Title: Gun trade in at cabela's?
Post by: WildfireArcher on February 14, 2010, 08:25:47 PM
does cabelas take gun trade ins?  I want to trade in my NEF 7mm-08 handi rifle towards a new .223 or 22-250. Do they do that?

I'm not positve, but I would bet that they do based on the number of used guns they have for sale there.

Also, I bet you'd be better of selling your rifle and then just go in and buy the new one you want.   :twocents:

Most likely what they will do is buy your rifle at a fixed rate below book value. I can't remember the rate, but a call to cabelas will give you that rate. Then you would just take the cash or posssibly store credit and use it towards the purchase of your new rifle.

They do take trades, like others have said, at a rate low enough that they can make money on it when they resell it.  The positive is that if you put that money towards another gun with them, you do not pay tax on the amount they gave you for your gun, only on the difference between the two guns.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that you never get what it's worth(gun dealers,car,etc...)  Think that's why they call them dealers.  Sell it, good luck

Not getting what its worth is to be expected, getting ass raped is something else

I can tell you exactly how they do it.  Did it once and didn't get hosed too bad.  First they appraise the gun then determine what the price they expect to put on it when they put it on the rack and offer 2/3 of that price as either trade in or cash out amount.  They had something I really wanted so getting rid of some inventory for a loss wasn't a concern to me.  I wouldn't have done it as a sale though, only as trade in.  A gun they would sell for $1000.00 you will only get $666.66.

wholesale/retail...

sounds straight forward enough to me. they're in business to make money, just like car dealers.
 :dunno:

I've worked a couple of different gunshops over the years and I've bought and sold a couple of guns. There is a huge difference between retail/wholesale and some of the offers I have seen in there.
I would never pull some of the low-ball offers I have seen at Cabelas, thats a guarantee to piss a customer off who will probably never come back.
Think about it for one second.. I took a Browning rifle in there that they had on the rack for $1900, I know the wholesale is $1450, the gun has 20 rounds thru it and is near mint and they offer $350.
I personally would be embarrased to make an offer like that.

You have to remember thay do not need your gun they all ready have there own. So by buying the gun from you is doing you a favor, not them. They are going to pay a little as they can for a gun and sell it for as much as they can. They are in the business to make a profit.

If you do not like the offer they give you then sell it as a private party sale. It does not matter how many rounds are through the gun. It is used, period.

I agree with you guys, thats the american way. Buy low and sell high. Heres the deal though, ever heard of repeat customers? If a guy leaves with a bad taste, he won't come back. A one time profit is no way to run a business.

I bet most trades they work, where someone sells one gun at a reduced price, to then turn around an purchase another ends with happy folks on both ends.

I would not do it....I would plan a bit better and sell for a better price.
