Title: How many make there own decoys???
Post by: h2ofowlr on March 09, 2010, 08:25:55 PM
I wanted to see how many individuals make there own decoys.  I am going to make up some divers.  There are a few outfits that sell decoy molds or you can carve them out of cork or wood.
•R&R Sports
•American Decoy

I've carved a few, never finished one all the way through.

I use basswood, it's easy to work with.

I am making (my buddy is doing all the work) divers and scoters out of 2 part urethane foam.  Made a mold out of a carved body and heads with silicone and a fiberglass backing.

i want to start making my own decoys. I work with some plastic shops. I was tempted to try to make a line of deeks, but unless i can come up with something creative and new, I dont' want to add just one more dime a dozen crap line with no difference to the market.

definitely want to make my own sea duck coys tho

if you could make affordable sea duck decoys that can handle a few body shots from a shotgun I would be the first one in line :)

I use to make them years ago. But Id always get pissed off when at the end of the year they look like crap. All beat up, cork showing, or a busted keel. It just got to emotional for me. LOL

they are cool decoys, I've hunted off the scoters. however I was disapoinetd at how the line is attached to the foam 'coy itself. very easily tears right through it. They can take the occasionaly gun shot, but need a better rigging setup.
