Title: looking for steelhead buddy
Post by: thunder on April 23, 2010, 09:23:23 AM
I am looking for a steelhead buddy, I am moving to Bellingham in June, looking to hit the rivers.  I have been spoiled here in Alaska, I guess It will be fishing, not catching.  I know what im doing, so you wont have to explain how to fish for hours, Just looking for new friends, who want to get after it, split gas.

Welcome. :)  Seems to be plenty of steelheaders on your side of the mountains on this site.  You shouldn't have trouble finding a fishing buddy.  I'm on the eastern half with not even close to the quality of steelhead fishing you are around.  Look me up next season (Sept/Oct) and maybe we can hit a river or two over on this side.

I'm in the Army, so I will be recruiting out of bellingham, trust me I tried to stay in AK, Washington is way better, than Georgia, that was the other option.  I don't mind taking a drive to the east side, Sept/Oct ??? that's hunting season, I will be thinking about putting meat in the freezer, I would love to go over there and hunt muley, elk, upland birds.  the fishing in Washington isn't that bad, I hope anyway, its not like your catching 20 salmon a day, but with a little knowledge, a guy should be able to hook a few fish.

its not so much the lack of fish, its the crowds :bash:. plenty of hunting on the westside too. id think you havnt taken washingtons hunting class yet but you can still hunt this year you just gotta get some type of "permit" that lets allows you to hunt for a year. im not to familiar with it but there should be some guys on here that can give you more details on it

you can either take hunter safety or else get a once in a life time one year exemption. My buddy did it last year but you have to have someone with a hunting licence like sponsor you or something like that.

Does his Alaska hunters ed not count? I know mine counts when I go to Idaho and Colorado.

(Assuming he's taken hunter's ed if that's his goat in his picture)

His hunter education counts if he has one.

Mine was from New York in 1982 and it has worked for all states

My wife got hers in Alaska 2001 and hers has worked here with no problems.

Only thing I can tell you though John, if you buy a resident license for Alaska then you get stationed here in Washington, you cannot buy a resident license here in Washington unless you go to Alaska and turn yours back in.

I know I have been down this road plenty of times. Some people will tell you other wise but totally illegal to have a resident license from two different states at the same time.

I don't fish steelies that much anymore but I fish a lot of Bass, I am down here right by Fort Lewis so if you want to take a day and go out for some of those let me know. I know how it sucks to get everything dialed in to what you are doing and then the Army moves you away.

First off welcome, especially from a fellow Alaskan Ex resident :'(, but what BLKBEARKLR states is 100% correct.  My old bud is in charge of the Brown shirts and they look into this hard core every season, pretty easy to do.....  As for Steelheads your out of luck with me, my "guide" hasn't shown me his trick and secrets yet, but if your into or want to give Sturgeon a try give me a shout, I down at McChord at least five days a week...

I am down.  I'm also in the Army, currently deployed to Afghanistan.  The Army is playing a sick joke on me also.  I came down on recruiting orders.  I've spent my last 3 years in Washington finding places where other people don't go.  I'll show you what I know.  There's lots of opportunities for flyfishing in Washington.  I'll be sad to leave that's for sure.  Unless they send me to Alaska.  I think I would be happy with that.  Ha

Thanks for welcoming me, I have hunter ed, I would love to fish for sturg, I was down at lewis 10 yrs ago, I did a lot down there, fish and hunt, I was thinking the closest place to fish for sturg is marysville, called fish and game yesterday, they said im good with hunt ed, asked a  bunch of questions, there telling me that hunting is not very good around bellingham, so I guess i will have to find a spot, have killed elk down in margerete unit a long time ago, killed a buck every yr on ft lewis, and murderd the steelhead and sturgeon, but this was all 10 yrs ago, and everything i did was south wash, now im north,  I will drive to fish and hunt, I plan on hitting the steelhead for a few weeks in june, as I have to head to south carolina, for 2 months, be back  sept 1, just in time for hunting, but I will have no scout time in, thats why im looking to find some buddies that i can tag along with, I will def return the favor, we can make a trip to ak,
