Post by: klickriverchromer on July 09, 2010, 07:31:56 PM: Just picked up a nice new camera. Never had a SLR camera, but I think it's going to be a good one! Now I have to get my adaptor to my field glass and I will be in business @ longrange photos.. It came w/a AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR that's a mouth full! Any other lens suggestions, reasonably priced zoom lens? Place's to pic up quality used lenses (trustworthy)?

I first rented a Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR which was a fun lens, but not an especially fast lens. Fairly inexpensive as far as telephoto goes too, around $500. For an antelope hunt Im going on next month I plan on renting a 70-200 2.8 vrII or a 80-400 5.6. The 5.6 lens is cheaper to rent, $75/week insured. The faster 70-200 is $110/week insured. The only downfall I see with the 80-400 is I have a d40 and the auto focus won't work with it, not really a big deal. Also the 80-400 reaches out a lot further. Both those lens are close the the 2k mark for cost. Hope that helps!

Search for Nikon lenses, its most likely that Nikons website has them listed nicely. I found a site for Canons.... here's the bottom line, as the price goes up, quality goes up. To get these ultra professional looking results that you see from Bone, Pope and others... you will be looking at $800-$6000 lenses... Especially if you are looking for a big zoom. You can get a pretty decent around the house lens for like $600 I"d bet! But whats crazy is...you can get that same lens, faster, for say, $1800...its all about the speed....

Good Luck. I think if you do some rentals like suggested above you could get some good ideas...but then again...that is expensive too!

My wife and I are buying a Canon DSLR soon and will be using the Kit lens for quite a while... however, I could see renting a real nice lens and using it for a week to take family portraits and such... or to go to Yellowstone or something like that....

I recently was looking for something on Ebay and figured I'd just do a quick nikon search.... :yike: Nikon 55-300mm lenses around $150!!! So on inpulse I clicked buy now and and was extreamly happy with it!! It was brand new in the plastic srink wrap. Mounted it on my camera and it did everything a high quality lense is post to do.

Now what you have your "basic" 55mm lense, i'd sugest you find a 35-200mm lense AND a 70-300mm. That should cover most of what you will photograph, if you want to do a nice close up shot a mirco lense would be nice as well (15 or 20mm lense), but what I do is stand back and zoom in :chuckle: it works! I also have a 600mm lense which is $$$$$$ and I hardly use it. Unless I have an excellent set up and photographing things that our a ways off.
