Title: Late Tag help; Gardner OFFICIAL
Post by: haugenna on June 20, 2010, 09:54:54 PM
My hunting partner drew a late tag for the Gardner unit.  He had 12 points.  He is not big into the internet so I am trying to help him out.  He has spent some time hiking that units over the years but neither of us have ever been in the area during hunting season or while the migration was going on.  Looking for some past tag holders or people that have been over in the area for some tips on places to start.  We are going to be doing a lot of hiking this summer to learn the lay of the land and trails.  Not asking for your secret spots just a little guidance.  Any info is appreciated.  Thanks.

Don't get the cart before the horse here.  Why don't you wait until the results are official before getting too wound up.  That being said, I know nothing of those units but I'm sure you'll find plenty of guys that do if your friend ends up with the tag.  :twocents:

In my opinion, weather conditions affect the Gardiner tag more than any of the other units in the Methow.  This should be primarily a migration hunt.  Getting a lay of the land is good plan.  Finding areas that you think will hold deer during November will be the key.  The unit is filled with options and public land.  Good luck to your buddy.

Maybe we'll run into each other - we drew 3 of the tags this year :rockin:

Still not quite sure how we pulled it off since none of us had many points, this will be my first Washington draw, but I'm definitely chompin' at the bit.

Typically hunt in OR on our family's cattle ranch, but it's getting too expensive, among some personal opinions that have made me want to push out on my own. This will be the first year I won't have hunted down there in about 10 years. It was getting frustrating, great elk hunting, but MD were getting far and few between.

Good hunting!

Kopper,

Did you draw rifle?

If you did we have half of the tags on this site and hunfishnw.  My buddy, huntinphool's brother, and you three guys.  They only issue 10.

Modern it is..

My first experience hunting deer in WA (and public land) was up there for general about 6 years ago. I said I'd never do it again. I've seen less orange on a pumpkin. But I knew that it was a good late option.

I had 3 pts when I drew, I'm fairly certain my buddy (group leader) had 4, and I have no idea what his dad had b/c I wasn't even aware that he was in the group. Last minute addition.. something you'd think you should tell your partner...

Might not hurt to compare notes when it's gets a little closer. What dates are folks looking to hunt? I just took a new job so I'm a little short on leave, looking to get as far into that last week as possible. Looking at the 11th - 16th right now, plus the first weekend and that last Saturday.

Twisp river road to little bridge cr. on right.  There is plenty of area to hunt up here.  All the rds. to the right.  Cow cr. sheep cr. etc.  I have spent many days hunting this area but it has been awhile.  When the deer numbers started to decline I quit going on this hunt.  Never hunted the late season, just the general.  Dont remember the rd # but the first right after turning onto little bridge cr. will take you way up and anything to the right of it is great hunting.  I know this is vague, but you will see deer, and at that time of the year you should see plenty of bucks.  Good luck.

^^^^

The first right on Bridge Creek takes you up on Thompson Ridge and will spit you out over by Patterson Lake.

If you head up Lime Creek there are also some good opportunities.  You can actually make the hike from Lime Creek to Little Bridge Creek pretty Easily and stay on forest service land.  We've got property in between the two and I've been all over those hills since I was a little tike.

Good luck on the hunt.

There is a lot of areas to hunt there Elbow coulee to frost rd.  It is pretty open country and always has deer.  4 of the bucks taken last year on that late hunt came off the frost road.  It seems where everyone was hunting.   There is better areas with less pressure the further up twisp river you go.
