Title: Mossberg 500
Post by: NWTFhunter on March 16, 2010, 01:56:33 PM
Wondering who shoots the 500 12ga with a 24" barrel and what choke your getting best patterns out of?
I have heard Carltons have pretty good patterns. My buddy picked up a 500 and we were just wondering which one is working best for you.  Thanks for any info

I use mine with an undertaker tuekry choke out of it, i shot a jake 3 years ago with it at 18 yards and found the head 5 yards behind where the bird dropped, so I would say the shot pattern is very tight.

I can't imagine anyone actually "testing" different chokes from different companies. That could run into a lot of money just purchasing all the different company's tubes and then using a very extensive test where in you actually count and then average number of shot within a prescribed circle at a given range, etc, etc...but, after all that BS, I can tell you that I did buy a ex-full from Mossberg for a 20 g model 500 and it shoots a great pattern right on line and the price was reasonable.

That choke is .584" in diameter, flush mounted, and patterns Pb very well. DO NOT shoot Steel or HTL loads through it however; doing so will damage the barrel and choke.

I have an old Charles Daly Field 12 gauge 3" mag and I was looking for a turkey choke for it so I called Carlsons a couple years ago. They asked me what size shot I wanted to be shooting and had a choke to recommend based on that. I told them #5's and they sent me a choke. I shoot the Nitro #5 turkey loads and that thing will about punch a whole I can put my fist through at 20 yards. You might just try giving them a call and tell them what you are working with...I betcha they will have just what you need. Their customer service was A+.

I use the XX full choke that mossberg put on their turkey 500's and run #5 Hevi-shot through it. I've got a good pattern out to 50yds. Longest poke with it was my first Tom at 47 steps. Only time I've missed with it it wasn't the gun's fault ;)

I shoot a Carlson in my 835 and it patterns great.  Not too tight at 15-20 but enough restriction to still put 10 or more in at 45.  I say this a lot, so forgive me if I'm sounding like a broken record.  Be careful choosing a choke.  If you're callin birds, 90+% of shots are gonna be within 30 yards.  You don't want (or need IMO) a choke that makes those shots difficult.  I've killed over 3/4 of my birds at 20 yards +/- 5.  Make sure your choke performs well within the ranges that most of your shots will be taken.  I honestly think that a lot of the time folks would be better off just using there standard full chokes...  :twocents:

Thank you all for your input.  I will let my bud know to call Carlton and see what they reccomend.
BP, I purchased several chokes, and have ran about 10 different shell combos thru em to see what shoots best.  I know most guys dont do that sort of thing !  I just love to get the best pattern available.  I shoot a Rem 870 Turkey Special with a Undertaker choke coupled with Fed 3" # 4.  I can take a head off at anything under 20yds, and reach out very nicely at 50 yds with at least 15 vital hits.
I tried many combos to decied on my choke and shell, cause I love it.
