Alright you got it....summer is comming and i know im not the only one thinking about getting a boat....stealhead, salmon, trout, bass, whatever!
Im thinking of maybe getting a nice 19ft jetsled....?
show off or tell off your fish slaying chariot and tell us why its a good boat....
more pictures the better......
and all you with the smaller or less expensive boats can show off to....nothing to be embarressed about...you still catching fish just like the rest of those wine taste drinking boats(aka expensive boats), lol.........
SO LETS SEE THEM!!!!!!

20' North River Sportster with the 240 HP Sportjet. Have ran stuff as small as the Satsop and have had it 14 miles out of Westport.

21'6" NorthRiver CommanderX, 6.0L, Hami 212
Both boat and trailer polished by hand to a mirror finish :bash:
-
and somebody said realestate was a better investment than a boat.
-
Here is Idabooner and his craft. Anybigger though and it wouldn't be a "Portaboat". Throwing one of those North Rivers over your shuld could be hazardous to your health.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fidaboat.jpg&hash=97f4909374582abb2cc65594a0d1b8d8031a77fb)

Nice tub Antlershed, Ive had mine in as little as "NO" water :chuckle:
and also 80 miles up the inside passage to Rivers Inlet. Theres nothing like doing 50mph+ in less than 4" or river water though ;)
-
Dude, thats what 4 wheelers are for. :)
I wish I took a picture of the boat I saw at tehsportsman show that I wanted. You'll see why I want to upgrade.
Coasthunter said no size restrictions, so here is my boat. Its the biggest I've got now since I sold my 16 foot bayliner. :( I have caught a few fish out of it though.

I have (sorry me and my wife have) a 2004 north river commander 21 ft. I thought it was a pretty nice boat until i saw huntnphool's, mine only has the 5.7 liter and its not polished to a mirror finish. I bought it from a friend about 8 months ago and have salmon fished with it in the puget sound and took it on a trip to the san juans and thats about it. I know the thing is made for running rivers and i've done it a few times with the previous owner but my balls have'nt got big enough yet to give that a try. Heading to rufus woods this weekend so maybe i can fill the cooler with monster trout
-
Very nice as well Skinzner, I like the lime graphics. Anytime you want to learn the river running just give me a shout, we can take yours or mine or both, and anyone else that just wants to go for a ride ;)
-
I might have to take you up on that one of these days

Count me in phool. I'll just sit in the corner, drink beers and take pictures...

Got a couple others but one is too big to fish for anything but bottomfish and the other is the tender to the other.
If I wasnt building a house, I'd be getting a good sled. Maybe in 2010?
-
Yeah, show off. We need a thread for Polar bears boats alone. :)
-
Nothin fancy, super stable and can launch in some pretty shallow water.
-
Hey now Bone! ;) I cant help if I'm a boat whore! :dunno: I need 2 more fishing boats for salmon. The wife wants to sell the farm when the kids are done with school and buy a big boat to live on. Sounds good to me, but I dont know if I can give up my cows and shooting coyotes from my barn. I guess that I could switch to shooting seals, eh?
-
"Count me in phool. I'll just sit in the corner, drink beers and take pictures..."
Your in Pope, will have you bring the waiver form for everyone to sign :chuckle:
-
"I guess that I could switch to shooting seals, eh?"
If your serious I'll make your down payment ;)
-
To Huntinphool or anybody else who cares to chime in what kind of polish do you like to use on a aluminum boat. I've been using a 3M paste that seems to ok but if there's something better & definetly easier I'm all ears.
-
Count me in phool. I'll just sit in the corner, drink beers and take pictures...
I was thinking the same thing ... me and Pope are going to get along good hey Rob?
-
ZEPS..........
yeah and you know you can count me in phool!
-
i don't have any pics handy but i have a 16' lavro lazy drifter driftboat. it has no horsepower...all man power and river power is all it takes. it's been down a few rivers and a few overnighters, been on a few lakes too. plenty of fish have been caught out of it.
i just sold my 20' bluewater sadly, but there will be another powerboat in my future, likely it will have a pump and be something like the others on here...
nice toys, gang.
-
Now this boat was my hunting/fishing machine, so sad I sold it before leaving the north. Every year it would start off with Bear blood to begin the season in late May, then Kenai River kings, to dip netting Reds, then to running northern glacier rivers for Silvers and finally end up with either Moose, Caribou or another bear to make certain there was cleaning to do before storage for the winter. 18 foot welded sled, with tunnel, 50hp Honda with jet (Kenai Legal), literaly could run 4" of water and lauch -well, where I felt like.... Not fast.... but soooooo shallow.....and to the places nobody could go, except for the Airboats. Wish I still had it, here it would be the ideal boat for the rivers, but would change out the motor for a 90hp E-Tec... since there isn't any motor restrictions.
Don't feel sorry for me, I did up grade to a 23' Thunderjet with 375hp out the Hamilton 212 with 3/4 hard top and all the extras goodies........ Huntnphool, I'm in and ready to run.....
-
is a hewescraft River runner jet sled a good boat?
-
Depends on how much money you have.

Hey All, as far as I'm concerned the more the merrier.
50Cal, I started by sanding the boat with 150 grit, then 200, then 600 and then a liquid with a buffer. The liquid made one hell of a mess on the floor though. Now I use jewelers rouge with a buffing wheel attached to a Makita buffer. It runs somewhere in the 3000-4000rpm range. It takes my brother and I about an hour to tag team the boat and get it done, this includes pulling it off the trailer to get the area behind the bunk rails and putting it back on the trailer. We end up completely black when we are done but it sure looks nice.
-
Depends on how much money you have.
it would be a used Boat....in good shape, nothing mechanically bad. looks great from what little i have seen....something like a 98' or 99'....i found one that a gentleman might be wanting to sell for 12K. 19ft comes with a 175 sportjet. wonder what the gas mileage would be, lol...guess he doesnt use it as much as his wife thought he was going to so she is telling him to get rid of it. Now i guess is what he said :chuckle:.....sucks for him but good for whoever buys it.....just thought i would ask because it sounds like a really nice boat, for a price range that i could afford.....thought it would be great for the neah bay area and for the columbia river....thinking alot of stealhead, salmon, sturgeon fishing could be done from it and i need something that i can do all that in and then take people sking and tubing with. i really want something that i can just take to a park and beech if i need to and not really worry about damaging it.....and really 19 feet you could put a duck blind on this style of boat and with a 7 person compasity and a 4inch draft? hum possabilities....but im just looking anyways....but i like the style of boat
-
Damn, Cohoho is hard core. Nice chrome and bear.
I can return the favor phool and m-ray, it's just I don't have a river boat and I do love running rivers. I'll take you guys on a prawning trip you'll never forget. I guarantee limits but only one rule...no gps's allowed. Oh, throw in your halibut rods also... ;)
-
I'm not sure how much fuel the 175 sportjet sucks, but I know how much the 240 does, and its quite a bit. :)
A river run sounds like a pretty cool idea. I would be in (with boat) if it was a day I could make it.
-
Jay- What use is the boat going to get, meaning primarily running what, Rivers, Bays, Lakes, your price range, ease of maintenance, etc... I'm pretty knowledgeable about what works in skinny shallow water and have tried darn near every boat made up north. If your running rivers only and want performance, i.e. go where other can't, I would suggest a flat bottom john stle, but stay away from Rough Neck and several other john boats (green) they aren't made to the same specification, there good boats and not meaning to offend anyone that owns one, but they were designed for props in the south, the tunnels they put on the models like the 1650 TN doesn't work, unless you want to run high hp to get it flat and on step quickly. It was meant to raise the prop out of the weeds. The Alumaweld skiff is great but lacks great turning abilities. The best designed smaller river boat are the 18' ATEC or Wooldridge 17' Alaskan, or even Alaskan !! in the larger model 20-23, etc.. For motor performance you cannot beat the E-Tec period for power and weight ratio. I had a 90hp Honda before putting on the 50hp for Kenai legal requirements and my buddy same boat set-up with 90 hp E-Tec, literally Night and Day, that thing was like a raped ape on steriods.... With that set-up out of the water was almost instant with no back drop. Boat sat flat and ran flat... The idea is to get as much displacement under the boat and the shallow tunnel with the right degree hull, (not truely flat), but almost, creates the proper flow of water to the jet pump and add power and personal abilities to just go, trial and error is critical here.... The ribs on the bottom are of .125 or better depending upon model, .160 and .190 like the big boats is just too darn heavy to get off sand bars and other items. I have shaved two ribs all the way through running Glacier rivers over the past few years, simple solution, weld it shut and add another tube over top to add extra strentgh.. Unless your running an Big Airboat, you won't go shallower... Trust me, have seen all sorts of Big inboards try to go where I did, thank goodness most had a winch to get off the rapids. Several places the Air boat guys came up and asked how the heck did you get that boat up here. Even the well aclaimed Extreme Shallow couldn't go the distance.. As much as I love my new boat, I can't go to the places that I used to and probably will get another one day, especially when I return up north. Big water your own your own, absoultely no experiance there, except for jumping on with friends and charters....
-
m-ray, it's just I don't have a river boat and I do love running rivers.
Me too Pope, I used to get out on my Uncle's sled all the time but now I only have a drift boat (which I am considering selling) and it's kinda hard to get back up stream with much speed! ;)
-
When we going? and what river? Seems like in the very near future is perfect, cause it doesn't conflict major seasons, Does it? Hey make it a springer run? Any thoughts? Sturgeon? Got room for a couple folks if needing.... Mike
-
I'm always available sometimes. :) Next weekend?
-
Right on Pope, I can always use another prawn location ;) I took some friends last year, here is one of our pulls. Like you, limits are not a problem.
Coho, lets make some springer plans, the rules just came out a couple days ago, I will be hitting Cathlamet several times before it closes down, looks like its only open a couple weeks this year below I-5 >:( http://wdfw.wa.gov/do/newreal/release.php?id=feb1508a
-
Here's my baby. 18'6" North River Seahawk, I'm all about halibut, salmon and bottom fish from Neah Bay, Vancouver Island and Puget Sound.
-
Did the first run of the year today with Bearhunter59 on Lake Sawyer to get out the cob webs and burn remaining stored and treated fuel, ready to go.... And ready for any water, well almost.... Check out the deer we saw along the shore today... And finally a pic of my boat that is itching for some salmon or strugeon....
-
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, lets hit a river soon sounds like lots are willing to go help pull us off a sand bar :chuckle:
-
I'll bring the tow rope....... Never know. Does anyone use parachutes here for getting off the bars....? Used them before, but on smaller boats and my buddies airboat when the winch cable didn't reach..... This boat, probably will ease into the battle scars...
-
So i want a sled style boat....something with a reletively shallow draft.........
I Want to fish in areas like Neah bay for salmon, and still be able to deepsea fish and halibut fish, and throw a couple crabpots off the side while im doing that ......
I want to fish at the Columbia river dams and troll for stealhead and do some whitewater sturgeon fishing.......
I want to Fish hog lines on the columbia for salmon.....
I want to fish for bass in the yakima and other shallow lakes by cruising a ways up it and then floating down it or by being able to puddle back into holes and fish them.......
I want to be able to troll so slow that i can catch lake trout in My back yard.........
I WANT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE PEOPLE KNEE BOARDING AND TUBING...
I just really want a all-around good boat!
something used around the 17 to 19 ft range....Aluminum....Heavy duty, very shallow draft, Fit 4+ people comfortably and cost no more than 12-14K.
I have seen several but cant quite put my finger on the exact boat that i want.....
ANY IDEAS?
-
The only problem is that with the shallow draft for the rivers you sacrifice ride out in the rougher water. I'll stick with my 25 ft. sportfisher for the fishing that I do in the ocean. I'll use the drift boat for the rivers when or if I ever get a chance to get out.

ANY IDEAS?

Hey coho, I am planning on getting a boat in the next couple of months and am looking for your opinion. I will be both fishing and hunting out of it and have been looking at the smokercraft 1660 sportsman with a 90hp yamaha tiller jet. I live in the Tri Cities and hope to use the boat for fishing and hunting on the Yakima and Columbia rivers. This boat does not have the tunnel hull but I have told by the salesman that this boat can run shallow. I don't trust any salesmen and I do trust your opinion. Thank you.
-
Nootka last year in the Sandyman.
-
Brand new day we picked up.
-
Loydo nailed a 31# in Joe's Tiderunner 18'
-
A fat 25# 5 miles out off Nootka in '06.
-
Kbyers- The smokercraft is a ok boat, not the greatest for shallow river waters though. Reason is the design, thin hull boat, I think .090, it is very similar to the rough neck. Check out the keel, it sticks too low below the boat, first thing to hit everything, all the time.... The transom is also weak, it is thin metal over wood, not a solid welded foundation when you'll have your jet motor up higher on a transom riser. The boat just doesn't get on step without HP and it normally rides really weird in the water, more front end up, even when you load weight in the front, the back in low in the water. It is made for Props and for the swamps, contrary to what the dealerships have to say. The 90 tiller jet is great motor, yamaha, Honda, it doesn't matter, but if you want to run like a raped ape, you can't beat the E-Tec for all out performance Period... I know that first hand.... You might want to run a bit longer of a boat, like 18 ft, with that motor, it will give you more planning surface and make life easier all together when trying to get on step in shallow water and will be a smooth riding boat, plus have abit extra room for extra dead animals. Check out the transom angle also, it makes a huge difference straight versus angled, the motor needs to sit straight and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the bottom of the boat, even with the hull for best performance. The back of the foot of the jet should sit slightly below to get the best flow of water, most other places it starts to cavitate and not perform to full capacity. I am personally a shallow tunnel guy for river boats, keeps all of the motor up from trouble and as long as the boat is floating you can start it without too much fear of sucking everything off the bottom at idle. I will admit, I don't know the rivers here, but if shallow is what you want, it is the best option. I could literally run my old ATEC boat up 3"-4" on step and off step too. The G-3 is good boat, comes in a tunnel also. Along with ATEC but I don't know if you can get an ATEC around here. What ever you do, make certain who ever rigs it, they know how to set the jet up. I like the motors without trim and tilt, you don't need it if it is set up right in the beginning, plus it is cheaper and less weight. A good resource for making it sit right is the Wooldridge web site, heck they almost invented the jet system.... Now the down side to a nice shallow running jet, it will ride like crap on big choppy water, lakes etc.....
-
"Smokercraft has a weak hull"
I owned a 16' Tracer, bought brand new, first time out the hull actually partially collapsed in front. I'm with COHOHO -I DO NOT recommend these boats for anything but small lakes....
-
Well thanks for the input. I looked at the Wooldridge Alaskan. Looks like a great boat. I understand that a boat like that will ride like crap in rough water, but will it be dangerous if a storm comes up or will it just beat the hell out of me. I can handle a rough ride, but I still want to be safe if I venture out onto bigger water. Thanks again for the input.

I don't know what your budget is, but some good lower cost model's for big water are: Alumaweld Intruder 18-20', Hewescraft Searunner 18-20', Northriver Seahawk 18-20', Silver Streak boats out of BC, Duckworth 18-20' Advantage.
-
I got the 20' Intruder.....for my needs and wants gotta be the best ALL around boat. Anytime you spend that kinda money on something you want to be able to use it year-round.

Amen to that! I should be living on my boat!
-
Alumaweld also has the new Blackhawk that looks like a pretty good boat in 18-20'.
-
I like your style DMAN
-
Kbers- Again goes back to what the main purpose of the boat is, not all are perfect in any way, all around boat, as I currently have, you sacrifice in other areas. The orginal reply was thinking you wanted to run shallow, well the Wooldridge can be tough to beat period, but there is trade offs, it will be safe on the bigger water but you will feel like your getting slapped by a 1000lb man on every breaker. I assumed, you wouldn't be utilizing it in the Big water?
My dream scenio is four boats, one shallow running river jet, One recreational boat (Water Skiing) and one big ass ocean boat and of course an Airboat with a 500 hp motor to push up any river or land bridge in AK (a pic of a friends Airboat in Fairbanks). Notice the crane system!!!!!!! to lift the Moose right into the boat.... He also uses it in the winter to groom some snow mobile trails and runs the iced over rivers during break up.
Or a multipurpose boat, like Dman stated.
-
Thats Cool!
-
wow, how does the air boat ride with a big old moose in it? You assumed right, it will mostly be used in shallow rivers, with some runs across open water to get to the big bass, or a secret duck blind. Thank you for all of your advise, I have been talking to Rob at Wooldridge in Seattle, I think that I am going to go with the 17 foot Alaskan, with the Etec 115hp. Now my only choice in the center consol or the forward windshield. Again thank you for the advise.
-
Get the windshield, you'll appreciate it on those cold mornings. Man a 115 E-Tec, that things will out right fly... When I see the blur, I will know which boat just past me... Man all this talk has really gotten me into the mood to run some rivers, anyone up?
-
If you guys don't mind, I would love to make a trip over to the West side and go out on the rivers with you. The only river that I have been out on over there is the Skagit and that was only below Mt Vernon. I am always up for learning a new river.
-
I loved those airboats...12 months of the year if ya wanted too.
-
Sisu, Where did you live up there, interior/Town, in Los Anchorage or the Valley of Traffic? Just curious, no reason why. The picture above were of his Fairbanks boat, he'd use it as a way into Minto Flats for Moose and shoot plenty to prove his boat was the best option going. I had a pretty good gig starting to be lined up within two years before moving here. Was in the process of becoming a Transporter for hunting and fishing, transporting via rivers utilizing a big custom airboat form Leonard up in Houston. 550HP out of a 502 motor. Boat was 22 foot could hold the moon and still get on step nicley without causing Hurricane force winds off the back, though I wouldn't recommend standing behiond it to check. Figured I could drop folks off cheaper than A/C and still get to hunt in isolated areas while paying the boat off. Did a decent amount of travel via Air Boats, man they would go in the places I could only dream of in my shallow jet, and return without new holes, dings and dents on the bottom. There are not the typical Florida boat for sure. Did you ever run Twenty Mile or Portage river, my two favorite rivers there, nobody else around ever, great Silvers in the late Fall. Don't even know if anything like this would be legal anywhere here? Or where you could utilize it? The weight they could hold was up to the driver, I have seen three Moose and three guys with gear for a week and still pushing along up the Yukon like a freight train... Then pulling out of the water and loading up on to the trailer without backing the truck to the water.... Now thats cool....
-
"If you guys don't mind, I would love to make a trip over to the West side and go out on the rivers with you."
Well get your a$$ over here, I'm always ready to hit a river, whether its fishing or just scenic, lets get something going guys. Someone take the bull by the horns and put some dates out there. Lets remember though that the springer fishing below I-5 is only 2 weeks long this year so try not to use the 24th-4th. I will be in Vegas next weekend until Tuesday but am up for any other time. It would be fun to get a couple other boats out too.
-
If it was not during Springer season (below I-5), then I would try my hardest to make it with boat.
-
I'm leaving at 4:00am to spend a couple days down on the Cowlitz. Pump.....ya, you could say that! :) Next time I'll get down South will be the weekend of the 28th for a couple days around Cathlamet. If fishins' good I'll come back for the last three days Wednesday thru Friday. Always got another spot on the boat.....
-
Sisu, Where did you live up there, interior/Town, in Los Anchorage or the Valley of Traffic? Just curious, no reason why.
We were from the Mat-Su Valley. If you drove to Willow you drove right by my house which was on the left side of the Parks Highway about 1/2 mile from the "old" turn off from the Glenn and Parks intersection. We lived in that little subdivision of 8 houses in the small valley that has a view of Pioneer Peak, but lost the view of Hatchers Pass because of the new road construction.
If your buddy lived in Fairbanks a long time he probably knows or of the Sundberg family and the Talvi family. The former is a relative and the latter is a long time family friend.
We used to fish the Willow, Little Willow, Su, Lake Creek, Yetna, Little Su, etc. We had a 20 Monark with a 115 Merc jet. Great times until some low life stole the boat and motor.
I miss fishing season real bad, but I need to work and I refuse to work in the winter and fall so summer and spring employment are a necessary evil other wise I'd be up there with our new boat and fish for about 2 months.
BTW the Valley was not the Valley of Traffic when I was there but since 2003 it has become a nightmare that I am real glad to have left. If I moved back it would either be in Soldovia or Delta.
-
My grandfather used to fish the Yenta every year, got to know a lodge owner well enough I thought about working up there for a Summer and playing in the Alaska baseball leagues, wish I had now
