I bought some green rouge jewelers polish to polish my barrel and wanted to know if anyone else has ever done this and what the results were. I seen a post on here that talked about it but I cannot find it again.
I figured I would just coat a cotton patch and push it thru from the bolt side down. Replace and repeat about 20 times. Then clean and oil.
I believe this will smooth out my barrel and be more accurate and ease cleaning.
Any thoughts?

And ... while we're on the subject, has anyone use Tampax tampons to clean their shotgun barrels?

Where you getting ones with a string long enough to do that? :yike: :chuckle:

That is helpful, thanks guys. I have heard it is just like the other polishing compounds sold for this but much more cost effective.
Comments like those is why people are starting to get sick of this site.

Thx for the post. Been meaning to ask something similar. There was a post here with a link to a product for polishing scratches out of glasses-binos etc.
Anyone remember it?

Sorry.

Hmmmm that's actually not a bad idea... pretty much a disposable bore snake.

I wouldnt run a metal polish down my rifles barrel. :twocents:
-
Why would you not run a metal polish down your barrel? Isn't that the samw a lapping a barrel? I know that they hand lap the better barrels out there but not the mass produced stuff. I would not lap a barrel because it is already at the correct diameter. With a polish I am thinking you can smoth out the burrs and rough spots without adding diameter to the bore. Am I way off here. By no means am I a gunsmith. That is why I posted the question here before I go and ruin a rifle.
-
Im not trained how to do it correctly Im worried that I would damage somthing...I could be totally wrong might be fine...I'm just paranoid about stuff like that.
-
Me too! That is exactly why I posted the question. Someone on here must have some knowledge of this.
-
You might see if a gunsmith would do it or tell you how to do it correctly..
-
I don't see the need to do that.
On my custom rifle, it took 17 rounds till i had no fouling. In that period the bullets were removing the imperfections of the barrel. After that the barrel would clean in a wet patch, brush then another wet patch.
Your loads have a lot to do with accuracy & your choice of powder, some powders are very dirty like w760(nasty)
After my barrel brake in and some load testing this is what i ended up with in under 50 rounds.

I have not heard of this before Galpster, so can't give you any suggestions on it and I may be off base but here is my take on it.
Fire lapping or using one of the treated bullets such as final finish helps smooth out the imperfections and ruff spots where they come in contact with the bullet. Running a patch through the barrel with a polishing compound will polish the barrel I guess, but would not do the smoothing where it needs to be in reference to the bullets path out of the barrel.
Pushing a patch will do nothing about taking out the inperfections in the barrel, and in my opinion could cause more problems than good, depending on how much pressure in which direction in the barrel the patch goes through. Over polishing with a patch and rod could in my opinion cause more harm than good in the accuracy of the barrel. In closing hand lapping should not be a diy thing you do at home, from what I understand it is a practiced skill, using mic gauged plugs for barrel diameter etc.
Here is a decent article on the final finish product. I don't use it myself and go through a 50 round lapfire program myself. However I have heard good things about the final finish product.

Do they make them big enough for a 12 ga? lol

I use the green bars for polishing my boat. I missed the purpose for doing this on rifle barrels. :dunno:
