thinking about putting in for a archery tag for elk in one of these units but curious what the country is like dont make it down to that neck of the woods anybody willing to post some pics
-
lick creek...the 2nd pic might be on the wrong side of the road to be the lick creek unit, can't remember for sure.
-
I've got some better ones if I can find them...the smoky ones are from when the school fire was burning 5 years or ago or so...
I'll keep looking.
-
wow that last photo is realy cool jackelope
-
can't say as much about dayton unit but lick creek can be steep and deep if you are chasing a big bull. best be in real good shape if you are thinking about lick creek great hunt but not for the week. other than the main roads not much area you can drive to a kill. could be several miles from a road and several thousand feet in elevation changes if you go down into a hole like the north fork of asotin creek, devils tail bone or dark canyon. lots of public land though. hey jackelope that last pick does not look like lick creek? not many wheat fields in that unit. that's my :twocents:
-
it's off of the peola road looking into the lick. it might not be standing in the lick but the background is for sure. it's just a short distance from the 1st one I posted. I might have been standing in the peola unit...can't remember for sure. The neat thing about lick creek is the different types of country there is there...lots of different kind of stuff. You can hunt deep and steep or take it easy, whatever your style is.
:dunno:
-
here is a picture looking into the north fork of asotin creek. if this works :dunno:
-
dayton sucks, put in for lick crk.
-
dayton sucks, put in for lick crk.
lick creek sucks too...put in for little naches.
:)
-
BLUEBULLS beat me to it, save ya the hassle man, no elk in dayton :dunno:
-
A couple other lick creek pic's--

long range crummy photography in the almost dark accompanied by large tracts of private land make for bad pics of huge whitetails.
:'(

thanks for the pics looks like awesome country the steeper the better

dayton sucks, put in for lick crk.
lick creek sucks too...put in for little naches.
:)
don't tell him that :bash: dam :chuckle:
-
dayton sucks, put in for lick crk.
I agree.. :)

BBB has a point.
I've gotten to know the Dayton area over the last 3yrs. By driving up there after work and just taking diffrent trails/roads walking.
But there is alot of people that would rather just ask you for your honeyhole, rather than put in the time.
-
I understand not giving out any honey holes, but he's just asking for pics of the units. Thats pretty darn harmless. I've spent the last 10 years going down there and learning the area. It's no secret that there are a few nice bulls down there.
-
I know it is no secret that there are big bulls in the blues. What I am trying to say is get off your ass and scout. If you like what you see and don't die of a heartatack while hiking then by all means apply for the hunt. If you are lazy enough to apply for a hunt because the pictures look "elky" and you know big bulls have been killed in that unit without ever setting foot down there then go for it. I guess i'm not pissed at the post but at the damn draw system that lets these *censored*s with 2 points (he may have more) draw a unit they have never been to and I have 10 and can't draw an archery tag to save my life :bash:
-
I would hope that people would atleast go look a unit over before putting in for it. I sure wouldn't put in for a tag because someone said the unit was good. Sure there have been some good bulls coming from these units but it's tough country and if you go in unprepared you might be disappointed. If you're in the wrong area, you might go days without seeing elk. If you do put in and draw, hopefully you'll spend plenty of time scouting and make it happen.
-
So sometimes people should look at things from both sides of the argument instead of being stuck on there side. I will just explain a little, the guys that live and hunt the west side (ME) hunt the brush, and then we draw the multi tag so we can apply anywhere so we put in for Dayton (i didn't draw but what if i did). I don't hunt the east side but i have a ton of points and i am willing to hunt hard to find a BIG bull, we shoot mostly rag horns here in the brush. SO if i would have drawn that tag i would have scouted but it would cost me 200 in fuel every time i came over to scout, what is more effective? Come over 10 weekends scouting costing me 2000 in fuel or comming over 1-2 times and then doing some internet scouting.
And just because some *censored* as that has 2 points draws (it is luck of the draw still) doesn't mean they will not hunt hard or scout.
I have 12 points and can't draw but i realize it is still luck of the draw. People bitch about the draw system but nobody has come up with a realistic change to our draw system (remember life isn't fair) And i havn't drawn a tag either but i could. I put in for colorado elk and we will be going next year. Guess what, we have never been there and we will be doing some internet scouting there to.
-
internet scouting is a lot like a hunting game on your computer.... it's not what hunting and scouting are all about. To me, scouting the area, and learning the area myself is just as big a part of the hunt as killing an animal. I take a lot of pride in my abilities and accomplishments of finding areas and finding game. I wouldn't be near as humble or proud if someone else did it for me. I don't have a lot of money but hunting related activities are important enough to me that I make things work.
As far as internet scouting, yeah, it shortens the process and it's dirt cheap but I gaurantee that you will not get the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that I do.
please don't take this the wrong way. I don't see a problem with others doing it but it's not for me.
-
Oh i won't take it the wrong way, i am just not going to spend thousands of dollars and spend weeks and weeks off of work to learn a hunt i may never get drawn in. It is the same for the east side guys that put in on a hope and prayer that they draw margaret and then ask for advice.
The way i feel about it is there is so few tags to draw that if you want info on a special permit hunt that has no general hunt then i have no honey holes there because i can't hunt it either.
Sorry for the hijack of the thread. But it seams like people are pissed because they cant draw a tag. Well at least you have a chance to draw every year. The best units in oregon and colorado (examples right off the top of my head) you will never draw unless you have max points. You can put in for them but you have no chance. Even with max points it will take 35 years to cycle through the guys with max points in wenaha or mill creek in oregon. I like our point system and i have never been drawn, but i have a chance.
In colorado we started puting in 7 years ago and it took 12 points at that time to draw units 1,2, 201, 210 now you are at 20 points to draw them. Could you imagine trying to get into big game hunting in colorado right now with no points.
-
I was enjoying looking at these pictures and this thread until it turned into yet another bashing session, like many other threads on here tend to turn into. I agee with MHWASH, get off your high horse BBB! The guy asked for pictures, not anything more specific, big friggin deal!! People get on here and bitch about others asking questions like they have never asked for any help before. I understand your argument BBB, but who are you to just throw out comments like "assjockey and "*censored*" in reference to other hunters or people who have fewer points than yourself. Way to ruin a perfectly good thread and make something out of nothing.
-
for a lot of folks internet scouting has become part of the game. There's numerous steps to the scouting process. Hell at least it's May and not september, right?
BigBullBalls...you ought to get off your high horse. I suppose you were never an *censored* with 2 points, ehh? would you consider yourself an *censored* if you drew with 2 points? good gravy man, grow up!!
I haven't heard about a big bull coming out of Lick Creek ever.
-
Wow. This site has really changed over the years. I can see getting excited if it's a week before the season but not this early. Whats wrong with wanting to see pics of an area he's never been to before. Maybe he just wants to see if it's steep and deep so he can get away from hunters. Maybe he just wants to see if it's thick or sparse. Sorry BBB but you jumped the gun on this one. If it were right before the season I'd definately be on your side but prior to even applying for the hunt? I think you should have at least left some of the name calling out of your post.
I hunt unit 139 for deer and the whole unit is private. Every year people get on here a week before the season and want to know where to go since they've never been there. It even says it's private in the regs. That irritates me to no end to not get drawn in a unit in which you have permission and then someone who not only has never been there before but also has no permission does get drawn. So I see what your saying but it's just too early to be that pissed about some pictures.
-
Yes, at one point I was an *censored* with 2 points but I knew what I was applying for and had scouted the area except for once. I was definitly an *censored* when I applied for the Quilomene late archery tag and drew without ever setting foot in the unit, I had just heard it was good. I took my lumps on that hunt and learned a lesson. The best hunting in the state is the GMU you know the best.
And what is this about the high horse? I am just sick of people who want to just ride the coattails of those of us who have put in the leg work. If you hear about a great area then go check it out (maps, harvest reports, aerial photos, talk to the bio, bull to cow ratios, foot work, ect...). I am sure most of the folks on this site have put their time in on the units they hunt and the areas they apply for. Apparently i'm the only one who has a hard time with a guy who wants to make his application decision based on photographs of a unit he has never been to.
-
I have a hard time figuring out why people even posted pics. I believe in laying the boot leather down before I start looking for handouts, I'm with BBB
-
I see the points all of you are making on the internet scouting. I don't think a few pictures should make or break if a person should apply for a unit. I do believe that they should inspire ridgefire to get a map and maybe plan a trip to scout the unit. As a suggestion I will say that if you are going to hunt archery lick creek is open to antlerless or spike OTC, and dayton is spike only, please hunt one of these before applying for a any bull tag. and by the way i am sorry for questioning your photograph jackelope i have never thought of looking a the lick creek unit from that angle.
-
i thought that was one of the great things about this site, guys were able to share and gain knowledge about where and when to hunt. the guys that helped me last year i owe big time and told them that im willing to share any and all information i have about any of the units i currrently hunt.
-
I guess some people are just a lot better at this stuff than others.
Take that for whatever you think it means...there's a couple possible meanings.
;)
-
A guy could look at google earth for 20 minutes and get a feel for the terrain and the looks of any GMU.
I don't think a couple pictures hurt things too much? Chill out guys, you'll be happy to know you have a chance at drawing a tag when you have 2 points. Don't get so butt hurt because you put in for one of the areas with the worst drawing odds in the state and don't get drawn.
-
Don't get so butt hurt because you put in for one of the areas with the worst drawing odds in the state and don't get drawn.
:chuckle:
-
man some people need to learn to relax. i was in no way intending for this to turn into some type of freebie or anything like that i simply wanted to get an idea of what the country looks like not to try to weasel my way into someones honey hole. its no secret that there is big bulls in the units down there but i am not going to drive six to eight hours just to see what the country is like when i may not draw a tag for several years. sorry to get some of you all hot and bothered and want to thank those that left the positive replies. would like to see more pics perhaps some kill pics if anyone has them.
-
How bout we make it real easy! If you don't want to share your knowledge then DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-

:yeah:

Exactly Alan...
-
I'm not against sharing info, Ive done it many times, but send me photos so i can make my choice that kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but hey to each his own.
-
Don't get so butt hurt because you put in for one of the areas with the worst drawing odds in the state and don't get drawn.
I couldn't agree more.
Someday I hope to be the "*censored*" that draws a great tag! If'n you don't feel the need to share, don't. But don't derail the thread, I was enjoying the pictures!
-
Here's another Dayton Pic. The elk are just to the left of the *censored*... :chuckle:
-
dude...it even says they're *censored*s right in the photo caption.
:chuckle:
-
I've killed several animals in areas I was never in or had seen first hand before the season. Yes It would be nice to have all kinds of time and money to go tie a big one to a tree the day before the opener, but life seems to deal me different cards.
I use maps, satelite photos, game reports, internet pictures, ect...... to pick where I want to scout with my rifle and tag in hand.
I'm all for scouting with a rifle and tag! Do it all the time.
If all goes well in the draw, I'll be scouting Wyoming with a rifle and tag. I already have plane tickets to scout Alaska with a rifle and tag.
Maybe I'm just an "*censored*", but this *censored* does ok at filling tags and I have fun at it. If my success in the draw means some other sucker with tons of points goes without a tag, then so be it. :)
I put in for Sheep, moose, goat, elk, and deer every year for units I've never set foot in. :P
-
;D nice one
is that the camera man's left or the *censored*s in the photos left? :sas:
-
Best blues units in Order....
West wenaha
Dayton
Tucannon
East Wenaha
Hope that doesn't help the *censored*s! :lol4:
-
How many of you *censored*s have scouted the Moose, Sheep, and Goat units you've bean putting in for the last 10 years or more? :o :chuckle:
Well BBB, did you take any pictures of the sheep units? I'd like to see some if you got them.
-
Ya it gets old all of the negative comments he just wanted to see some pics. Just like how everyone on here acts like they are the best sportsman and do everything legal. I can guarantee you not everyone is. It like the song "so much cooler online" meaning we are all the best most ethical hunters why we are online.
-
"Apparently I'm the only one who has a hard time with a guy who wants to make his application decision based on photographs of a unit he has never been to. "
why do you care so much about what someone you don't know, will never meet and who's actions will have absolutely zero effect on your life does with his six dollar and fifty cent application? is your life really that boring?
-
Best units in the state is the Margret and Toutle. Tons of 350 class bulls running around in there, you just need to know where to look . ;)
-
good points there chesapeake. i plan on hunting wyoming one of these years for elk as well but will not be making a scouting trip before i go, thats what i use the computer for. call me a lazy sob for not going there to scout before i apply for the draw there i can handle it. anyways, just wanted to see some of the country and see if it fit my style of hunting and it looks like it does from what i saw. thanks to those who posted the pics. also found out that some of you are kinda sensitive when it comes to posting a pic for someone to see of what the country is like there in the blues.
-
What's an *censored* ?? Never heard that one. Is it the new dip*censored* ?? :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Thanks for sharing the pictures. It is already a tough tag to draw and I don't think posting the pictures hurts any. As folks have said before, there are many online mapping applications that will show you the same detail.
Good luck to everybody in the draws especially if you put in for a tag in the blues.
-
i need luck in this year's drawing- I've been putting in since i was 25 years old and now I'm 40...wtf. I've never had the opportunity to turn in a poacher so like most guys with 15 points it's been a long time waiting. I believe that a certain amount of tags should be set aside for guys with 8 or more points, for example 30 to 40% of the total tags. Just a thought for us *censored*s that have been waiting way too long, I was a young buck when i last drew a special permit for elk- *censored* half my life is over now and I won't wait this long again. You guys will have one less person applying for the blues after I finally draw one of the best tags in the state. Good luck this year to all of those who have put in their time and been patient, and yes I am jealous to those who continually draw coveted tags.
-
Guys, i am only trying to help you out here, there are no elk in the blues, save yourself the trouble, dont even apply, you can trust me on this, i live here, no elk ;)
-
I hope your last statement isn't from the future- with the wolves now in the blues it won't take long for the best herd in our state to get decimated. SSS
-
ah the wolves, i will say this, this area is primarily surrounded by communities with a bunch of good ol boys, i believe that the population around here may have a rough time getting a good foothold, it is tough habitat for wolves here. it is rumored that a great number of the wolves that the state says dont live here have radio collars on them, so i guess we will see what happens.
-
God Bless ya! Elk are way more important and impressive than wolves. :twocents:
-
;D nice one
is that the camera man's left or the *censored*s in the photos left? :sas:
We were all *censored*s. That was 2004, and I had two points for elk that year, so as defined earlier in the thread, I was an *censored* (I took the picture, I am not in it). That is CoryTDF on the right, I think he had 2 points that year, so that makes him an *censored* too. The other guy is Tom, he's always been an *censored*...no points required... :chuckle:
The elk are down in the %#@ing hole somewhere on the left. You can here them, but you can't see them. They're all gone now. Put in for the Clockum.
-
this thread was entertaining and irritating at the same time. what it comes down to is, if you wanna help, then help, if you dont, then dont. but dont rag on those who are fine with sharing a couple pictures of the unit.
-
well said zach, and as the *censored* pathfinder 101 stated, no elk left in there, try peaches :dunno:
-
No, no, no, it's apply for the area around Leavenworth. :chuckle:

We didn't draw (you don't have to draw with 2 points to be an *censored*, do you? If so, then only Tom is an *censored*. I have 9 points this year, still waiting...), and actually, we were on a deer hunt. We didn't see any deer, so I guess we were just on one helluva hike. We saw elk, and they were still bugling in mid October, but no deer. Incidentally, that cool-looking ridge that we are standing on, drops into death-hell-bitch-canyon, just out of site. We didn't use a GPS, THOUGHT we knew where we were on the map, and bailed off that f@#*!er into some @#7^ that we weren't planning on. When we figured out where we were, we realized that the ridge had no name, so we named it "*censored* Ridge". And it remains "*censored* Ridge" to this day...
Obviously, we didn't know that when this picture was taken. That's why we are smiling. 'Cause were *censored*es. *censored* *censored*s.
-
pathfinder, that got me rolling! hahaha. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Dumb*censored*, good one, can i use that?
-
sure
-
maybe it should be *censored* ridge, and teh entire blue mountain area just turned into the *censored* elk tags.

Sorry. I have to agree with BBB on some of his points.I do scout the units i put in for the draw. Elk, shhep and goats. By a ghost point for moose because i haven't scouted yet. I moved to the eastside a year ago but still hunted the westside because thats what i know. I have scouted the blues fpr the last two seasons so that is what i put in this year. It helped that i also have a multi-season elk tag. But from previous threads i've read people have gotten on here after they drew a premium tag askingfor help because they don't know the unit. And when they due go down ther a see the area during the hunt they quit early. Guys they scout it and want the tag loose out to someone who wasted the tag.
-
So who gets to determine if the tag was wasted or not??? Because your idea of wasted is different than mine.
I hunt to spend days in the field chasing my game of choice. And to fill the freezer.
And why do people feel a tag is wasted if it is filled with an animal that is smaller than what someone else expects? So f'n what. Hunt and have fun. Quit yur bitchin... And hunt, for the fun of it.

If some one has a ton of points and wants a premium tag who's gonna fault him for putting in for a premium tag ?. if he has two points and wants to burn them on the same unit who cares?. I still buy a lotto ticket , should I not just because of the odds. last year bullbuster drew the riffle rut tag in my area , After finding out he and his partners were good guys i was willing to help out . He ended up shooting a 350 bull in one of our honey holes. the chance of that bull being around next time we draw is slim to none , why not band together to help out.if you want a private hunt club buy one. :twocents:
-
Good point coach. I'm in the same boat. :)

yeah, what he said. :hello:

Besides wasn't it mentioned there are no elk in the Blues :dunno: :dunno: :chuckle:
I still do not see why everyone gets so head up over this stuff..share if you are the sort that likes to share..... and don't share if your not...how hard is that :dunno:
I will not be competing with any of you .....I am not a gambler......buy maybe one lotto ticket every once in a blue moon.....just not my thing
-
Wow, thats some petty country over there!
-
I hunted lick creek for years found some of the best areas for elk were the spots that people drove by to get to the canyons all the time last year i hunted down there got pissed off because opening morning all i found was big branch antlered bulls could of slapped a big 6x6 on the butt he was so close to me just walking down the trail in front off me saw 7 nice bulls that morning one spike couldn't get a shot at him could have all the big bulls. hunted off pink-um mud flats count shoot around the tail bone.
-
I don't care about how many points you have when you draw the tag. What the problem is there have been people who draw these tags that don't know what the country is like and give up after a couple days because its to rough. When you get drawn you need to scout it for yourself. I have ran into a few guys from the westside scouting the blues. I don't have a problem helping these guys out. At least they have put sometime in,
-
Get drawn first then go scout. Why waste a bunch of time scouting a unit, that the odds are, you will never get drawn for in your life anyways. I have never flown or driven to Arizona,Wyoming,Colorado,Montana or others places that I have put in for to scout without getting drawn, but I have looked at many beautiful pictures and have dreamed many times of these areas. I think that most of us are like this and I know that if Ridgefire gets drawn for one these areas he will work harder and scout harder than most people. I know this because he is my brother and he is a bad news bowhunter.
-
....."Why waste a bunch of time scouting a unit"
seriously? not sure that I've ever wasted time scouting.
-
great point BLUEBULLS, even with no elk in the area, scouting is always a good time
-
Scouting is part of the expierence become one with the land grasshopper plus it's an excuse to get out of the house for a few days
-
plus looking at those pictures i would live out there
-
Last time I checked this was a Washington hunting forum. And the topic had to deal with Dayton and Lick Creek.
-
no :jacked: long time ago.
-
great point BLUEBULLS, even with no elk in the area, scouting is always a good time

scenery... so they have hot chicks in those hills :dunno: :dunno:
-
thats what i am lookin for, better chance of hot chicks than elk :dunno:
-
Oh GREAT! We're screwed. Now there are rumors of elk AND hot chicks running around in the Blues... I'm NEVER gonna draw a f#@!ing tag! :bash: :bash: :bash:

didnt say it was a good chance just said it was betterm i mean one lotteries chances are better than another, doesnt mean it is good odds :dunno:
-
ok so do I have this right.....there are no elk in the Blues but there are *censored*s and a chance of hot chicks :dunno: :dunno: that is one strange piece of wilderness.....do you know I saw bison in the blues once...oh and free ranging cattle in the middle of the dang road once as well....kid saw a turkey also on the side of the road once....if you are hunting it seems the main highway is a good place to be ;)
-
that sounds like good advice
-
When you draw a tag for the Tucannon or Wenaha East or West, I can show you where the 2 bulls are. Actually there might be more than 2 even after taking some nice bulls last year. Really need help here killing some bear.

I waited until the drawing was closed to post. The wolves may change our unit by next year. The late snows has kept us off the top, anxious to get the cameras out and get started scouting. Should have good access after this weekend.

I give it 5 years before the wolves really take over the units down there. But they are coming for sure. I saw it first hand in the unit I hunt in Idaho. It can go from so good to so bad very quickly. And I just dont think the WDFW will manage the wolves right away.
-
good point mtcook, i have to thank you for waiting on the post, but i think we have to dump the thread now, so nobady gets any ideas for next year
-
OK, this has gotten way out of hand, so since there are so many conflicting messages on here, I am going to present imperical photographic evidence that there are no elk left in the Blue Mountains. I hope this clears everything up....
-
if that isn't proof i dont know what is, we tried to tell you guys
-
I saw some of those same signs last week. Serious looking guys that enjoy a good hike.
mtncook

Start now by going to dayton, get a map, have a good pair of hiking boots, binoculars, and lots of water because there is a lot of country to cover.

the right direction would be east, then straight down and then straight up.
