This is what I am doing today instead of shed hunting.....

Nice, looks like a kill from this morning huh, cool are you going to skin it for a full body mount, or just want the pelt?
-
Watch that BLOOD Boneaddict! Wash that stuff out because it will cause the hair in that area to slipp faster. Denatured alcohol on the ears will help prevent the ears from slipping. Thaw critters on a towel. Keeps them from thawing in a puddle of blood/body fluids/water.
-
The fox is skinned for a full mount. Slit him down teh back from the back of the head to tail and skinned him out. I managed to strip the tail out without incidence. Thats a new one for me. I stuck the end of it in a vice and took a tail stripping tool and pulled as hard as I could. I was trying to decide to do dry preservative or tan him. I salted him up real well, and headed for the sportsman show. I got back and stuck him in the pickle. He will be mounted up another day. I airbrushed the moose and am happy how that turned out. I also worked on my ear on that deer, and managed to make them TOO pink. Took the airbrush and blended it with some of that white flesh. I'll let it sit for awhile and see what I think.
-
Called him in.
-
where did you find him at? In general
-
I'm guessing Ferry or Stevens Co?
-
Pend Oreille.
Saw one last week, or was that two weeks ago, over by ephrata. Ran across the freeway. All Tail.
-
I missed a good shot at one over by Ephrate last year. I had the mini 14 and it aint real accurate. Boy i sent some lead flying. I really wish I had killed him. One of these days i will get one around here.
-
Interesting. Never really would have thought of that as fox country.
He is out of the pickle, neutralized and now cooking in the Mckenzie tan.
-
Cooking in the McKAenzie Tan? The McKenzie Tan is a brush on tan! How do you have it in the tan?
-
You brush it on, fold it up and let it cook. Pretty simple.
-
Yeah I now that. When I read it, it sounded like you had the fox soaking in the stuff. I was thinking OMGosh what a mess. At leant it's well oiled! ;)
-
By the time you get inside the tail, the legs and everywhere else, you and the fox are soaking in it. :chuckle: Little more difficult than the average deer cape. I screwd up a ear, stuck my thumb through it. I was going to do bondo. I'm not sure sewing would do the trick...thinking super glueing it.VERY CAREFULLY
-
I wouldn't super glue. I'd use zap-a-gap! Zap-a-Gap won't crystalize when it hits water and turn white. Clean the area with denatured alcohol. The super glue/zap a gap won't stick well to the oily skin. Very Careful! If you get it in the hair on the ear you screwed. I would only super glue 1/8 of an inch just enough to seal the ear for the bondo.
-
My thumb is way bigger than an 1/8 of an inch. :)
-
I have a new bottle of zapa gap so we are good to go.
-
I am talking about 1/8" on the out side of the ear. How big is the hole?
-
I got ya....I wondered if thats what you meant.......
basically the ear. I was slipping my finger or thub down it seperating it. Lots of finesse you know, and its MUCH easier than a deer. Anyway boom out goes the thumb. Its about the ear. It will actually probably make it easier that its a good portion. I can ge tit lined up better and less cahnce of mess.
-
:) Don't feel bad. It happens. Happens to me every once in a while. Their are many ways to fix blown out ears. Dryer sheets work good repairing skin on the back side of the ear. ;)
-
I have never ever blown out an ear ;) ok , I'm lying. Doesnt your heart just kind of sink when you see your thumb come popping out the other side! :bash:
-
I never have to use the ol' fleshing machine no more since I dont do my own tanning! Boy I dont miss those days let me tell ya!
-
Hey my post disapeared! >:(
-
I have a mini flesher, but one thing I found when working with my moose is I didn't have the compressor to drive it. Then I found with hese thin skinned guy, just my fingers work fine. I have an ear to fix and a couple holes to sew. Never skin an animal when partially frozen. ;)
-
:) Actually good that you started skinning when it ws still partialy frozen! Keeps the temp of the hide down.
-
True, but its easier to cut the hide.
-
I have shot a couple elk in Montana when the temp was -30 and couldn't get them out the samevening so had to leave them over night. It really bites skinning 1/4 in by 1/4 inch in the cold.
-
Well....Zap a Gap was solid, so used superglue. Had some issues with the form being heavier than the fox was even though it matched the measurements. I got to do a bunch of carving, and then trying to make it proportional with the same muscle structure. Got i carved then danded and had a very...very .....tight fit around the shoulders.

-
now I am just waiting for the eyes to dry a bit then put the finishing touches on them. Had fun tucking the lips, not nearly as easy as deer.

-
I have always split them down the belly, but followed Michelles advise on going down the back. Makes for gettin on the form easier I think. I don't like the fact the seem is more obvious, but I think I got it ok.

Now its all about trying to figure out what I want to do with him. I figure perched up on a stump andhave a pheasant hiding underneath him about ready to burst. I have to decide whether I want to use one of my black ones or a regular one. I have one of each to use. I think I'll us the regular one and save the black one for a full mout on its own. I also thought about having one at his feet dead, but Roseann isn't real partial on dead things. She thinks it takes away from the art of it. Its probably going to end up in the garage anyway, so I guess I'll do what I want.

That is bad ass bone. I would definitely put a pheasant in the mount.
-
I am trying to decide between dead at feet, hiding by stump the fox is looking over, or flying or launching. I think I like the idea of hiding at mbase of stump that the fox is looking over.
-
did you do the turkey in the background on the wall?
-
Yep, about 15 years ago. It was my second bird. My first bird was a ruffed grouse. Then I started this turkey. You know the difference in size of a turkey versus a grouse. I thought holy moly. I hand painted the head. Its been hanging in the garage since. Its survived several moves, storage shed the life in the garage.
-
I like it hiding behind the stump also. That would be a pretty original idea.

X2

make that X3
-
Nice work bone. I think the stump or even a log would look cool.

Nice work Bone! ! ! ! This is your first small mammal, right?
The ears are to far to the side. They should be more on top of the head. The pose that you chose is an alert pose. Almost exactly like the grey fox I did.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi126.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp115%2Fmichellestaxidermy%2FDSCN0581.jpg&hash=401cac38fa4ae5e5a3229e901b552394d0c183be)
All feet that are going to be attached to a hard surface (log, ground, branch, etc) should dry on one. Other wise the foot won't be formed to what they are touching. :) I try to build my bases first and than mount the animal on the base so I can form it to the base.

This was actually my first attempt at a small mammal. I used bondo in the ears and Dry Preservative. The same stuff I sent to you Bone.
-
Thanks Michelle. I ahve mounted a fisher. I fought with t he ears and the form a bunch. I ended u having to hand carve a bunch to get it to come together. This fox was way lean in the shoulders and neck compared to the form even though it matched the other measuremts. We'll make it work I'll be drawing his attention under him, which should change his alertness a bit.
-
did you use a form for the ears or the fiberglass like stuff?
-
Me or Boneaddict?
-
either i guess, i was just curoius to see what you guys like to use. i personally like the fiberglass way better than a ear form. a bit messy but gives it that natural shape, IMO
-
I use Bondo on almost all my mounts. Most of the time on larger game (elk, Moose, Etc) I will use earliners. It is easier to give the ears a natural shape with ear liners. I prefer bondo, because I have been using it for over 5 years and I have gotten good with it. Plus it is quicker than removing the cartilage and waiting for the ear adhesive to set up.
The trick to using Bondo is to add a good bit of fine chopped fiber glass in with it and NOT putting to much in the ear. Once the cartilage drys it gives it just that much more of a back bone.
-
I used bondo. I think its one of the best ways to get the natural ear. I don't like the troubles I have had with earliners. I add alot of chopped fiberglass to it, and it bonds really well to the ear.
-
Watch hunting around the Ephrata area or soap lake.....you may get shot in the back! Where there is one moron there are more to follow.

What? :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
-
Oh on the first page Ephrata was brought up. Soap lake was where that sheriff was shot in the back by a guy coyote hunting over there a couple months ago, Ephrata and soap lake aren't that far apart.
-
ahhhhh. gotcha! ;)
-
Saw 5 coyotes out there today in about an hours time, and only two of them were together. Could have killed every one of them. I swear they know when you are packing or not.

That is just an AWESOME mount. Sure hope mine comes out that good. Very nice work!

Can't see the pics at work. Marking for later...
