Title: Some Oak Creek shots
Post by: javman on February 18, 2008, 09:00:20 PM: New guy here... I drove over White Pass to the Oak Creek feeding station a couple weeks ago. There were a couple nice racks out there :)

Post by: javman on February 18, 2008, 09:25:59 PM: Thanks! I shoot a Nikon D200 with a 80-400mm zoom. Most of the time when I'm out in the woods, it's not long enough and fast enough to catch the skittish creatures. But at a feeding station, it's great!

What do you shoot with Pope? I've drooled over some of your muley shots -- awesome stuff!

Post by: Bookworm on February 18, 2008, 09:49:32 PM: My wife and I made the trip over to drool over the elk at Oak Creek this weekend. There didn't seem to be as many as usual. I thought that with some of the snow gone some might have left the feed lot. Saw a couple of dandy bulls, one that I would dearly love to slap my tag on. Saw a little raghorn that was something of a freak. On his right side he was normal. On his left side he had his pedicle showing like he had dropped his antler on that side but it was actually growing out of the side of his head. I don't know if we got any pics of him but I will post what we got when they get downloaded.

Nice pictures coming out of the feed station. Its actually fairly hard to get decent shots there so it doesn't look like a barnyard. Great photos!

Post by: popeshawnpaul on February 19, 2008, 12:46:15 PM: That D200 sure gives photos a "surreal" feeling to them. Almost like a painting. It's hard to describe. Those elk pics are great. I've been trying to get up there for quite some time for that trip plus the beaches. The problem is that every time I get out there I fish the whole time and never shoot anything. I'm hoping to take a day off from fishing on a rough ocean day and shoot a bunch of those spots out there. I didn't think a person could get much for quality at the feeding station but you have proved me wrong.

I'm in the Canon camp. I shoot anything with an L on the lens. Right now I'm between telephoto lenses. I'm sure envious of the Nikon 200-400 f4 lens. Talk about the perfect wildlife lens...except it's a huge brick and very heavy. I'll probably end up with another 300mm F2.8 L IS. If I could only have one telephoto lens and money was no object, I think I would carry the 500mm f4 IS...but that's another topic. Keep posting, great pictures.

I've always thought about buying that lens. Every time I almost buy it I read a story about a bad copy or I get to thinking about the F5.6. However, I think the reputation for bad copies is way overblown. I guess the newer ones are mostly good copies.

I have simply seen some amazing work done by that lens on sites like dpreview.com. The versatility to go from 100-400 with IS is amazing. It would be about the perfect backpacking lens IMO... I've also heard it's the perfect African safari lens.

One thing I've never known is at what focal length does it go from F4 to F5.6? At about 250mm? Let me know if you know. This is one of the few lenses I've never shot with and I've always wanted to...
