Title: muzzle brake
Post by: pronghorn on March 25, 2010, 08:45:44 PM: I've just purchased a Savage Model 12 22-250 and I'm where I can purchase a descent muzzle break.

VAIS breaks is the other choice I would recommend

You won't go wrong with that one or the Vais brake.
They require machine work to install them.

Can I ask why you want a brake on a .22-250?

It works real well at cutting down on the recoil but its loader then crap.
If you get one with holes all the way around like this one, dont rest on a rotten stump for a shot, it will blow rotten wood in your face.
I've shot with a few guys that have Defensive edge brakes and I like them better then what I have.
Heres a picture of the rifle, I crawl stocks pretty bad and with the shorter eye relief of the sheperd on this rifle, I got scope bit a few times before I had the brake put on.

The defensive edge only vents out the sides, which keeps from kicking dirt up into your face, but I believe it is pretty loud

Both have their advantages.

This is a Muscle Brake from Center Shot Rifles. I just recieved this yesterday. It's going on my 338/375 Ruger Savage Striker. The angled ports reduce the recoil, and the first port is at 90deg to create a "wall" of gas to help stop the concusion, or slap in the face, that you get with some muzzle brakes. By all accounts the Muscle brake is pretty darn effective, especially on the bigger handguns.
He makes a different one that's designed for the smaller cased varmint rounds like the 22-250.

I know I can watch my hits in the scope shooting my 300wm. I shoot the same rifle with the 22-250 barrel on it and also don't lose the sight picture. There's hardly any recoil at all to that, no brake.

Post by: littlemac on March 27, 2010, 08:34:46 AM: Kesselrings did a brake like Jamieb's on my 340 Wthrby and I got one direct on my 378 Wthrby. they do one heck of a job but they aren't partner friendly as they are louder than you'd ever imagine, but they are deflecting one heck of a lot of pressure and they defintely drop the ft lbs of kick. As I recall the 378 drops from roughly 90 into the low 40's which puts it near my unbraked 300 Wthrby.

I do wonder what the need is to brake the 22-250 though.

Dave down at harbor guns does a realy nice job. My elk hunting partners all have brakes on thier rifles, done by Dave and they look as nice as mine, you cant see where the line is between the brake and the barrel. It is nice to be able to unscrew the brake for cleaning or to put on a thread protector for hunting. I cant find the tread protector for mine , I'm going to have to buy another one.
