Title: multi season elk 2010
Post by: mossyoak arrow slinger on April 08, 2010, 09:52:21 AM
well the last couple of years for me has been a real disappointment for me on drawing any tag, not to mention the multiseason tag.  this year was different i got drawn for both deer and elk.  i know we still got a little bit of time before hunting season starts or till we can really get up in the hills and do a little scouting, but i hate to procrastinate when it comes to hunting especially now that i have drawn this tag.  i was strictly wondering if any of you would like to share a little wisdom on these tags as far as what i should try to plan for my hunts so i can be a little more successful.  just wondering what some of you guys have done the last couple years to be successful on your hunts.

A couple of things to consider:
With the really long season, I found it easy to procrastinate a bit with hunting.  I'd go bird hunting instead of deer hunting, etc.

Remember to set your standards and stick with them.  This might mean taking a SMALLER deer than your dream 200" buck.  It's easy to pass up bucks (I did) early in the season because you have lots of time later.  I passed up a really, really nice 3 X 4 for instance and ended up shooting a way smaller buck later.  Although you have a lot longer to hunt, you are still hunting general seasons in WA and it's not that easy (unless you have private land) any way you cut it.  The really long hunting seasons made me a bit cocky.  Hunting in WA reminded me how difficult it is to get a nice buck and to not take opportunities for granted.

I filled the deer tag but waited until late muzzleloader season to do it.  And shot a small 4 point that I would've passed up earlier in the year.  However, it was also a benefit: I got to shoot a deer with a weapon that I would normally not hunt with - I'm generally a bow hunter after years of hunting modern rifle.  So take that into consideration - in some ways it was worth it to shoot a somewhat smaller deer because I got to harvest it in a unique (to me) way.  Very fun, really.  If you're not a bowhunter and decide to try it, then if you can shoot a legal buck you might want to take the opportunity.  It depends on if the experience of shooting something with archery tackle outweighs a later chance to find a bigger buck with another weapon.

To boil it down:
1.  Set you standards and be either willing to eat the tag or shoot a smaller buck (I wouldn't have a problem with either choice - just make sure that you don't regret your decision later)
2.  Plan some hunts that you WILL take so that you don't get sidetracked by other hunting/fishing plans, your wife, etc.  Make sure that you take advantage of it.
3.  Practice with multiple weapons.  If you decide to shoot something you are unfamiliar with, start practicing NOW.  Particularly with archery equipment.  You'll be REALLY sorry if you don't.
4.  Research units that you are unfamiliar with hunting with the other weapon choices.  They might be different than what happens during your normally chosen season.  (IE. there are units that aren't great until late seasons, take a look at the archery seasons/units that you normally don't hunt, etc.)

Don't forget the biggest part of this years whole multi season tag - you still need to get that tag!!  They overdrew by what....200 or soapplicants so you need to be sure you are not sleeping the day they put the tags up for sale or you might be one of the unlucky people who were drawn, didn't get a tag, and still lost all of their points..... :bash:
Not to be debbie downer here, but just remember to put the horse in front of the cart...   :hello:

Do the same things you would normally do if you didn't have the multi-season permit. Hunt hard and do a lot of pre-season scouting. I would try to hunt a unit that is open for archery, muzzleloader, and rifle seasons so that you could spend all your time in the same area. I would also plan on getting divorced, if you are married, and plan on either quitting your job, or taking 3 months off so you can take advantage of every day of every season.

rememeber to look at the other posts on here they are still kinda unoffical, and they over drew elk by 250 and the deer by 500. i got the deer and i am sure this overdraw will have some rushing to buy in fear of losing out. but its still hard to spend 180 or in your case 360 for both.

I'm sure there will still be a 2nd drawing.  I bet more people than you think flake on paying for one reason or another.  Not to say I won't be buying mine @ 12:00 AM on the first day you can buy.  :IBCOOL:

The results are official, I spoke to WDFW and they said the results have been confirmed.  When you get drawn for elk and deer you check right away for sure!  I was drooling for the season to start immediately after finding out .

So I didn't get drawn for multiseason elk this year, but online it's reporting I pulled the deer tag.  I tried to buy online today, but it wasn't an option.  I stopped at Wholesale, and the girl called WDFW about it, and she was told they're not going to go on sale until the 23rd...  Don't know whether anyone else can confirm or deny?

Yes, the 23rd was the same date someone else posted in another thread on here, for the date they would go on sale. You better plan on staying up late the night before that day, and get it at 12:01 a.m.

I've drawn the deer 3 years in a row.  First year passed up a lot of bucks.  Bucks I should have never passed on but I got greedy.  Ended up shooting a smaller four point whitetail on the last day of late muzzleloader season.  Next two years I never made it past early muzzleloader season before punching my tag.  Its definitely not a trophy tag.  I like it because it allows me to put in for all the really good rifle tags but I can still hunt mzzleloader season so I don't have to do the pumpkin patch dance.  Hunt hard and shoot what makes you happy.  Good Luck!!

Thanks for all the input you guys everything is greatly appreciated. i will make sure i am awake at 1201 on the 23rd so i can fork out the money to buy these tags. like you were saying halflife i would love to kill an animal with a weapon i have never used, luckfully for me i have killed elk and deer with both archery and modern, i have never even shot a muzzleloader so that should be learning experiment.  once again thanks for all the suggestions and i am looking forward to talking more and seeing how everyone elses hunt goes. thanks guys:)

With all the hysteria, the state has caused by deliberately overdrawing, what do ya wanna bet that the system will crash by 1203a.m. and apps and purchases lost.

I was drawn for it last year, but went in on the 30th to buy it and you had to buy it by the 29th.  My mistake.  I called WDFW and tried to get it, but they said to late.  But, said I wouldn't loose my points.  When the draw went through this year, it only had me at one point, instead of 4.  They are going to issue my points back.  Unfortunatly they are not doing additional draws this year.  They drew a larger number to make up for those that don't buy the license, so they will only be having the one draw.

Drew both Deer and Elk. Probably won't buy the deer tag.

So if you get drawn for a multi-season permit, are you supposed to be sent anything by mail that you bring with you to purchase your license/tags? I recall that they ask what method of hunting you're using; how does the multi-season permit affect the purchase of a license/tag?

Can someone explain how that works for me?

can someone clear up for me what the " points used" means next to draw results . it says 2 points for my elk but i know i had 4. it says be fore "06" are zero, does that mean i lost points earned before then. :dunno:
Title: Re: multi season elk 2010

It means how many points you had that were used in that drawing. For 2006 and previous years, they are just not showing your points. That's all that means.

Could also be the average of points if you put in as a group. :dunno:

That's true. I hadn't thought of that.

I got drawn for multi elk first time ever! I find it interesting that they draw 660 names and only sell 600 tags. So on the 23rd there is a mad scramble to buy your tags. We'll probably bring down their system.  Why can't we just glow in the fact that we got the tag and not worry about whether we beat the rush?

This is the first year they have done it that way. In previous years they had the problem of many people who were drawn not purchasing the permit, then they had to do the draw over again, and again, and again, and again. Hopefully this will be an improvement over that fiasco.

My dad got both deer and elk letters in the mail today :IBCOOL: Tags go on sale on the 23rd first come first serve.

I read in the new regs you can "ghost point" multi season tags from here on out. A few people wanted that option this year.
