this post is a bit long so please bear with me.....took the oly arms AR out shooting yesterday. put 5 Rem factory cartridges in mag and pulled charging handle back and let go..bolt would not go in all the way in as if the cartridge was too big to chamber. after pulling handle back, the cartridge would then fall into the chamber and the bolt would then close..once the bolt is closed i could shoot but on the next round the bolt would not close all the way in.. tried 2 different magazines.(mag pul) but did the same thing. there are marks on the cartridge as if it is too big to chamber but hand feeding it in with the bolt open the cartridge would go all the way into the chamber no problem. it seems it (the bolt) gets hung up about one inch shy of fully closing. cycles perfect with no round in mag..upon closer observation it appears the bolt is a little cocked because when you pull it back just a bit you can see it straighten a bit. then it will fully close on a round. this gun has never been shot until yesterday and has not been disassembled. i live in graham if there is anybody close that can take a look at it. any advice would be appreciated...i know.. get a rock river....

It sounds like maybe you have an out of spec lower that holds the magazine too high or an incorrect action spring but if you haven't disassembled it yet it could just be that it needs to be cleaned and lubed properly. I would try cleaning and lubing it and see if that doesn't get it working. Make sure the bolt and carrier are well lubed and try it again. Do NOT lube the chamber.

Did your AR come with a cproducts mag? it sounds like it has to do with the mag jamming the bolt. You could call oly arms and they will help you out. There a great bunch of guys there and there guns are too, every manufacture has problems. :twocents:

Break it down, clean it and lube the crap out of it with good oil. I use Mobile 1 synthetic but any good oil will do. It has to break in and most of the rack grade AR's need to be throughly oiled to function properly. Don't be afraid to completely disassemble everything including the bolt group. I don't mean lightly lube it, I mean drop in several drops of breakfree or whatever oil in the bolt group and go shoot it again.

Sounds like the Mags are holding on too tight, or sitting up too high. Had a similar problem with Browning factory mags. They had been stored so long (canceled contract with the South African Army) the oil turned glueish...cleaned the &$^#$% outta them inside and out, solvent and scotchbrite. Any marks on the fired Brass?

it might be bad ammo, the bullet could also be to long and that is what is stoping it before fully chambered. :twocents:

had the same problem with my ar with reloads the rounds wouldnt feed after i reloaded them. found out my overall length was too long. never know could have got a bad box of ammo.

I'll second what FALFire recommended. Lube the heck out of that thing. Here is a great thread from over on m4carbine.net on cleaning and lubrication for your AR. Bathe that thing in lube and cycle it for a while then try and go out and fire it.

thanks for all the tips. i tried 2 different mags with factory remington rounds. same thing..trying to lube now but i got pieces everywhere and am trying to get it put back together... i will keep you posted...... thanks again

If you never lubed your rifle to begin with I'm not surprised it didn't function. It sounds like you are in need of a little practice at field stripping it and maybe a little instruction, if you are near Mukilteo I would be willing to give you a hand with it.

Why not make the trip to Olympic Arms in Nisqually, WA? Its just north of Olympia and they guys there might be able to give you a good rundown on taking care of your rifle. Plus, I believe they have a lifetime warranty and will inspect the rifle to make sure its in spec. They can test fire in the back to make sure. Good luck.
