Title: Stolen.. need a broken cam
Post by: Craig on May 04, 2010, 01:31:05 PM
Well one of my cameras got stolen ( at least it was a cheep one ). I put it out four days ago and it's gone. I found one of my bungee cords cut and on the ground. I am pretty sure i know who took it. She has left a note on it before saying she does not like other people back there and thinks that hunting should not be aloud on state land. I know I should have moved the camera but I thought it was safe. This is on public land but the only way to get there is though private property unless you go cross country about a mile and a half through some real nasty stuff. she is the only person I have seen back there in two years. I have about ten pictures of her messing with my cameras.

I need a broken cam i can set up as a decoy and try and bust her ass. Anyone have on I can have or buy for real cheap?

I have better ones with her face on it.

People like that really piss me off. >:(

I wish you luck in catching her.  I wish I had a camera that you could use.

I know there is build thread on trail cams. Maybe you can get an empty case to set up as a decoy.

Old or new telephone junction box , spray paint, old sunglass lenses glued inside the holes and you have a dummy cam.

Try ebay. Lots of non-working trail cameras sold on there. Look especially for Moultrie.   :bash:

Or just build a small box, put a fake lense on it...see if she takes the bait...more than likely she isnt checkin to see if the camera is legit..only that it is there.

I would notify the police.  Your camera may not be the only one she has tampered with.

How often does she come around your cameras?  After you put out the first and second one did they come up missing?

That *censored* just pisses me off.

I just got a small used case for $12. I will cut two holes in it and glue a sunglass lens inside with a little weight and lock it shut. and hope it gets stolen.

Craig how are you going to catch her?  Are you going to put a second cam up in a tree pointed at the dummy?

I'd call the cops, especially with the note and all the trail camera pictures you have of her.  She's probably the owner of that private piece you mentioned and she thinks because her property butts up against it she can set the rules for the state land.  Wouldn't be hard to track her down and I'm sure with a little pressing from authorities she'd fess up.

Could not wait for the new case to come so I went out the the garage and found a old gun cleaning kit case. Here is the start. Going to put some weight in it and lock it up so you can't open it. What else should I do to make it look real? I am going to buy a IR camera and up it up in a tree with a bear box and a bike cable with a lock.

add something that looks like a flash, hit value village and grab an old camera tear the flash off and put it on.

then hit radio shack get a small red led, wire it up to a battery, and see if you can manage some kind of label that says "battery" or something (as in battery is low, that's why it's not taking a picture of your ugly thieving mug)

Rig it so the next time she tried to screw with it she gets a nice little "shock".

It might be fun to set up a camera on her front door to catch her reaction to questioning from the police.  :chuckle:

Good luck getting her! I would think you already have enough evidence to give her some trouble back.

Craig - I don't know the laws, so I am asking out of curiousity.  What is the law related to taking your trail camera while hung on State Land?  I am asking because she is morally wrong by stealing it, but I am not sure how the law addresses items that are on State Land.  On private propertyshe is definitely eligible for prosecution for the theft, but with public property I don't know how the law applies.  I am not an attorney, just curious

To add....your tact might also include that she is interferring with a hunt or harrassing hunters by removing items used in the hunting process that don't belong to her.  Since it is legal to hunt coyotes year round.....You hunt coyotes and trying to pattern a particular group of coyotes that you had seen in the area.  She removed your game camera and thus is harassing hunters.  Just a suggestion.... I hate thieves, and want to make sure that she is taught the law and that she can't just remove cameras, because she doesn't believe hunting should occur on State property.   Let me know if you need the RCW regarding hunter harrassment, I have it somewhere.

make sure you camo your camera when it is set with some natural moss or something that way it won't stand out

On posted private property you can add criminal trespass 2. On state you still have theft and maybe but wouldnt stick criminal trespass 2 unless they show intent. A second theft would help show intent.

So here's a question. If someone breaks into your car on state land does that mean they can't get prosecuted  :dunno: Only sounds reasonable that if someone stole something of yours then they should be prosecuted. It shouldn't matter where it is, state land or not. It's your property and they took it. If you can prove it then nail them to the wall.  :twocents:

Good luck. I hope you catch the wench.

i hope to see the pics with her caught, on another note i would make sure to turn the flash off on the other camera you don't want her to see it flash and lose it as well and i dought she will be out there at night getting it. :twocents:

Craig - Keep us posted on your progress and anything you find out from law enforcement.

Also, you may try to superglue/seal the box closed just to make it tougher on her. :chuckle:

The trap is set.

I Leave in the morning for Maui. So when I get home hopefully one camera is gone. The new one ( watching the bait cam ) has two 3" bolts, a bear box with a lock, A bike cable with a master lock around a big tree, and camo around it. Hopefully that one is still there. I will let you know if anything happens in a week.

Anything you leave in the national forest, or private land for that matter,
COULD be considered littering.

And...?

Have you heard of anyone getting cited for littering on national forest land by leaving a trailcam for a week or month?

That would be a stretch.  Littering would be if you don't plan to pick up the item.....you know, throw it away.  A camera strapped to a tree that you come back to check often would not fall under the definition of littering...........

And...?   No I have not heard of anyone being sited for a trail cam. NOTICE I SAID COULD, I do know of established camps being sited for littering for their buried stash. And yes it would be a stretch, again the key word here is COULD. Big brother works in mysterious ways....... INO

I just had a thought while cathing up on this thread.

Do you think there is a chance she may have pulled it off the tree and threw it into the bushes?  Did you search the brush around the area?

I do hope you didn't add any electricity to this.

1) you do like I do and leave a bad wire somewhere, Murphy comes along and decides now is a great time to start a fire.
2) you get sued

No electricity.

Just a plastic box, sunglass lenses, old camera flash, and some rocks for weight, glue and tape.

Just install it in an old camera case and hook the trip wire to a screw that you run into the tree behind the case.

She will get the message.
