Title: MY NEW BOW!!!
Post by: MasterMisser on May 13, 2010, 01:07:20 PM
So after many conversations with the wife  :bash:, she has finally agreed to let me spend the money and get a new bow  :IBCOOL:. It all started last year when I went to Spokane Valley Archery, and shot the Hoyt Alpha Max... I loved it! But then RileyTDF came up a few weeks ago with one of the new Strothers bows. I had to work the morning they went Turkey hunting so I didn’t get a chance to shoot it. But never the less I thought it was gorgeous! The wife and I planned a trip down to Walla Walla last weekend, and I figured it would be a great opportunity to shoot the Strothers SR-71. But being me... I was too impatient! So I called up Josh at SVA and wanted his professional opinion of the new Strothers bows. He basically told me that they are a very good bow. But he encouraged me to come in and shoot a bunch of bows to see which one felt the best. So last Friday I left work early, rounded up the girls, and headed down to SVA.

When I got there Josh had 5 bows set up at 29" and 70lbs. Here are the bows. Strothers Inspire, Hoyt Maxxis 31, Bowtech Destroyer, Mathews Z7, and the Mathews Monster 7. The first bow I went to was the Strothers. I immediately liked the way it felt. It had good balance and the grip felt great! I shot 9 arrows through the Strothers bow. Over all I thought it was a nice bow. But my biggest problem with it was I felt like I was pulling a semi up hill. The rollover was much greater than I wanted in a bow. The second bow I Grabbed was the Mathews Z7. Followed by the Monster 7. They both were fast, and smooth. There was just one problem. Both bows were too bulky for my liking. I could tell they were built great and very solid but I just couldn't see myself packing either of these heavy, bulky bows into the woods.

The Fourth bow I grabbed was the Hoyt Maxxis 31. I had Extremely high expectations for this bow. With 3 of my close friends shooting Hoyt’s, plus with my previous experience shooting the Alpha Max I knew this would be a contender. After the first arrow, I was AMAZED! It had an amazingly smooth draw. The let off was perfect, and it felt great in my hand. I didn’t want to set it down!!! There was one down fall to the Hoyt. I just wish I could get a little more speed. The IBO rating is 323 @ 70lbs with a draw length of 30” It was a bit slower than I wanted.

The Bowtech Destroyer was my least favorite. I liked the hay it felt, and it seemed to be a very smooth bow, but the let off was far too aggressive for my liking. With the first arrow I drew I had made a small grip adjustment and the bow started to cycle immediately. For me this was a deal breaker. I set this bow down and moved on!

After shooting all 5 bows inside, I narrowed it down to 2 bows. The Hoyt Maxxis 31 and the Mathews Monster 7. At this time my daughter and wife were getting a little restless inside so we decided to take it outside. Having the slight breeze at my back and the Hoyt Maxxis in my hand. I drew back with my eyes closed. Trying to mentally pick the bow apart threw each phase of the shot. Again I was truly impressed. As I opened my eyes and set into position I felt relaxed and egger to let the arrow fly. With a slight touch on the Scott's release, the arrow was down range! WOW… I love this bow!

I decided I needed to be fair to the Mathews Monster 7. I alternated between both bows for about 60 arrows. In my opinion I think both are at the top of the class. The deciding factor came down to the bulkiness of the bows. With that being said I ended up choosing the Hoyt Maxxis 31 Blacked out.

Over the weekend I had thought about my decision constantly. I was questioning my decision because the Hoyt was a bit slower in speed. So on Tuesday I called and had Josh order an 80lb bow instead of the 70lb we had talked about. I figured I could pick up some speed if a used a shorter arrow with a 400 spine. The bow is currently on order and hopefully being built as I write this. I can’t wait! I will be posting pictures to follow!

Accompanying the Hoyt Maxxis 31 will be a set of Winners Choice strings in solid black, an HHA single pin sight, Trophy Takers full containment Smack Down fall away rest, Fuse Carbon Connexion stabilizer, and a Fuse Satori 2 Piece quiver.

That is awesome. I'm sure you are excited.

On the speed pickup - if you go to a 400 spine arrow with 70-80# draw weight, you're lookin at a max arrow length of 26" with 100 grn tips. How are you going to manage that with a 29" draw? Just curious.

I know its border line! but i want the SPEED. Plus I'm shooting a 70lb Martin with the 29' draw lenght and my arrows are 27" with nock and field point. They are short! I think a big part of it is the fall away rest im using. It allows me to be able to pick up an extra inch or inch and a half...

Right on. I've heard of guys gaining up to 2 1/2" with drop aways but I don't get that much out mine (QAD HD). I have a 28" draw and 27" arrows are cuttin it close enough for me. It did allow me to go to a 400 spine though  ;)

Enjoy your new bow. Can't wait to hear how it's grouping for you.

The maxxis stikes again! I've had my 35 since janusry and I still can't set it down. Speed aint everything in my book but accuracy is.

Congrats !  New bows are always fun and exciting. Hope your tuning & getting set up goes well. I also put a Trophy taker on my new z7 and love it. I ditched the whisker biscuit after I never achieved long range accuracy with it on my last bow. Probably my form or ?.  The trophy taker has been sweet. Good luck & let us know how it goes . Mike

I like Dan Evans products ( Trophy Taker) ... He does a good job! I took my whisker biscuit of my Martin 2 years ago and switched to the full containment FA and have no regrets!!!

Well its done... Paid for... Man that hurt the ole check book! :o I got the final date from Josh at SVA. It will be here on the 25th. My arrows are fletched and everything is in but the bow... I cant wait!

I love my Alpha Max that I got last year. Sometimes the IBO speed advertised isn't the whole story. I also think that once you get going too fast it makes tuning a hassle. Just my :twocents:

Its In!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got the call last Friday from Josh at SVA. As you can imagine I bolted out of work and made my way to the shop. As i was heading down I90, doing 80 in a 60 by the way. I thought watch I'm gonna get a ticket!!! So I slowed down. But 6 blocks away from the shop I was once again doing 65 in a 35! I looked up and there was a sheriff at the intersection! O SH*T was my first thought! lol So as you can imagine, he pulled in behind me and his first words were... "Do you know how fast you were going?!" All I could come up with was... NO CLUE! PROBABLY FAST!  :bash: As those words came out of my mouth I caught a glimpse of a grin on his face  :chuckle:. He preceded to ask me for my license and reg, and then asked me why i was going so fast! I told him I ordered a new bow 2 weeks earlier and it had just come in... He asked me what kind? I told him it was a Hoyt and he said good man!  :IBCOOL: I was relieved! I knew I was getting out of this one!  :IBCOOL:. I guess the moral to this story is... DRIVE FAST BE HONEST AND PRAY! Anyways I haven't been able to get any pics up yet because I have spent every spare min shooting. I did chrono it yesterday and with the bow maxed out the draw weight it 84lbs, with a 29" draw length and a 387 grn arrow it chronoed at 321.5fps... Not to shabby! I will try to get some pics up in the next day or two...

So you not only need speed in your bow, but driving as well :dunno: Hope you are around long enough to get some use out of the bow.

That's cool, but if you plan to hunt in WA with that you will be trying to talk your way out of another ticket :yike:

You need a 504 grain arrow for hunting in Washington at 84lbs. Your not even gonna hit 300 at 504gr.  :bash:

My Moster 7 set at 62lbs 30in draw shoots 300 fps with a 408gr arrow.  :IBCOOL:

yep that is the law, and that bow won't touch 300fps with a 504 grain arrow if you are going to be legal  just food for thought
