HAHA, NOT! BUT ACCORDING TO THE BACK DOOR I DREW AN ARCHERY OR A MUZZLELOADER BULL TAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS HUNT FOR A LONG TIME.
-
Right on Man, I bet you will do real good.
-
Good for you. Glad a local boy drew that one.
-
Im in Cambell River BC right now and am jumpin on the cabin bed here!!! I sure hope the draw holds true. Caught some nice Salmon this morning came in and hit the hottub then hoped online line and seen the results, I think im going to go geet a Powerball ticket now!!!!! I cant remember what quality deer hunts I put in for so that is exciting as well.
-
Good stuff.
-
Hope you drew Peary
-
Great draw start saving money for the taxidermist.
-
Right on James, congrats! I feel a monter nooksack bull comming your way!!
-
Congrats James, If the drawing holds 50CalJim has one of the Nooksack Muzzy tags. He's going to have it tough, some the the herd grazes in his field in Birdsview.
-
Time will tell, sure makes a guy get excited though, I can only hope!!!
-
That is awesome! I am sooo jealous!
-
congrats. either way i look forward to your stories and pics of this hunt.
-
Congrads!
Not, Im praying the draw doesnt hold because i got nothing!!!
lol
Seriously though... fingers crossed for you!
-
I personally think you have shot enough animals, especially with all of the out of state tags you've drawn. Plus I think you should probably spend more time at work actually working.. Why dont you just do us all a huge favor and not put in for Washington special permits anymore, so people like me and your brother can actually get drawn.. :twocents:
-
Peary turn your tag back into the state so others have a chance to shoot something!!
-
Congrats! Glad to see a local guy finally draw that tag... color me green with envy! Good luck, if you need help packing it out just give me a shout. :hello:
-
NOOKSACK MUZZLELAODER TAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG BULL MANIA!!!!!!!!!!! AND THE SAUK LATE BLACKTAIL RIFLE TAG!!!!!!!!!!! IM IN HEAVEN I SUPPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Fricken awesome man!!!! Congrats again you lucky dog!
-
That will be a sweet hunt. How did you not know if it it was archery or muzzleloader before it became official when you had to have purchased a tag declaring weapon type?
-
You lucky Dog! You know the number if you need any help when the time comes.
-
That will be a sweet hunt. How did you not know if it it was archery or muzzleloader before it became official when you had to have purchased a tag declaring weapon type?
I would say he also has a Elk Multi Season tag!

Duh, didn't even think of that
-
Good thing you drew the ML James. Do you even know how to shoot a bow anymore? :P :hello: Good luck.
-
Your right Matt, I have just about lost the all the little skill I had with my bow. I do got to get to punching some paper though in preperation for our Wyoming and Montana hunts. I do not know how to shoot a muzzleloader though, I will be going to kesselrings tommorrow!
-
oh great!!
-
It was a joke on knowing how to shoot a muzzleloader thing just to let you guys no..... I sold my Knight Bighorn last year as it was not getting used, Ive just got to pick a new one up!!!
-
Congratulations on pulling great tags! I put in for those also, with more points!! :'( Should be a great hunt, lot of nice bulls in there this year, Good luck!!!
-
NOOKSACK MUZZLELAODER TAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG BULL MANIA!!!!!!!!!!! AND THE SAUK LATE BLACKTAIL RIFLE TAG!!!!!!!!!!! IM IN HEAVEN I SUPPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's crazy, you and 50Cal got the only two tags. At least you guys won't be asking for any honey holes. As a side note: 50Cal has already got Dave T signed up to help.
-
Damn! That's like huntin in your own back yard! That's friggin nuts!

Well if *censored* is booked that bull might as well hang it's hide at the taxidermist and jump in the freezer right now. :P :P :P
-
Haha, we better quit talking about him or he will get a big head and never stop talking :yike:. . . . . . .wait, he never stops talking now.
-
The results were just validated today and the smack-talk and bets are already happening. There is a steak dinner and a keg of beer (that all of us locals will get to drink) already on the line between 50Cal and Bearhunter.
-
The after party may be as fun as the hunt itself! Went scouting tonight and videod 2 spikes and a cow, Im going to have to invest in some serious DV tapes this year.
-
I got drawn for the archery spike tag for Nooksack. We'll have to team up and do some scouting together at some point. Congrats on the awesome tags!
-
Sounds good Shane. There are a couple nice drainages that you are familiar with were the big ole bear is at I want to hike into and scout out, as there is always a half dozen bulls in there.
-
You will have to shoot the big one this season.
-
Congrats on your tag, and next time any of you guys talk to damn-it ask him what he would dofor a million dollars!
-

If you bet him that he wouldn't do it, it would take a lot less than a million
-
Why would someone want to be drawn for a spike only tag in the Nooksack unit? I am just curious.
-
Why would someone want to be drawn for a spike only tag in the Nooksack unit? I am just curious.
Why not? You dont lose any of your quality points and your in elk everyday.
-
Like I said, just curious. I grew up following my dad around the unit back in the 80s before the elk were over harvested (not sure who did that?) and it is a fun unit to hunt but I think it would be a tough hunt trying to find those spikes.
-
My cousin drew muzzle anybull in 08 and i went on archery anybull 09 and to say the least filling a spike tag is going to be much harder but if you are a local guy the only other bull hunts are in saint helens so there really isnt too many other options. You are 100% right about finding those spikes though. The ones i saw were with a ton of cows or down in the fields. Its definately not going to be money in the bag.
-
I videod 2 spikes the other night. The Nooksack elk are very callable elk because of the limited hunting pressure, and nothing entices a spike more than when he thinks there is a lone cow broke away from the herd for him to breed, I think its a doable hunt just not a gimme, but there is no gimme hunts even in the Nooksack :twocents:
-
I don't expect the hunt to be an easy hunt at all. But at least I get to hunt elk within an hour of my house and get to hunt the Nooksack herd for once. Also, I don't lose any quality elk points and I can get some good photos/video of the big bulls we bugle in! Hopefully we can at least get some nice, tender elk steaks in the freezer!
-
I wouldnt bugle for the spikes though, they should come fairly easy with a good cow calling sequence. Almost everytime I been up there with other hunters weve had spikes come in!
-
So Im thinking you need to start putting up scouting pictures , I wana see some big ole' Nooksac bulls
-
For sure Charlie most of it will be video though which takes a little time to upload. Should find some good bulls this weekend!
-
Especially wounded ones that survived!
-Steve
-
congrats bearhntr, My boy got a spike muzzy tag , to exactly premo but it will be a super fun hunt, we'll have to hook up. I will keep my eyes open fora pig for ya
c.j.

Thats exactly why i put in for it, close to home and you get to see lots of elk everyday. The only difference is that you got the permit and i didnt. Haha, you will fill your tag.
-
Thanks for making me wait another year on my nooksack muzzy tag. I've been waiting on that a few years now. Was kind of thinking it would be this year lol.
Btw those spike tags should be pretty easy to fill. I say its easier to shoot a spike than have to decide whether or not the bull in your sights is what you really want to pull the trigger on :)
-
Huckleberry, when are we gonna go do some scouting after the snow melts anyways! PM your cell #
-
I"m new to this site, but Excited to Say that I drew the Quality Archery tag. So any help who be Great and any info that I get well be pass on also. My friend drew it 2 year age and is going to help me but the more Info the better. :chuckle: :IBCOOL:
-
I think the spike hunt will be what you make of it. You could drive the roads just above the horse camp for a couple days and fill it without too much issue. I think I would use it to get a key so I could see what's in the rest of the unit .
-
shanevg,
I found you a herd of spikes with the trail-cam.
-
All I see are backstraps on a charcoal BBQ.
:dunno:
-
Perfect!
-
Bump
Just so everyone remembers the bet between Bearhunter and 50CalJim, Saturday at first light is go time and I'm going to win (free beer) no matter who gets the biggest elk.
-
Thanks for bringing this back up. I've been wondering how there scouting has been going. Go get em guys!
-
Two wake ups!
-
Thanks for bringing this back up. I've been wondering how there scouting has been going. Go get em guys!
Scouting has been terrible I've only seen 5 Raghorns. I'll never put in for this POS unit again! :bdid:From now on I'm putting in for Eastside tags.
-
There are no bulls in the Nooksack unit! :)
-
There are no elk in the Nooksack, or the blues. Im just going to quit putting in for elk permits in washington :dunno:
-
They got the last big bull yesterday, the one Ive been scouting now Im gonna have to settle on a Raghorn!!
-
They got the last big bull yesterday, the one Ive been scouting now Im gonna have to settle on a Raghorn!!
That really sucks for you James, sorry man. Too bad you burned your points on a Raghorn permit. You should have put in for the Toutle or Margret .
-
James & Jim,
Good luck guys. Kill some big ones and keep us posted.
-
So excited right now I dont know how Im going to sleep. I just got home from scouting found another huge 7 point tonight and when he dissapeared into the brush, there was an absolute growler of a bull below him bugling, he made the seven point sound like a child, had 10 different bulls from one position tonight bugling in the dark it was insane, I am very excited for tommorrow morning, I marked the spot and will be there 1.5 hours before daylight tommorrow morning!!! Good luck 50Caljim!!!
-
-
I bet those two are having a lot of fun right now. Wish I could have been there. :'(
-
Any more news?
-
Well I didn't see a Bull worth shootin today but we did see 2 Bears we figured would go about 280 & 325 lbs or so. I could have shot the bigger one easily but Bear wasn't on my agenda today. ;)
-
What is must be like to draw a special permit. Glad to see that you made the most of it!!!
-
I spent the evening in the Nooksack Unit with 50Cal, it was very quiet, no tag filled yet. I haven't heard from Bearhunter yet.
-
Passed up and 8x6 last night first time at 104yards and second time at 50 quartering away but could only see mid body up and wasnt quit sure if I was ready to kill one yet or not or him I mean. We fiqure he is probably 315 to 330 but very unique with a moose like palmation up top. He came in again this morning but did not see him as he must have winded me. Weather has been *censored*ty lots of wind and to much rain, it is quiting the bulls up.
-
Well I shot at & missed the biggest Rosie I've ever seen yesterday, I felt like blowing my head off but I'd probably F that up also. :bash: I passed on a nice 6 pt today, I couldn't get a frontal view & just wasn't sure if it had the total package or not. Going back after Mr Big tomorrow after letting him settle down a bit. Been hunting up high & its been raining sideways non stop & I've been coming home drenched. I feel like a Duck! :chuckle: Its interesting that I havn't seen any Indians hunting yet, They must be nocturnal I guess.
-
Sounds like a lot of nice bulls are being seen by folks lucky enough to get a Nooksack Bull. It appears that this permit only unit is working for producing nice animals. Not sure why folks earlier aren't seeing any animals. That area is thick with big bulls.
-

You have a great tag. 10,000 people would love to come home drenched every night. Just figure you are really earning your bull. This is a great thread...
-
I tried to send Bearhunter a text. Looks like I've got his home phone and not his cell number. Two guys practically hunting in their back yard! And they both know the territory! It's only a matter of time before one or both of them posts 'success'.
-Steve
-
Passed on another bull today in the rainstorm, a 240ish 6 point, I took a picture at 15feet ill post it here, my wife really enjoyed the hunt with me this morning! Bulls have been really quite with the last 2 days of rain and heat Im hoping the turn on in the next day or two. Ive got a real heavy seven Im targeting now, he wont score tremendous but he sure will look sweet on the wall!(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi747.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx112%2Fboattrader%2FIMG_8222.jpg&hash=c2332168fffa6ca5c1f8ac0d05e9573ba3acd8d0)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi747.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx112%2Fboattrader%2FIMG_8224.jpg&hash=5c7e06bb4d4c5a04e916b03a7766f79d74dbae32)
-
Dang it! Iv'e got to be out of town this weekend. I'd love to sneak in those woods with ya!
-Steve
-
You guys are living the dream. Hope you get what your lookin for.
-
Go get the big one. You got plenty of time.
-
Definetly a lot less big bulls around than in years past, the only bulls Ive soon that I consider shooters have been on private ground around houses, its a tough year, passed up 4 six points so far in 4 days of hunting so I guess its not to bad!
-
Sounds like you're having a great time James!! :IBCOOL:
-
Not much happened for me today. Got into Elk 1st thing but no shooters so we continued up hill & did some calling & played cat & mouse with The big Bull I'm trying to get but the wind was wrong & the fog was brutal plus the rain was coming down in sheets. Moved lower & called periodically while covering turf with no luck. P.S I thought that there was supposed to be Big Bulls around every corner in the Nooksack? Not! Finished the day off by throwing rocks at Blue Grouse, messin with a porcupine & downing some Beers.
-
Get er done boys, I want to see one of those big boys on the ground!
-
Wap**** thinned the heard a little to much last year. Just joking. Good luck to you guys.
-
You guys got to remember it is still elk hunting, there nothing easy about it. I had to work everyday before I got my out of there. Work hard and it will pay off in the end :chuckle:
-
Well back home for about 15 minutes then back up on the hill. Passed up a small six point and a big ass 4point at 96yards bedded down today, probably 35 head with 3 spikes. No bugles this morning hoping it turns on this evening!
-
Sounds like fun!
Just took a 350 westside bull in today :o
-
I haven't heard from 50Cal today, hopefully we see some success soon. From what I've heard the last couple days, the elk are kicking out of rut mode. :(
-
Sounds like fun!
Just took a 350 westside bull in today :o
I heard the raffle tag holders bull was about that size, I think he was from around your area too.
-
Sounds like fun!

So the raffle guy is out now as well as the auction guy? No modern just muzzy guys now?
-
Just the muzzies hunting and the modern scouting.
-
Thanks.
I should have posed that better.
For modern, I meant the the raffle and auction tags since they were using rifles.

Gotta admit its kinda convenient to be Elk hunting 3 min from the house. :tung: Well just about pulled the trigger this evening but at the last moment I noticed he was a 5x6 with a missing brow. :bash: Had numerous Bulls running around us but its tough to evaluate Main Beams,Girth, count points Etc... & try to decide if its the one for me in the thick stuff. Back at it tomoorrow.
-
Keep going, Jim, you'll get him!
-
Dont you just hate missing brow tines :chuckle: Your having a pretty dang good hunt by the sounds of it, keep haveing fun with it and enjoy the opportunity you have!
The 350 bull I got in was a permit bull, not a raffle bull.
-
Does an extra point make it taste better? Shoot it.
-
One might have just hit the dirt!!!!! :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :chuckle:
-
Sounds like Bearhunter has one down.
-
Possibly!!! He will be on tonight...Probably late!!! Its a DANDY!

-
That's awesome. Can't wait to see the pics and hear the full story.
-
Its official BULL DOWN!!!! Everything I could have ever wished for in a Westside bull!! First off thanks to everyone involved in getting him out hole, 50caljim, John Behon it was a struggle and took many hours! Thanks to my best friend Jeremy and Elk hunting fanatic partner that he is, and one hell of a caller! Thanks to my wife and two little boys for putting up with me being gone for the last 3 weeks of elk season. Many others helped but they may not want there names on the internet, thanks to all. Heres a pic for ya all, Ill post a story later. Finally done at 1:15! Oh ya his name is druppy for the broken ear, he has a wicked curved G2 that adds some character and yes his neck really is the size of a 55gal barrell, you should try loading a bull like that in the back of a truck! Oh ya he was collared so the game department could keep track of him aparently.

Thanks everyone! I think he will top out around 320, not real worried about the score, he has some great Mass and will look awesome on the wall!! The collar was a Sauk/Suattle tribe collar and it says REWARD on it, I called them they wanted me to drive to Darrington to bring it in, I said I dont think so, Im not gonna spend $50 is fuel to return it all the way up there, then they act like they have no idea about a Reward? It was collared in January of 2010, Im kind of pissed as I heard they take one ivory for age, but this bull they took both it has no ivorys in it. They cold have taken a molor not the ivorys, what a crock to take them both. We shall see what the tribal biologist says on Monday when he calls, I will be asking about the ivorys and the Reward.

I have neverheard of a collar that offered a reward? They do take a ivory becaue it is the least intrusive to the animal to take. The molars are set deep in the jawbone whileth ivory teeth aer mainly held in place by soft tissue. If the elk only has one ivory when they catch it, then they will pull the one that is left.
-
Wow, now that's a elk congratulations
-
Just got word from 50CalJim, BIG NOOKSACK BULL DOWN!!! He got it just before dark, no pics yet.
-
ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh boy!!

Congrats 50cal!! Cant wait for the pics!!
-
The million dollar question, collar or no collar?
-
No collar, this was a very remote bull. He was living with the mountain goats.
-
Nice, can't wait to see it.
-
Well just got home shot a very nice 6pt right before dark. Unfortunatly its still on the Mtn but I got my posse rounded up & were taking off at 6am to bring him home. Story & pics later tomorrow
-
Way to go Jimmy!!! He looks huge, call me tomorrow Ill be up to check him out, you definetly deserve the big one after all the effort you have put in!!!!!!
-
Practical, Im just going off what is says on the collar and the first thing it says is REWARD so Im going to followup on it like anybody would. The chances of a ivory missing are pretty slim, I would be willing to bet they took them both?
-
Congrats Jim.
Can't wait to see pics and hear the story.

Wouldn't it be interesting if they spent all summer darting bulls to remove all the ivories. I wonder how many others may be missing as well.

No collar, this was a very remote bull. He was living with the mountain goats.
Goats? There are no Goats there. None. Nada. Zip!

We just got off the mountain after about 6 hours of blood, sweat, and tears. The story of the hunt is not mine to tell, 50Cal will have to do that part. Here are some pics though. The first is a view of the country this bull lived in and the others are of Jim, his caller Dave, and the bull. Keep in mind that 50Cal is not a small man at 6'-5".

Well after 9 days of hard hunting & 1 day of going back up & Quartering,Packing,Butchering & getting the meat in the local Taverns walkin cooler I can finally take my Elk goggles off & relax for a bit. As far as kill story goes my caller *censored* Dave & I spent the morning calling & searching for sign but for some reason the Elk just clammed up & wouldn't respond so we decided to call it a day & go home & take a break since we were both kinda getting burned out a bit. That lasted about 2 hrs so I decided to go up in the high country & go collect my Trail Cam & once I got there I spotted a couple Cows about a Qtr mile away. Eventually I ended up seeing 9 Elk with 1 being a Raghorn. I knew that there was a bigger Bull around somewhere because this is where I shot at & missed a Bull on the 2nd day so I decided to hike to a spot where I had the wind in my favor & found a stump above a Meadow that was a perfect setup. After repeatedly checking the wind, Throwing some Cow Estrues in the air & checked some yardages I threw out a Bugle nothing, 2nd Bugle nothing, which is no surprise since I can't hear anyway. :chuckle:. 3rd Bugle I get a response. The next 4-5 min The Bull & I scream at each other until finally he pops Out of the farside timber line at about 250yds. I can see him coming but couldn't get a good look at him until I see an old dead snag go flying 30' in the air & he pops out at 160 yds & just screams at the top of his lungs & then proceeds to destroy a 15' tree & then breaks it in half & I'm thinking damn I don't think he's happy. :chuckle: I recognize him as the same Bull that I'd missed previously & I thought finally after 5 trips up here I finally found him again. Anyway I decided to clam up & say nothing because the wind was starting to go bad on me & I didn't want him to pinpoint my location. Over the next 3 min he keeped getting closer & closer & was just screaming his head off until finally at 50 yds he stepped out & stared right at me & screamed at me again but that would be his last as I sent 385 gr of lead into his chest & it was obvious he was hit hard as he did a slow 180 & just stood there as I reloaded. For the next shot he was standing straight away from me but he gave me a 5 degree angle so I was able to hit him mid Rib & the bullet ended up in the far shoulder area. He still went about 25 yds before piling up. I Didn't have much daylight left plus no help so I gutted him & went home. I need to thank Wea300Mag for taking a day off work to help with the packing & pics .Also for *censored* Dave for being my Caller. Dave hunted with me for 7 days & missed 4 days of work to help with this hunt. Some of you on here know *censored* Dave & know what I had to put up with :chuckle: but when it came time for getting after it he was all business & I wouldn't have gotten this Bull without his help. P.S this Bull walked right by my Trail Cam at 60' when comming in & died right in line with my Cam but the only problem was is that the Cam was pointed in the other direction. :bash:

Speaking of *censored* Dave, he was happiest when he had 100 lbs on his back.

50Cal, congratulations on a well-earned beautiful trophy bull. Awesome bull and great story! You know I've been following the saga through Wea300mag, finally got a minute to drop you a line. I can only imagine how utterly satisfied you must have felt up there on the mountain that evening when you realized you'd done it.
For the guys that helped out leading up to and following the kill: class act all the way around, gentlemen. That's sportsmenship in the finest sense of the word.
-
the raffle tag winners bull was a 7x8. 53 inch main beem, fairly small eye guards (considering the rest of him), the top 4 points on each side were verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry impressive. 45 inches inside at the widest. Extremely thick all the way up. Killed on Sept 25. He started hunting on Sept1. Shot at 13 paces. Tonight the rib steaks were a little chewy but delicious!
-
And to think that he passed on that Bull earlier. :P
-
that is a beautiful bull. congrats
-
I've been digging around in the Elk forum & I just wanted to tell Bearhunter & 50CalJim congrats on a couple sweet looking Rosies.

You might be right BH45. I've heard that the best Bulls may be on the other side of the Skagit river where no hunting is allowed. The Nook is not a gimme hunt anymore I hear. ;)
-
I'm glad to hear this, I was thinking about putting in for it.
I'd hate to waste my points on a worthless hunt.
-
