We all started somewhere. Don't be shy...................
My first deer mount. I got a free cape from a sage buck and put it with a set of mountain bones. It was my first deer project. I did it with one little hundred watt bulb in my basement, with no tools or gear.

Looks pretty good to me. Was it a tough project!!! Did u have fun doing it?
-
It was kinda tough. I had zero direction. I did a self tan, had no idea about thinning lips or whatever. I had no idea about how to deal with the cartilledge in thw ears..... Lots of things I've done wrong but It was FUN!

I wouldn't even try, nicely done.
:yeah:
-
Thanks! Overall, probably a couple weeks. One long day for most of it.
-
OK Doug, we now know that Michelle isnt really going to post her first deer mount but here is mine. This was a self tanned blacktail that I killed and mounted , first mount I did. ............oh man, I cant beleive Im doing this :chuckle:
-
Bone/Buck lucky That's really not that bad for a first crack at it..Ive seen lots of professional work thats not even that good and thats not even counting the whole screws in the ears thing... :chuckle:
-
:chuckle:
OK Mich, lets see you 1st mount. And no cheating, dont be posting up a fresh one :chuckle:
-
Crap Charlie, thats probably better than my last mount. LOL
-
:chuckle:
-
Ok I paid good money 20 some odd years ago and what I got looks like dog puckie compared to those, nice work guys. Mark
-
Crap Charlie, thats probably better than my last mount. LOL
Hes definatey a top notch taxidermist.
-
Oh by the way I did that mount back in 1997 or 1998 if I remember right. Now that I think of it , it may have been 1999......hmm.
-
I don't have a camera right now so I had to take it with my cell phone. I figgure it is a really crappy mount and really crappy picture isn't going to hurt things. :chuckle:
You guys are lucky you didn't use an really early season cape for your first mount. You guys have 10X as much hair on your to cover stuff up. :tung:

Nice of ya to take a crappy blurry picture Mich :chuckle: Looks like a good mount for your first.
Now wheres Joe at, post a picture of your first man!
-
Mine was 1994 I believe. So that mount has survived about 16 years. (holy crap time flies) I'll round up my first bird here shortly.
-
Very fun and interesting thread. All of you not only semm to be good people but talented as well. Before I get to old, which isn't to far away ;) ;) I want to see each of your artisic work in person, I've always liked visiting taxidermy studio's, they're just awesome. :)
-
Here's my first deer and first turkey. Mounted them both in 1997. Wow how time flys when you're busier than hell. :chuckle:
-
Fun to see the pics guys, Charlie, I think you have a natural talent for this stuff.
-
Ok, here is my very first mount that I did.
-
Here is my first animal that I did....
-
Nice first critters Taxi's! Go's to show how much natural tallent there is here. All of oour first mounts are way better than the dude that screws his ears to the antlers LMAO!!
-
Hey bone, what does the rest of the sign say that is in your picture? Nice firsts everyone. I'm trying to find a picture of my first. Will post it as soon as I find it. How embarrassing it will be. Great thread. John
-
OK, here's my first. Truly a basement job. Used an old taxidermy book. I ordered the form too large, and the lips kept tearing on me, but I wouldn't give up on that damn cape... :bash:
-
Nice looking first mounts guys!
-
Nice looking first mounts guys!
You must have posted this before you looked at mine.. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
This was my first mount I did about 8 years ago. I never finished it because my mothers dog chewed on the ears on the deers left side. I wasnt sure how really how to do one but I tried. the mouth I really messed up on. hahahaha :P :chuckle:
-
nice first mounts, almost makes me want to do a first mount
-
Great idea!!! I'm laughing my ars off at some of them. Atleast you guys had the guts to try a first. Maybe someday with a littel help I could try it.
Kris
-
Greg, That one looks better than the one that you paid for on the other thread with his ears screwed to the antlers. :chuckle:
-
I used Dry Preserve on that cape. That is a big thing in the south. Bondo ears. I can't remember when I mounted that deer. I bet it was in 2002.
-
Pathfinder101, You should stick some saber fangs on yours, he has quite a grin goin on there, Better looking then mine though Nice Job !!!
BLKBEARKLR, I see your first was a fish, just curious what you charge to do other fish ?? Also do you repair 50+yo Musky mounts (broken fins, cracks, paint, etc...) ?? :chuckle:
I haven't been brave enough to tackle a mount yet, I guess you have to have talent first !! :chuckle:

Robo - on fish I charge 15.00 an inch skin mount and 21.00 on replicas. In your case it is a repair job so that would be different price
On your fish mount repair, there are a lot of new things out there now versus 50 years ago, the fins would not be an issue, would remove them and replace them with artificial fins. They have quite a few out now that are transparent and actually look good instead of the old plastic types. The cracks as long as they are not wide and curled up they can be repaired. And a fresh coat of paint would do it wonders. Depending on how they mounted it may be able to replace the eyes on it. The eyes of today and from 50 years ago it is like night and day. Would love to see it anyways even if you do not want to get it repaired, I love seeing old style...
Joe

Robo, that is an easy fix on that crack, it looks like it stopped right at the gill girdle plate so would not be that bad, could come in and clean the mouth up a little and some fresh paint on that would look pretty sweet, the fins might have to be replaced but that is a small project. It is always nice to see old style, that is an awesome mount now and then, congrats on that one..

Nice lookin first mounts guys (and gal) ;) Heres a question for ya...if someone were to want to try this whole taxidermy thing out, get some books and videos and such, what would be a good first animal to try??
-
I started out with a deer. I hear a lot of people start out with birds though.

Grouse and pheasants are pretty easy firsts.
-
First mounts would be anything you can get and mount up ;) Try it all! Mine was a deer also.
-
I still have my first grouse. It's not pretty :yike: Was never pretty to begin with, and it's been through 20 years of military PCS moves. I'll snap a pic when I get off work and post it.
-
I did a grouse, turkey and deer, basically all at the same time.
-
Hey Bone, I gotta know, what does the rest of the sign in your first picture you posted say. The suspense is killing me! ;) John

-
John let your hair grow out for another month. Than ship it over here and I can use it to practice hair transplant on Joe.
I figgure by the time I get done I will be an expert. :chuckle:
-
I think you ought to transplant feathers in Joes head instead of hair. Maybe the merganser look LMAO!
-
Now Charlie, your on to something there. I wish I had photo shop and a picture of Joe, we can experiment on the look before hand. OH, I do have a picture of Joe.:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
If you ask you will receive, don't you just love the flattop? How about the tan? That was after 6 weeks straight on the gulkana glacier training soldiers....
Bet you did not know I am glacier certified as an instructor.....

Joe that picture is like 20 years old. That doesn't count. I could post that pic I have of you grinding down that artificial skull plate in my shop. The one where you are covered in that plastic show crap.
