Title: Rust blueing?
Post by: klickitat on July 03, 2010, 10:09:53 AM
Has anyone had good results with a rust bluing kit that I can do at home? I have a gun that I would like to spruce up a little and really like the rust bluing look.

I built a muzzleloader kit a few years ago and used Laural Mtn. Forge browning solution for rust blueing.  You scald the parts in boiling distilled water between rusting cycles to change the rust color to black.  It was really easy and I'm happy with the results.  I'll definately be doing it again on another rifle.

Oxphoblue from Brownells works wonders with streelwool.
Wear glove and ventilate.

I like the Caseys (I think) plum brown, you use a propane torch to heat the parts and the rub it on and let it sizzle.  Looks great on a muzzleloader and provides a good protective coat.  Several coats gets it nice and dark.
