Title: My first buck at age 19
Post by: Wyattwk on March 03, 2010, 04:34:22 PM
I've been hunting since I was 14 and this was the first buck I've had a shot at here in Washington. He's a 5x7 muley that I shot South West of Cle Elum opening morning of 2009. He's got about a 24- 25 inch spread and his hanging weight was 174lbs.

No, no, no. You did it all wrong. You have to shoot a dink as a first one, that way, there's nowhere to go but up. Like me, I shot a 2" spike when I was a kid as my first buck. Never shot a smaller one!

Congrats on a fine animal. Good to see a good smile when posing and not degrading the animal by riding him or picking him up. Definately a bench mark for you to shoot for in your future hunts.

Letting all those three points walk during your first five years of hunting paid you back with a very nice 4 point.

Thanks everybody for all the positive feedback. For all of you asking for a story, here it is.

It was only a couple hundred yards off of my parents place there out of Cle Elum. I had heard from my brother that there was a 2x2 and a 2x3 with a couple does walking around the area, so I was keeping an eye out for them. Opening morning I had set out and was on a hill overlooking a low brush area. It was foggy and about 30 min after legal shooting time I heard some movement behind me a bit up the hill and scoped in the two bucks I had been told about. I also saw another doe and heard one a little further up the hill, which i also assumed to be a doe. Being the first bucks I had seen in WA during season, I was eager to take a shot at the 2x3, but I couldn't tell which one it was due to the lack of light and the overcast foggy weather. After about 15 min of alternating between these two bucks in my cross-hairs, I was getting antsy and my patience was running thin. I didn't want to lose this opportunity as they were moving up the hill into thicker brush. Then up near where I thought the two does were, I saw another set of antlers come out of the brush. There standing broadside were at least 8 points worth of antlers. What I thought had been two does bedded down in the brush turned out to be a doe and a big ole' buck. It only took me about 2 seconds to realize I had much more than a 2x3 on my hands. About 10 seconds later I took the shot and hit him about 4 inches below the heart and lungs on a 70 yard shot. (Using a 30.06) After firing I instinctively loaded another round into the chamber and saw that he had double backed and was running perpendicular to my angle to him and was going back down the hill. I still had my scope on 9 power zoom so I put my sights on where I thought he might be running through and waited for him to pass by my field of vision. Right as he did I fired off another round. I initially thought I had missed him the second time but after we had him hung up and skinned I found I had in fact hit him the second time and blown out a portion of his back hip. 2 shots fired, 2 hits. I'm just thankful God gave me the patience to keep hunting after all those years of coming home empty handed, and that I hadn't taken the shot at the 2x3 only 5 minutes earlier.

That's a dandy buck but for the life of me I just can't see that many (5x7) points. Not that is really matters though. Congrats!

I have seen it in person there is a lot of trash and palmation (sp*). He will have to put up a pic when he gets the mount done, the pics that are up now don't do it any justice.
