Title: ASHFORD ELK?
Post by: BIGINNER on July 07, 2010, 12:25:05 PM
I WAS WONDERING,.. IS IT A ZOO IN THE ASFORDA REA DURUNG ELK MODERN FIREARM SEASON?  I WAS THERE LAST YEAR IN JANUARY (HONEYMOON) AND THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE A NICE PLACE TO GO ELK HUNTING,   WHAT ABOUT BEAR SEASON?  WHAT'S IT LIKE DURING BEAR SEASON?   THANKS FOR ANY HELP.   I'LL BE CHECKING OUT THE AREA AGAIN IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS, SO I'M NOT ASKING FOR ANY PATICULAR SPOT,  I KNOW SEVERAL SPOTS OUT THERE,  JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF CROWDS TO EXPECT AROUND THERE. (IN THE NATIONAL FOREST, SOUTH-EAST OF ASHFORD) WHATS THE ELK POPULATION LIKE THERE? BEAR POPULATION?

Most of the roads are gated during the hunt, the north side of the hwy is the ORV area. Lots of motorcycles and quads running around. You go in far enough you can find elk. The south side, last time I was down there the bridge was out so crossing the river was not possible and the south district was completely gated. There are elk in there, you just have to find a way in past the gates that no one else is using.
People do get elk there though

SKATE CREAK RAOD IS WHAT I WAS LOOK ING AT,  I'M PROBABLY GONNA GO CAMPING THERE IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS,  (MAYBE DURING RASBO'S BBQ).
I SAW THAT THE RAOD IS CLOSED THERE DURING THE WINTER,  BUT THAT WON'T STOP ME   :chuckle:

Plenty of elk, but very thick and brushy. has not been ant real logging in years.

Skate Creek Rd closes when the snow gets to bad and they don't plow it, so it will more then likely be open through hunting season. I take it when heading over for late season in Rimrock.

Very much a tree huggers area, with all the freak'n tour'ads and their crosscountry ski's. Whitaker's Bunkhouse doesn't help us out. The elk herd numbers are down. There are some elk, don't get me wrong. But the quality and numbers are way down from where they were 10-15 years ago. Loggers tend to lock up the gates they have their equipment in (don't blame them). And they tear up roads on the way out, so access is not good. LT Murray land is all walk-in and the Hancock area is all permit purchase for access. Needs some better management in my opinion, but what else is new...

YA.  I'LL CHECK OUT THE AREA ONE OF THESE DAYS,  I'M JUST TRYING TO FIND A GOOD ELK SPOT WHERE I CAN TAKE THE WIFE AND KID CAMPING,  I'LL KEEP LOOKING,   I'M LOOKING ALL OVER THE STATE,  BUT CLOSER TO TRI-CITIES IS ALWAYS BETTER.

Watch out for tweekers. theres a good little spot for elk just past the bridge on the way to the ski park. Not positive what the road name is but its on the right between Elbe and Ashford look for the ski park sigh,Not.....Private Property like some will tell you you just need to cross the little river.Thats where we were going but we drew Margaret. :) :) Good Luck (never saw a bear) but one heck of a nice kitty last year But serious dont leave anything of value in your car... :bdid:Lots of crack heads...Thats why they call it ASHford, >:( >:( We took 2 elk out of there last year.
