Title: Goldendale hair lice?
Post by: fishermanjoe on April 05, 2010, 09:07:20 PM
Was at my grandparent's house this weekend and saw the deer are having some issues with their hair. It was mostly effecting the yearlings, it looked like they were nawing off their hair. One had a mow-hawk on its back, looked stylish but not healthy. I talked to my dad about it and he said it was lice. Is this true. Or is it some hair disease? Anybody have some knowledge on this topic? Is it fatal?

Yes it is a chewing lice introduced by fallow deer. It can be fatal in winter but it seems the deer are becoming tolerant of it, at least in Kittitas and Yakima county. They seem to hold their air till spring but they shed faster so late spring storms like we have had lately will cause some fatalities.

being from goldendale i see allot in the deer in town there is a few near the swiming pool that i think a 22 shell would do them a favor. there are some bad ones for sure. and about 75% seem to be yearlings
