Title: Anybody here using the 6.5 Grendel in an AR platform?
Post by: River on May 26, 2010, 11:46:34 PM
Anybody here that is really using the 6.5 Grendel in an AR platform?
If so, how would you contrast that with the 5.56 (.223)?  And what/where are you doing for ammo?
Interested in doing this now.  Thanks.

I settled in on the 6.8 SPC II for my build.  The grendel does shoot flatter for a bit longer... but the 6.8 is the heavier hitter and is taking deer, large pigs, even black bear.  The difference in available ammo was also a big factor in my decision to go with the 6.8.  Barnes has a new projectile, designed specifically for the 6.8 that will effectively open to speeds as slow as 1600fps... making it an affective hunting round to 450yds with muzzle velocities pushing the 3000fps mark.  The grendel appears (to me) to be more of a bench shooting caliber.

i thought about building one but decided to buy a r-25 instead and i bought the 7mm-08 my cousin bought the 308 win and they make a 243 i love mine. they are a bit diffrent and the gun will be a bit more beefier for the bigger round but should be a sweet mid sized deer killing machine i bought mine for all my predator calling except bear.

My next build will be the 6.5 Grendel as it has much better long range and down range efficiency over the 6.8 round. The main problem with the 68 is the longer casing which prohibits the use of long bullets in the AR15 magazine. The Grendel uses a much shorter case and therefore allows the use of a much greater BC available with 120ish grain 6.5 bullets.

I'm not knocking the 6.8, I have two, and have built several, I just killed 2 coyotes the other day with one, but still there is no question of the long range superiority of the 6.5 bullets. It all depends on what your game is I suppose. I can shoot out to 600 yards in my back yard any day all day and I laugh when I read that someone is shooting at deer sized game with a 6.8 at 600 yards, well, it just ain't there guys. The case can't hold enough powder to reliably and consistently kill deer at those distances, I certainly doubt the 6.5 Grendel can do it either.

The Grendel makes a very fine hunting cartridge it is just as good in the field as the 6.8 and much better on the bench. We have found the 6.8 SPC to be very effective on coyotes out to 300 yards using the 110 VMax bullets, I'm not convinced I would shoot at a large buck at that distance however. Maybe with the new Barnes
bullets it would be adequate though, I have yet to test them.

Ive been looking at a 6.5 for a while now and Im at a cross road on it. I can get a upper for $400 and it has great ballistics but Ive been looking at the 25wssm to which is another story. The 6.5 would be a great mid range deer round and it stays accurate to 1000yds.

Why not just do both when you can afford them. I shoot the 243WSSM AR15 and I love it, it kills with real authority way out there and would only walk away from it if I were to step up to the 25WSSM. I am only intrigued by the 6.5 G as I don't have one, that could change once I have some trigger time with one. I do know that the 243WSSM flat works very, very well.
