are to tell any user groop they must stop fishing we our self must be willing to as well.

I don't fish these river's but just a couple observations:
Is there still going to be a Skagit tribal gill-net fishery this year?
Tribal "co-managers", under treaty enforcement actions by the State are compelled to cease such activities when lower than necessary returns are forecasted, this is up to the DFW to take to a higher power if necessary to preserve the runs.
Given the best data available on C&R mortality, vs. lethal gillnetting, this just does not make sense from any management perspective unless the gillnetting also ceases at least temporarily.
-
They closed the Skagit back in 2001 and the tribes still netted. It hasn't been reaching escapement since
then and only gets worse. They have decreased the escapment so far now that it may never come back.
Something has to be done and it looks like this is the first step, if the legislators see the sportees doing theyre part they may decide the tribes should do theirs too. I have made alot of great memories on the S/S system and will miss it greatly but I would also like my kids and grandkids to make some memories too.
-
Yes indeed something needs to be done before its too late. Time for the tribes to step up and do their part. Seen way too many fish wasted sitting in the trunks of their cars and rotting.
-
Ironhead and fishcrazey I say fish on until the brink or don't even buy a license. I quit fishing several years ago... love to do it just got tired of all the state monkey business... I believe the only way to bring the fisheries around is to make it collapse either financially or ### That is the only way to bring ALL parties onto one page... That also assumes that the WDFW won't play favorites. :twocents:
