Title: Help choosing a new ML...
Post by: optimator on June 18, 2010, 07:48:05 PM
Hey all, first post here. I'm avid hunter & fisherman from Southern Oregon. I drew my ML elk tag and am in need of a new gun. Our local Sportsmans Warehouse has 4 guns I've narrowed it down to. Any help from you experienced guys would be great! I'm choosing between a stainless Knight Bighorn, a stainless Knight thumbhole Wolverine, a TC Northwest Explorer, and a Traditions Vortek. HELP! And thanks in advance!

I was interested in this gun, but nobody carries it around here. I'd rather not buy something I haven't seen in person. It does look like a nice rifle tho.

Just an FYI on the CVA elk horn. I bought one back in February. When I got it home, I tryed to put my peep sight on it but the threads on the top of the barrel were screwed up. Also, the front sight was rotated a few degrees on the barrel. It was quite a noticeable difference when compared to the rear sight. And, the threads for the breech plug were a little to tight. I took it out shooting, and it shot just fine, although the rear sight was sticking out almost an 1/8 off of the dovetail to make up for the front sight. When I tried to clean it, the breech plug was frozen solid. I used CVA breech plug greese on the threads when I put it all together so I was pretty ticked off at this point. I called CVA and they told me to send the gun back for inspection. They recieved my gun on March 23rd, and it took them over three weeks just to look at it! I never recieved one call from them. Any info I got came from me calling them. They finally told me that my gun was made wrong, and they would send me a new one, but they wouldn't have them until the beginning of June! I called them around the first of June and was told it would be another 30 to 90 days! Long story short, I think their customer service sucks. I have heard that the elkhorn is a reliable gun, so I understand that I just got one that was screwed up, but what if something is wrong with the new one I get? Or, worse yet, what if I have to send it back for repairs someday? I know alot of guys love their elkhorns so I hope I dont piss anyone off with this post. I just thought it would help to know what you might get into if you buy a CVA. After all is said and done, I'm going to buy a Knight Bighorn. I'm sure it will be worth the extra money.

erk444,
That sucks sorry to hear of those issues. I have read on other sites some simular stuff. The Knight should be a great gun also.

Sorry guys, I was watching the ultimate fighter finale. The gun was brand new from Wholesale Sports. I know that most of their(CVA) guns are fine. I think I just got a bad one. As far as the ram rod goes, they don't have to get that from Spain. Their guns(or barrels at least) are made in Spain and if Spain don't ship guns, CVA don't have guns. I do have to give a shout out to Wholesale Sports though because they said they will give me a refund for my rifle. I've had some iffy experiences with W.S. in the past but I have some new found faith in them now!

yeah i watched the finale to what a war between matt and keith :yike: great night overall. the guys at sportsmans have been pretty easy to deal with before. and yes the barrel and actions from what i know are made over there. and i did deal with them like i said but it was a easy item as well. sucks you has a bad one they are great i have a blackdiamond xr as well and i like the feel of the cva a little better even tough both guns shoot very much alike
