Cool and congrats!
I took a kid and his dad out in the south sound today.  We got one ling (about 6-7 lbs) and a few rockies.  We finished the day out with several silvers (20-24") and a few really nice cutts.  It was pretty good fishing until the wind picked up.  The kid was really dissapointed that we had to throw back the cutts, especially one that was pushing 3 1/2 lbs.  Lots of fun though!

Man those are some ugly looking fish. :o

Always a good day when you on the water or in the woods.   Even if you don't get anything.

I hate when they are that close to the limit and have to toss them.  Mine was just barely over.  We went out of Possession.  Hopefully heading back out in a few days.

This one came off the pier while we put our boat on the trailor.  Wasnt expecting a 29 incher from the pier.

Those look to be about 8-10 lbs each? I fish the jetty at Westport and that is what the 30 inchers weigh.

I use to love to fish off of the jetty at Westport!  We would catch a greenling, hook it about 4 feet under a surf bobber and let him do the work.  I caught a 22 lb ling out past the green bouy and had one hell of a time getting it in across the rocks.  I almost lost my Dad to those rocks hiking out one wet morning.  I havent done that in probably 10-12 years.  Is it still worth fishing?

Polar bear - NO! Not worth it.....don't do it. LOL

It can be fun. Lot's of little ones and every once in a while someone will land one around 20 lbs. They added more rock to the jetty a few years ago, but now it is a slimy mess. Very hard to walk on.

I have also landed alot of lings off that jetty.  I am headin back out to possesion in the morning so hopefully i will have another one to post.

Dont worry, my rock hopping days ate the jetty are over since my back surgery.  Im not about to get a couple miles out and discover that I am "camping out" for a while.  It use to be a blast out there.  We would pack as much beer out as we could carry, fish until it was time to head to the races in Elma, turn around after the races, head back to the jetty and do it all over again the next day.  Ah, the good old days!   I'm going to try and get some South Sound lings this weekend.  I hope that I can do better than how I did last weekend.

I haven't gone much in the last couple years (been spring bear hunting and of course price of gas) but we used to do pretty good. I think the largest I got was 32 inches and about 15 lbs. though I lost a few bigger. Here are a couple pics.

My step son and our gear.

A couple around 27-28 inches.

It doesn't get much better than that as far as eating goes, at least from our waters around here...beer battered and fried...fish and chips

How are the worms in those things? I heard they can be pretty bad. That's one reason I've never had much interest in catching them.

Its our first swap fish hunt in the makings.  Redsides/cutts cooked streamside in butter while they are flopping in the pan and curling up, versus ling or whatever them ugly things are cooked in beer batter.  :)

I might say this and duck, but i pretty much catch and release wild trout, and the planters i catch i don't want to eat...but us wetsiders with boats would be glad to take you eastsiders out for some lings if you want to. it closes in a couple weeks as far as i know and the carburetor for my boat is sitting in a million pieces in my shop right now :(
don't get me wrong, lings and salmon go directly to the bbq or the freezer, but the trout go back in the river.

bob...i've only caught a few and haven't had any worm issues with them. maybe polarbear or dman could enlighten us some more on that.

No need to duck, I am almost 100% catch and release.  I say  almost because on the rare occasion when I am biviwacked out there, a couple hit the skillet.  There is nothing like 100 fish days on an Orvis 1 weight.  100 fish days are like 400 pound bears in Washington...not likely....usually is more bragging than happening...but sometimes a real occurance and when it happens its unreal!!!

Any of the bottom feeders can be wormy, though I've not seen much in the ling's we've caught. Just cook 'em real good.
Title: Re: Finally got out

I have found that the true cod tend to have more worms than any of them. I havent seen many in lings, not sure why.

I've seen that too, also in Pollack. I think that Trues are a little more mud-bottom oriented than Lings, the worm is a form of Nematode, generally found in the mud. You do need to cook them out good, I read of a Korean man who ate raw fish that had a live one in him that caused a ton of pain...

I have seen worms in seabass but not in anyother bottom fish yet.
We fished a new area today and it started great.  First drop i hooked up a 26 incher and had my buddy take some pics (which he did video instead of snap shot).  Released keeper thinking i would catch a bigger one.  Caught one more ling and it was undersized.  Got pic though.  My buddy hooked up 1 ling.  After that it was a rockfish derby.  Boated alot of rockfish but no monsters.  Did hook up a couple decent rockfish.  Had two break offs.  Both were probally lings.

The only way I've fished for Ling is at night through the ice jiggin', and set lines.  WA state record came out of Palmer Lake, Okanogan Co.
