Title: Rough Ride Alaska
Post by: burrheadcountry on March 19, 2010, 10:40:48 AM
I took this set of pictures while I was riding the ferry out to Metlakatla, Alaska. This boat was working its way back to the Island that is located just out side of Ketchikan. The wind was blowing near forty mile an hour and water was quite choppy. The pictures are not clear because I took the pictures through the windows and they were covered in sea spray.  :o

I have been on the run to Hollis on P.O.W. with waves breaking over the bow of the ferry.  When you live there its just another day.  Thanks for the pictures.

This one is our sister boat following us around Cape Grant on Kodiak.  Was a little lumpy.

I've been out in that crap more than once.

No thanks, no more!  I like my sage brush.

Aww come on! That's just a little afternoon chop with some four to six foot rollers. Get a grip. Keeps the septic from clogging up.   :lol4:

Man I hate it like that.

We would have appreciated a bit of weather in '05 though, too damn nice, couldn't raise a brown bear for all our might.  Great hunt, but never got to see a shooter bear.

Gosh,  I wish I had pictures of the waves breaking over the bow/flight deck of the USS Ranger when we got caught up in a Typhoon outside of Hong Kong in 87. I remember watching off the fantail one of our escort ships about a mile away flat out disapear for minutes in the seas one night. We heard she took a 34 degree roll that night. (that's a lot for a 160 footer) They shouldn't have survived that one. Living in Anacortes for 13 years I worked with a few that had lost loved ones in the seas up north and others that kept going north for different fishery seasons. Some horror stories come back every year. It's crazy though... There are small boats here in Puget Sound all the way to Alaska that go out in just about any weather every day and push-it-to-the-edge. Some of those skippers are NuckinFuts!

I'll have to admit,  He's right. That's normal stuff. If you don't go out in that, you're not making a living.

It's no different down here. Sekiu, Neah Bay, Westport, Illwaco, Depot Bay. Skippers take a crew out to drop pots, run nets or long line in all kinds of weather. I worked with a guy/indian that told me stories of running his Gilnetter out in the San Juans solo. Times when he'd teather himself to the boat. Times he'd fell/got pitched overboard and pulled himself in. Pretty much on the edge with an adreniline rush during the weather.

I remember one time .... Oh hell, there's a lot of us that have been out on the water.. in over our heads.
