Title: Tradition Lightning muzzy questions????
Post by: GoldTip on February 24, 2010, 09:56:07 AM: I have an opportunity to pick one up at a reasonable price and am wondering if anyone here knows if this model is "Washington legal" muzzleloader? Have thought about trying Muzzy hunting and thought this may be a good opportunity to pick up a decent muzzy, but don't want to pick up something I can't even use here. Thanks for your replies.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on February 24, 2010, 10:17:32 AM: i took a little look around i know most muzzleloaders but not this one. i did find a link for a converstion kit to make it a 209 which is not legal here so that would sugest that it uses #11 or muskets caps which are legal. so just remember has to be open breech and use caps that fit on the nipple. not 209 primers hope this helps.

Looks like this is a dc'ed moel in the Traditions line, was just hoping someone here had some experience with this model.

I would bounce the question of wdfw if you don't get any answers today. You can find fairly good deals on other in-line muzzleloaders that are WA legal if you find out it is not legal.

I shoot a Remington 700 ML, which has been discontinued, but there are several out there.

Thompson Center just released the 2010 Northwest Explorer in-line edition. It uses a hammer to an exposed nipple instead of a bolt, like many other in-lines do.

Post by: whacker1 on February 24, 2010, 11:20:35 AM: Goldtip - here was the other conversation going on the northwest explorer edition. You can see there is lots of confusion on the issue, but the key is that the 1:48 twist seems pretty slow for an in-line.

Most prefer the 1:28 twist for the in-line that shoot saboted bullets in the shorter in-line barrels. If you were shooting a 32 lyman great plains rifle with conicals 1:48 would probably be oK.

It appears both the Remingtons and the Knights were 1:28. I couldn't find any info on the twist of the Traditions Lightning, or maybe overlooked it.

Am still kicking around the idea of getting into Muzzy hunting, just a change of pace, or maybe my incessant need to use/own any and all forms of hunting equipment! Not even sure if I'd enjoy it, so thought this may a inexpensive way to give it a try.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on February 25, 2010, 10:26:26 AM: great sport to get into. if it was not 1:48 on the northwest gun i would own one but with the bullets i like to shoot i don't think they will shoot right from what i have read. so i am not going to spend the money to try. :chuckle:
