Title: sea duck decoys
Post by: Dustin07 on May 10, 2010, 02:43:17 PM
what are you guys using for sea duck decoys? new or repaints? if new what brand?

I want to make up some scoters and harlis, but possibly some old squaws too.

Mainly re-paints.  Old mallarded weighted keel decoys.  They work good.  There are also outfits where you can buy them new if your up for spending $80+ per dozen.  I went with old ones as they get shot up pretty good at times.

That's probably a good idea. I have around 20 dozen and a good 10 doz or so are just old mallards, widgeons, pins, etc that I never use, so I could paint them up and longline them for a season.

Still, $80/doz is a heck of a lot cheaper than the UREaducks. I'm not sure I like those. The foamer idea is good, but the way they attach the long line is pretty weak I think.

Who do you recommend in terms of sea duck decoy manufacturers at that $80 range? maybe I'll shop and buy just one dozen nice pair this year to mix with repaints or something.

Dustin07, don't spend big bucks on scoter decoys. I am fairly new at sea duckin and last year the white wings were like kamikaze planes coming into my three dozen crappy old mallard decoys that I rattle canned black. My partner and I even scored on a pair of Harlie's! The blacks and surfies were happy to accommodate us as well! Good luck, let me know if you need some company :mgun:

Definitely my friend! I make a lot of solo trips myself and either try to meet up with someone off the forums, or have gotten lucky and hunted with people I met in the field. Sea Duckin' will be no different. I can't wait.

would love to hear more about your harli experience. I saw one  that buzzed me by about 15ft. stupid me didn't plan to be in the salt that day and hadn't bought my seaduck card yet. let him go, and didn't see another that season.

I do not have a boat.  I have a dog and a couple dozen decoys I've been meaning to paint.  I haven't gotten into sea duck hunting because I lack a boat, but am interested in starting.

As for the decoys - check out quack decoy. Made up in the northeast by a nice guy whose name I can't recall. His product has worked great for me over the years. A little pricey, but they'll take shot after shot & somehow stay afloat. Sea duckin is easy boys. Find the birds, and it really won't matter how nice you dec's are...

Dustin,

I have another 5-6 doz deeks that need repainted as well perhaps I will give them an all black and a pinch of white and we can use your boat to tow my two layouts out and have a blast.  Looking forward to this season.
