Title: OAK CREEK UPDATE
Post by: boneaddict on January 25, 2008, 03:05:14 PM
I finally made it out there to snap acouple shots for you guys that can't make it over to see it for yourself.  Lots of animals there.  I didn't make it in to the shop to get this years statistics like I do every year, I just didn't have the gumption with all of the folks.  At least this time I didn't have to fight a bunch of renegades.  First time this year I really got to take a gander at what was there....

Saw two bulls that have shed antlers, one each.  Both raghorns....one injured and not healthy which usally results in an early shedder

I am having trouble with uplooading again and working with a new program, so bare with me.

Here's one of the biggest that I could find.  Only one that was a super nice bull, no super monsters.

The bull with the kicker has sweet fronts, but the big 6 sure has some amazing backs.

Sure  is a lot of good looking bone there. I wonder how many of those sheds will be stock piled back up in the sage hills for when they open it up in May. I saw a few guys with packs full of bone coming back to the parking lot at about 4am last year. Hope they catch more of them this year.

Bones,
Do they still feed up above Wenas Lake and Hwy 12? If so which station were those pictures taken at? I used to live about a mile below the lake back in the 80's.

Thats the mainfeeding station just up Hwy12 at Oak Creek.  They started feeding the ones at the junction away from teh road a bit.  Away from the people.  not sre what their thoughts are on that.  Then there is the oneup the Wenas, but you have to have a good spotter to really see them.  There is also another up Cowiche I guess.  They are starting to feed them further and further away from the folks except at the main office.  May have something to do with the Indian pressure, or just don't want the elk to get used to the people. IDK.  These were at the main one at Oak Creek.

The thirds on that bull are sure awesome.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fbe.jpg&hash=10f1df12081c0da9c79af658ec03c710df9e5764)

Wow...some nice bulls in there this year! That big dog is a........??370 bull?? Is he that big? That big 6 is also a 360+ bull...

Am I too high?

Nope, you are right on.  18+18+22+22+10 = 90x2 =180 plus 45 width (modest)+90 mains=315+48 of mass(modest)= 363 +12 inch extra equals 375.  All conservative estimates in my book yet still a gorgeous score.

Those are a couple great bulls in there, nice to see they made it through the season and have survived poachers.

Yep, not a real good photoshoot type of situation, but a good place to drool, and the kids love it.  Thanks for adding the pics.  When were you over?  I remember you saying something about coming over when I was venting about the Injuns trying to kill that bull.

I was over there about 4 weeks ago or so.  I tried to get good pictures there ten years ago and nothing turned out.  I just took a few to document them this time and didn't even try for quality.

He's been around a couple years.  So has that big collared six.  I should dig up some old pics of them.  Don't know where they hide during the season.  I guess If I did, he'd be barbecued tonight.

Bowpredator's reply made me wonder why some people go to the length they do for antlers.  Money, prices for antler are the lowest they have been in quite some years, can't be the reason.  Is it just my pile is bigger than yours?

In response to the shed thing, its ubeliveable what it looks like over there 5/1
I think lots of guys sneak in and do the stash and mark with GPS thing
I know when it was not as popular we used to do pretty good, but not anymore

It is addicting, I am going to try moose up above Spokane one of these days and a trip to the Blues for elk sheds maybe this year

No kidding, I absolutely love the thrill of seeing just a speck of antler, and then climbing up or down to pull this special gift out of a tuft of grass or bush. (This is the only bone I like to remove from a bush...  :chuckle:) The anticipation is incredible. The wonder, how many miles has this travelled? What type of year did this deer experience? Was it chased by a cougar, battle with other deer, how did it survive the hunt, where was it hiding? ....very cool emotions and thoughts as you shed hunt. Good exercise too, and god knows I need the exercise. Just wish gas prices would fall soon.

I meant 'why break the law and pick up and stash sheds in the Oak Creek Wildlife Recreation Area for no real profit'  I understand the shed hunting pasttime reasons.
