Title: Newly assigned Washington soldier.
Post by: Soldier5 on May 16, 2010, 12:59:40 PM: I'm getting stationed at Fort Lewis and was just wondering if anyone had any advice or pointers on where I could hunt either on-post or the surrounding areas. I'm from Southern Oregon so I'm familiar with the west coast hunting style but I have no clue when it comes to Washington. I will be arriving to Washington in August so I should be able to hunt this season. Any advice or pointers on any bow hunting opportunities would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Post by: shorthair15 on May 16, 2010, 02:33:26 PM: i shot my first blactail buck on the base it was a 3 pt blacktail while i was on active duty they have different units on the base for deer hunting. ive even seen a few black bear taken on the base. they have different areas to hunt on different days you use to have to register the day before there are quite a few deer and grouse and yotes too. hope this helps i spent 10 yrs. in the active before i got out in 1999. hope this helps thanks for your service.

Grew up in Lake Side (Between Coos Bay and Winchester Bay). Sister is down in Coquille.
First bit, KEEP YOUR OREGON RESIDENCE! I know some REAL good roosy country close by (within 1.5 hrs)I'll PM you some stuff to start looking up....

As far as on post... Well... My wife, Bosses wife, and I all took 4x4 w/ eyeguard or better blackies this yr... The bosses kid missed a whopper as well...

Saw a few others in the heavy 3x or smaller range.. They are there, but get poached A BUNCH. Keep to the thick stuff... I'll PM you a few decent training areas to start looking... Forget about the 100yrd clearcut special on post, youll be lucky to see a full head let alone full animal....

Local Elk, don't mess with the B.S. around here.... They got some whoppers locally, but they travel far, and pressure is stupid bad... I'll PM you yet again for some smaller herd info that usually presents thinning opportunities....
