Does anyone have any advice on hunting for elk in the Cheney unit. I see there a high modern firearm success rate there (23.4%) with 51 elk killed in '06. Any advice on where to go to look for the elk? I don't know the unit well (or any of the units on east side for that matter.) Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Find access to private lands that hold the elk. That is probably the toughest part of that hunt.

Is there no good public land to hunt, or is the public land just too crowded to find the elk on? Are there any other good public land units in the Spokane area that are worth hunting? Thanks!

All the elk are on private farm land and the reserve. Contact the Bio, Agents, manager to get names and locations. The biggest bulls best hunting is almost impossible to get permission from the farmer. I would start immediatly getting permission. I was at EWU in the 80's and there were some elk, and a couple huge bulls that spent 90% of their time on the reserve. The herd has just continued to grow.

I would suggest buying about 1500 acres near williams lake. the lease hunters and dirt bags have all but killed public access to private land here.

Where are the buffalo, is that Turnbull, or is that another private place. I know somewhere in there along the river or something there is a big ranch that has bison....anyone know?

buffalo aren't on turnbull, just south of it by williams lake I believe.

Bone, the buffaloe on just past the Williams lake cut off. They are on ground run by the Belsby's. I know they have hunting opp's but its like- ok heres a bull out in this pasture Ill drive you up about a 100yds from him get out real slow and use the hood for a rest, nice shot- not exactly a fair hunt, they also do the same for "wild boar". Some of the ranchers around them arent very receptive to the way they hunt, and when something gets over the fence its fair game. I do know where a bunch of pigs went native and now are magpie bait. Guess some people will pay to do this ,but I damn sure wont, IMO its not even a hunt your just shooting at breathing targets.

Yeah, not my style of hunting either. I am hoping Wyoming puts me at the top of the list. I have been as close as top 70. I was just wondering where they were. I've seen some of there pics and they have some pretty decent bulls along with the buffaloe in some of their pictures. Some more high fenced hunts I guess. I can't imagine trying to build a fence to hold a buffaloe.

Hey Bone we used to have a buffalo ranch right here on Gibson Rd. that was in the 40s and 50s.
also had one about 20yrs ago out on Spyres rd. out of selah.

Dang, that would have been cool. They look so normal in pictures and on TV, but if you see one up close, they are the original Sherman tank. Even the cows.

most refuges i know of allow hunting but usually only with shotguns, so couldnt a guy hunt them with a 12 gauge and slugs?

little pend oreille nwr is a refuge and you can hunt there with rifles, bows, shotguns, deer, turkey, elk, moose, ducks, coyotes, whatever you want.

hmm i have hunted the columbia national wildlife rfuge for years with a shotgun for deer and waterfowl and upland birds, and if there were any elk out there i wouldve hunted them too, maybe turnbull is different though

Some national wildlife refuges allow hunting, other's don't. Turnbull is one that doesn't. I know the WDFW has been working at getting them to change that policy but I doubt they will have any luck.

Like Bobcat said, they are working on it but I think its highly doubtful they can convince the refuge to go with it. The farmers around the refuge see them as extra money, but when the hunting starts the elk hit the refuge. There is a small bit of state land that can be hunted, but Ive only seen elk in there 2 times so its pretty hit and miss. BTW that whole Cheney area has some HUGE bulls. All due to lack of hunting acess.

Head North around the Huckleberry Unit. Small pockets of Elk can be found if your willing to look around. Lots of private land but there are some good public areas also. Much less Elk hunter pressure. If your serious about hunting anywhere around the Spokane area you should make a big batch of Peanut Brittle and start knocking on doors and making friends.

I live in the huckleberry unit, trust me there are no elk in the huckleberry unit. ;)
