Title: Non-Typicals!
Post by: popeshawnpaul on February 27, 2008, 11:41:35 PM
Ok, we've done barely legal, 3 pointers, 5 pointers, etc.  Now lets post some non-typial bucks.  Not a 4 pointer with a cheater.  I mean a real non-typical.  This was one I shot a few years back and there are at least 18 points on this buck that I believe will be more than an inch.  A couple are obstructed but if you look close the rest are there.

No, unfortunately it's not a WA buck.

I only know of one place where there are huge mulies in WA.  Back in college when I was studying for my degree in wildlife biology we visited a new ranch out in the potholes area.  I can't remember the exact name of it or the exact location but i remember it overlooked a decent size lake and was located on the north side of the lake.  I wasn't allowed to take pictures but we were allowed to go in and there were huge mulies on this ranch.  They had food plots and such and we were studying wildlife management.  I wish I could remember the place.  They just started hunting around the year 2000 and their hunts were expensive back then...  Maybe someone knows.

You went to school for wildlife biology....now the real question is if you stuck with and applied that degree?  In other words, where are you working now?  Just curious, it seems like a lot of people that go into wildlife in college end up working somewhere else.

Not very many nontypicals in this fair state.  Not many at all.

Pretty darn limited.  I haven't seen very many in this ole' world, and the two biggest ones managed to escape my lens.  I have a good shed picture I'll get on here.  Most of my non-typicals have been little snappers.

Yeah, I almost ended up representing Bankwalker's friend who was charged with Manslaughter 1st degree on the shooting death of his friend.  It's a really sad case and I hope the best of luck to him.  In the end, I'm a private lawyer and I can do no true service to a guy without resources to adaquetely represent him.

I did get a degree in wildlife management.  I was doing photography at the time through college and started working fort he USFS.  I remember being out in the woods by myself measuring trees and evaluating habitat.  It didn't take me long to realize that I needed to take a different route if I was to truly have an impact on wildlife management.  The plan was to try law school one year and then decide what I wanted to do with my life.  I ended up getting really good grades so I couldn't stop going to law school.  I think the plan was to work for Weyerhauser or the army core of engineers or something.  While I may do that in the future, I think I've found a niche where I'm at and enjoy the hours and flexible time off.  So no, I don't use my degree really at this point Jay.  Maybe in the future.

Oh, I'll try and post a few more non-typicals when I get home later.

Shawn

Sounds like you went to school for the long-haul.  I'm a graduate student studying wildlife ecology here at WSU.  That's why I was curious which direction you ended up going.  I really like it, fun jobs, pay isn't all that great but at least i'll enjoy it.  I'll stick it out for awhile and see how it turns out.

There is also the great hunting around WSU, which is reason enough to stick around.  When I was at WSU/UI, I decided to live in Moscow and then I bought the lifetime hunting license.  Now it costs me nothing to apply for moose/sheep/goat/deer/elk every year as I get a free license in the mail every year.

Oh, we called this buck piggy.  Not quite sure why.  8 points on his right side and 7 on his left.  I think he has an 8th on his left side but I'm not quite sure it's 1"...close.  He was really beat up from the rut.  Lost part of his right ear and looks like he took some body pounding.  I got a rear picture of this buck somewhere on here.

Oh Bone, I think you are right.  I think it's Buckrun.  We helped with some stuff out there.  Big bucks sitting in corn fields...  More pheasants than you would believe...  I think I slept in the guys garage?

ive seen 2 non-typical blacktails. one i was so suprised and a forgot to shoot it.

the other was actually a skull and horns. it was a 2x5 with 2 drop tines on the 5 side. and my uncle wouldnt let me take the smelly thing in his truck. NOT EVEN IN THE BED. so i left it sitting on the stump so i can have my dad pick it up. and right as we went over the hill these 2 guys came rolling up really fast and grabbed it. they must have seen me pick it up and set it down from across the clearcut.

That's one thing I haven't seen alot of for blacktails is a non-typical. Having hunted blacktails all my life I can't remember seeing any real odd balled horn configurations. I did shoot this small 2-point buck mule deer the year before the east side went to 3 point or better. I belive the deer had an old injury as it's left antler grew down around by it's mouth. Was a good meat buck.

Red Dawg,
They are from a guy I know that is in his 70's that was a die hard hunter in the prime of the 60's and 70's. Those are just a few. When I get more time I will post pictures of his entire trophy room. He lost some toes to frost bite and lots of other good stories. He has more 40 inch bucks in his living room than most traveling horn displays. The two big non-typicals were #5 and #8 all time in the state they were killed in and they were taken 5 years apart within a mile of each other. Definitely real though! I've never seen anything like it. I picked his brain through another friend but all his prime areas that he hunted are now closed or a once in a lifetime tag for the most part. Hunting until January 1st with a rifle in the 60's and 70's was to good to keep a job. He would hit Nevada, California, Wyoming, Idaho, and Colorado every year. California believe it or not had some dandies back then. The life size buck has I think 26 scorable points on one side and was the last good buck he has taken and that was in 92'. I'll post more pictures on its own thread when I have more time.

Buckrun has been offering hunts since before 2000 but i do know that eagle lakes has some monster bucks on there place and when my dad and i won a free hunt with them at a ducks unlimited banquet in 2001 our guide told us that they had just started offering mulie hunts could this possibly be the plae pope?

Actually Bone, one of my partners took two shots at that buck, both arrows went right under him by about an inch. I was taking picks hoping to get it on my camera, shooting 3 frames at a time. The second pic is after the second shot, he trotted over the hill and then bolted. Amazing he stood there and let my partner walk to within bow range and take two shots, he didn't want to leave his girls. Serious case of buck fever on my buddies part, he was shaking so bad, it was quite comical :chuckle:

Here is a buck I got several years ago, directly above where you sent 300 to take a look at that big 3 point. It was pre digital and I have lost the prints and negs, they are in a box somewhere probably only to surface when I'm long gone and my kids go through old stuff :chuckle:

Great bucks.    Those of you fortunate enough to see an animal like that in Washington, have it going for you.

There was a 6x9 (not counting eyeguards  :) )running with that buck I sent 300 too this fall.  I bet he is a direct descendant.  I'll dig out a shed from that hillside as well.  Its a dandy.

Would love to see it Bone, I saw one 3 years ago in WC that I thought had to be from the same gene pool, his right G2 was almost identical but it didn't have the extra coming up off the R-G3. I watched him for about 30 minutes through my spotter at about 1/2 mile before it got dark. If I get a chance I will take another pic at a different angle to show the right side.

Well, I think that deer I call "one eye" is a non-typical.  I have pictures of an odd looking 35" wide deer with a wierd rack.  He kind of looks like Slider's photo of the month deer.  The non-typical deer I hoped I could find I could not locate this year.  I think part of the reason was the rut was a bit early this year and I basically missed the deer rut.  They also might have gotten shot during hunting season.  I'm not shure.  I'll check and see what I have...

Here is a picture of that wide deer I ran into.  He was real spooky and wouldn't let me get close.  Not rutting at all.  He looks like a really young deer.  He goes probably about 35" wide but the picture is a bit deceiving at that slight angle.  I have head on shots too.  Anyways, he has a wierd configuration almost like a whitetail or a muley with a kicker and another main tine going up.  An odd deer that I hope survives and I get to see some day in his prime.

Impressive guys. I was with my shed hunting buddy in the spring of 2006 and he found an 8 or 9 pt shed outside of Yakima, probably 2 years old. It looked like a bush. I guess thats why we walked by it so much. I didn't have a camera back then, *censored*. It wasn't huge, just compact with trash. Probably 16-17" tall on the whole, mainframe 4, big front forks, weaker backs, but the trash was all 2-4" long. Cool buck. Wouldn't net for crap, but who cares. I know of a few bucks with a lot of inline cheaters coming out of the same spot in Yakima Co. for the last few years. Really popular spot, not a lot of bucks killed in there anymore. Keep filming those giants guys.
