Post by: bowhunterforever on May 06, 2010, 01:20:32 AM
So i have been thinking about putting in for a turnbull cow tag. It says turnbull hunts will be administerd and access fee collected buy turnbull NWR, for info visit www.fws.gov/turnbull (http://www.fws.gov/turnbull) . I have looked on the link and cant find any info/access fees for the turnbull hunt. Anybody have any info about this hunt/access fee? Thanks

I would put in for it for sure if I lived closer. I can't imagine the fee being that high. Probably will be something like $5.00. If it's much more than that I wouldn't pay it. After all, you'd be doing them a favor in getting the elk numbers under control.

The general vehicle access fee is $5. Not positive during the hunt. I will be out there next week, I will try to find out.

I was also considering this as a hunt choice.  They have the fee set at $25 for the hunt, which seems a bit step considering the normal fee is much cheaper.  Also, if you are not using non toxic ammo you are required to remove your gut pile.  You only are allowed to hunt in certain units within the refuge, depending on the method of hunting.

I also put in for that cow tag, I guess I would have to use my barnes X bullet, solid copper, 250grs. out of my           338RUM   :chuckle:

Is the fee per day or for the hunt duration?  I can't find any information on their site either?

Don't know if it's daily or for the hunt.  I know that their normal access fees are either daily or you can buy a yearly pass but that is not specified for the hunts.  I would guess it's for the hunt but don't take my word for it.

OK. I was at Turnbull Fri. with my sons 6th grade field trip. The folks that were giving the tour, were none too happy about hunting on the refuge, even though they are causing significant habitat damage, especially to the aspen groves. I didn't feel comfortable pressing the issue by asking alot of questions. I'm sure there are some there that would be more forthcoming but I didn't run into them.
I did understand that there was only a small portion of the 18,000 acres available to hunt and sounds like it will be pretty restricted.
Has anyone called the number posted for more info??

PS There is a very large set of sheds in the visitor center, I know nothing about scoring elk, but I would consider them massive.

I have not called them about it, but it is a very restricted hunt.  I decided to pass on it.  I can apply for other tags where I have more freedom and better odds.
