Title: sighting in ammo?
Post by: 400out on July 09, 2010, 02:53:34 PM: I was just wondering if you guys had a opinion on sighting in a shooting with ballistic tips ( a lot cheaper ) and hunting with accubonds do you think this wuold work ok or not?

There's still a cheaper way to practice with your hunting rifle. Cabellas and others sell Remington CoreLokts in bulk bag for near half the price as Balistic tip Noslers. My local shop even sells Nosler seconds, both of which are still fine bullets, for about the same price.

Lots of deer and elk taken long before Accubonds came out.

Post by: Caretaker on July 10, 2010, 12:11:56 AM: Once I find a load that works I shoot that all year at various distances and conditions. I never liked shooting different loads for practice, knowing your weapon and load over time gives you added confidence to make that long shot when needed.

Post by: brew on July 10, 2010, 12:36:30 AM: i've shot a lot of enexpensive bullets with my 7mm mag and sure they would get the job done....but just something of knowing when i shoot the 160 gr nosler partitions, which are my current choice, that when i pull the trigger the confidence in accuracy and performance is there that I know when boom goes the dynamite that you'd better be coming with the knife and packboard...i've killed everything from bears at 20 yds to deer at 450 yds and they've all acted as if the rug was pulled out from underneath them. i'm not saying that there may be a better load/ or bullets out there but the confidence that comes from using this particular load for me in my rifle is 2nd to none.

In my experience, shooting both of these bullets from the same cartridge, rifle and load almost always results in different results in groups and point of impact. The only two bullets I've ever used that are similar in POI and group size are the Sierra ProHunter and the Nosler Partition. I use 60gr of H4831 with a 130gr ProHunter or Partition and they shoot exactly to the same POI and have the same size groups.

If both shoot to the same spot, use the cheaper bullet. I did the same thing with Sierras out of my 270 until I realized Sierras kill just as well as Noslers on deer-size game. Been using Sierra ProHunters and GameKings for medium game ever since.
