I'm going to be at westport 7-14- 7-16 camping at twin harbors with the family. Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how and where to catch surf perch? And does anyone know can you use crab pots off the dock this time of year? I know there is a time you can only use rings just don't remember when it is. Thanks for the help.

the perch are pretty easy to catch, the trouble is finding them. i usually just use a heavy steelhead rod and rig up a drift fishing setup with a #4 hook and enough lead to get out there(usually 1-2oz). go out at low tide and find bars and troughs in the sand and come back at high tide to fish them. sand shrimp and clam necks work really well for them.
the jetty's been kicking out some really nice lingcod lately too.

the guys getting the BIG lings(15-20lb range) have been using live greenling and sea bass for bait. talked to a guy who said the greenlings were biting on sand shrimp. white curly tail jigs in the 1-2oz size will get them too, just remember to bring a lot of gear because it's snaggy down there! this is all on the south jetty(the big one at westhaven state park).
i'd bring something cheap and heavy duty, spooled up with at least 20lb test. i saw a guy hook into something big(my guess would be either a monster ling or a halibut) and had the thing on for close to an hour. i got bored and moved spots before he landed it(or busted it off).

They are going to put out the poison carberol or severene on the 13-14-15-19 and 25th. I called the numbers on the warning signs on the boat ramp and they are also doing the willipa. If the fishing is;nt to good you will know why.
