Title: Introduction
Post by: 2bigfish on June 27, 2010, 05:09:48 AM
Hello all,
Rather posting an introduction on the general hunting forum I posted on the Elk forum because its the only animal I have a desire to hunt. I have shot deer but its just not my passion. To me, there is nothing like a bull Elk. By far the most majestic creature in North America.
I am mostly a sport fisherman. Did some time guiding in Alaska and fish frequently here in the Northwest. Salmon, Trout, Steelhead, and all the standard saltwater species. I run a 2352 Trophy, 16x54 Willie driftboat and a Maravia raft.
My passion for Elk began  in the early 90's Archery Elk hunting the Washington coast for Rosies. The days when you could see what you were hunting. Riding the ridge lines and scoping the clearcuts.    After a few years of frustration I gave up on my pursuit for Elk. I never took a shot over 3 years. I had opportunities at 50 yards plus or minus a few.
Well, last year the fire was lit again. I put in for Montana's big game combo and was successful. Off to the Madison valley. I was into many Elk everyday. On the 6th day of Archery season, I had my opportunity. A 6x6 broadside at 35 yards. Clean miss. How? I had practiced to 80 yards daily. Unbelievable how one can go from being on top of the world to hell in seconds. To this day I think about the scenario and what I did wrong. The conclusion= I did not pick a spot. I was so overwhelmed by the situation. I ended up with a few more opportunities but ate tag soup. I ended up going deer hunting in the Lewistown region of Montana with a rifle. Saw lots of decent deer but the desire was not there so I passed on deer and once again came home empty handed. You see, I enjoy the pursuit but am truly not a fan of the meat. I have tried many versions of venison but just not for me.
Enough of my ramblings. I would like to say thank you to those who provide this site and the great info available here.
Thank you.

Welcome back!  Sounds like you had some great experiences last year in Montana.  Are you hunting in Washington this year?

Do you ever run the drift boat down the Klickitat?  It's a great river. I bought a boat last year and I am trying to learn how. I suggest you try it if you haven't fished it. It's full of steelhead now. Welcome to the site.

Elk hunting with a bow is an addiction

I know how you feel. Missed 2 huge wt deer over the years at less than 20 yds from a treestand bow hunting. Shoot out to 70 yds in practice. It happens

Welcome to the site

2bigfish, welcome. Yes the close miss. You will think about it for the rest of your life! Get back out there after Roosie's. After you get one you will be hopelessly hooked forever, I know I am. Give me a ring if you ever need a fishin' partner!

Welcome to the site!

Just about everyone that's hunted for any length of time knows what a miss feels like...You'll get another chance.

I was beginning to wonder if I  was welcomed. 79 plus views and no responses.  So thanks to those who responded. Please hang with me. I am still figuring this Computer thing out. I know there is a way to add quotes to this reply. I will figure it out.
dreamnbig-I will be hunting Washington this year. In fact, I drew the Mudflow quality archery elk special permit.
Deerslayer- I have not been down the Klickatat. I have been meaning to head down that way. I have a friend that guides down there. Some day. I try to spend the majority of my time on the peninsula.
1morebuck-I fish the Nooch on occasion. I let you know if I ever have an open seat.
Thanks again.
