I shot my first buck with a 303 savage lol, that was 15yrs ago, but my dad always made me work my way up for things growin up, I laugh at it now cuz of what I now shoot(270) and my friends laugh when they see it lol anybody else ever packed a gun that needed a travel cart? Haha

I hunted a few times with my grandpas old Remington .300 savage. I forget the model number but it was one of those old recoil automatics that had a barrel inside another barrel. The inner one slid back into the outer one when the action cycled. That was a heavy SOB.

That Remington was probably a model 81 http://mauser98.com/rem8-3.jpg (http://mauser98.com/rem8-3.jpg)
I still carry a WWII 30-06 once in a while. Its an M1903-A3. With scope it weighs in at 9 1/2 pounds and still has most of the military stock that's been cut/sporterized.

I'll be chasing mulies this fall with one Identical to what you described (30-06).

Steve,
That's it. A model 81. I still have the darned thing. It wasn't working so well the last time I used it so it's a gunsafe queen now.

I have an old 300 Savage that I received after my gramps passed away :'( cant find ammo for it to save my life, but a nice gun, with a steel but plate.

I have an old 300 savage. It was my first gun. My momma gave it to me when I was 14 ( I am much, much older now) and I don't have any problem finding ammo for it. :dunno:

Skagit Arms and Kesslering's both have 300 Savage ammo.

Thanks, never been to those shops.

killed my first buck with a mauser 98 in 8mm . first shot good 2-whatever who knows where it's gonna hit. I've always wanted to rechamber it , but why bother ?.
-
Ya I just remember that 303 savage being heavier than the dickens, we still have it but don't use it, and we didn't have a sling for it, so I got a good workout in for a couple years lol
-
Coach,
I too killed my first deer with a Model 98 in 8mm Mauser. That's a nice rifle. Still got that one too.

i though it would be fun to pack the 'ol M1 Garand in the deer woods, um......oops, guys that carried those into battle were real men, holy smokes, at the end of a day i wanted to mount casters to the but plate
-
lol i laugh everytime i hear anything about a garand i love those old rifles BUT!!!!!!!! the first time i loaded one of them i got the good old garand thumb jobs and sob did that hurt like hell i wonder how many of those have happened over the years :chuckle: i am sure a lot. you do learn quick to get the hell out of the way when that last shell kicks out of the stripper clip :chuckle: fun old gun. i would have no prob with that gun and the 30 on a deer but would keep it to under about 150y myself
